COMPARING WESTERN AND AFRICAN DEMOCRACY:
That Africa as a whole is becoming more democratic, stable and prosperous as a result of frequent elections which are held in many of the countries in the continent. (The Econonomist, 2010). The magazine further suggests that, dictators will find it hard to take away the right to vote from citizen’s altogether, and thus, this has helped to embed democracy.
However, the Western Democracy cannot be implemented successfully in Africa. This is due to many things. These include:
Western Democracy has principles of free and fair elections with no rigging. Unfortunately, many countries in Africa, even those that are considered democratic in relation to elections and voting are plagued by election rigging. An example of this is President Mugabe of Zimbabwe, who starved voters in an attempt to make them vote for him. (Rotberg, n.d.). In addition, western democracy fully believes in allowing citizens and people to voice their opinion and usually, there is freedom of thought, speech and so on. African democracy has limitations in the sense that, many countries have put restrictions on these basic civil rights. Furthermore, Western Democracy employs peaceful and fair elections which are not the case in Africa, where there is a lot of violence, coups and pre-election and post-election violence like the case in Kenya. Moreover, Western Democracy has greater political participation, especially because citizens make an effort to educate themselves
