The business world today is described, in addition to everything else, by an increasing competitiveness, globalization, consistent technological advances and organizational changes. Therefore the success of an organization lies heavily on how they implement sustainable competitive advantage. Determinants of sustainable competitive advantages have traditionally relied on a single framework (SWOT) and then focus to the environmental (external factors) of organizational performance (Porter, 1980; 1985).

This prompts the importance of knowledge management and it’s successfully applcation in commercial organizations. Maintaining competitive advantage also requires organizations to consequently develop its human element to the fullest and skillfully manage knowledge. Differentiation in workforce knowledge, skills, motivation and engagement is the utmost important for organizations to become competitive. Strategic positioning of training and development directly promotes business goals and objectives.
Challenges in Learning and Development
While the importance of training as a crucial tool to develop human capital and organizational knowledge is indisputable; investment in training activities is generally low. Inability to measure and prove the impact of training on organizational performance is the key factor (Sánchez, 2003).

Each year, more and more students are coming to college to study. Colleges require some student to take developmental courses before students take their major class because colleges think these students may do not have enough basic knowledge to handle the major class. In Montgomery College, most students have to take developmental courses in the first semester. After that, these students are allowed to take their majors. However, not every student who took the developmental courses gets success in their majors.
Their employees are given the opportunity to work in a nurturing and thriving environment. The leaders of CarMax have put their words into actions for their employees to benefit from. Their efforts have earned respect from the employees as seen in feedback from employees on their website. The employee development and training initiatives are one of the biggest impacts they can have on their employees. “Training and development play a vital role in the effectiveness of an organization” (Falola, Osibanjo, & Ojo 2014).
All department managers are required to attend bi-weekly training sessions so that they are equipped to then train the staff in their department on new policies, quality control, and work requirements. The new training models have been designed to increase knowledge as well as job satisfaction. We want our current employees as well as all new hires to stay with our company and receive on the job training to enhance their skill as well as add skilled workers to our workforce. Our Sales and Marketing Department will be working hand and hand with our Human Resources Department. It introduced iPods in 2001 for music players, in 2007, it started producing iPhones. Its products are consumer oriented and this has contributed to the success of the company. Apple also views innovation as basis of survival and business development (Yoffie, 2012).

Which firms demonstrate a clear competitive advantage because of (a) major value-creating skills/core capabilities and/or (b) superior assets or resources? Which firms have demonstrated sustainable sources of competitive advantage? The two core competencies that drive a firm’s competitive advantage are cost leadership and differentiation.
Competitive advantage is when two or more firms compete within the same markets, one firm possess a competitive advantage over its rival when it earns (or has potential to earn) a persistently higher rate of profit. There are three types of competitive advantage. a) Cost leadership strategy occurs when a firm a delivers the same services as its rivals but at a lower price. b) The differentiation strategy occurs when a firm delivers greater services for the same price of its rivals. c) Focus strategy is a focused approach requires the firm to concentrate along one specific segment either a cost leadership or a specialization strategy.

The value chain equates to the internal activities that a company employs in transforming its inputs to outputs; this helps with the improvement of activities, helping the company to achieve competitive advantage. In the analysis of H&M’s organizational capabilities the value chain analysis would show that with viewing the internal activities; this analysis would show where the company’s competitive advantages as well as disadvantages lies. This analysis would then depict the company’s core competencies. When a company is said to be competing through its cost advantage; it would most likely try to carry out its internal activities at a much lower cost than its competition would want to.
The four building blocks of competitive advantage can be used to help a company become more profitable and stay ahead of their competition. The four factors are superior efficiency, quality, innovation, customer responsiveness. All four building blocks are important to any company. However, I believe that customer responsiveness is the most important because having loyal and happy customers can make or break any company. The four building blocks can help companies grow and become the leader in their industry over their rivals.
Sustainable development is a model that aims to link the idea of what is to be sustained, with what is to be developed, and focuses on three pillars, economics, social and environmental (Kates, Parris, and Leiserowitz, 2005; pp. 3). As a holistic approach it seeks to develop the three pillars, on a local, regional and global level. This paper will analyse the concept of sustainable development and the strengths and weaknesses of this approach will be discussed. Firstly, a background of this model will be presented, which will explore the three pillars. Secondly, the strengths and weaknesses will be evaluated, and lastly, a brief contrast will be provided of the opinions of sustainable development between the Global North and Global South.
Kahn’s (1995) approach to the sustainable development theory is consistent with the modern day development techniques of Europe 2020 priorities; smart growth, sustainable growth and inclusive growth. The adoption of some innovative strategies such as the utilisation of renewable energy as an integral part of the energy mix could result in growth of the economy, which will eventually trickle down to the poor or extend to the rural or disadvantaged areas of the country. The social sustainability generally explains the idea of equity among the people, empowerment, participation, accessibility and institutional stability. It seeks to ensure a good standard of living in the country by alleviating poverty. Environmental sustainability seeks to explain the ways in which exploitation and utilisation of the natural resources will not be made to negatively affect the environment or the health of human beings (Kahn 1995).
