CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND RELATED STUDIES
Adversity Quotient Adversity Quotient is an established science, theory and approach for becoming measurably more resilient (Stoltz, 2016). It is a measure of one’s resilience and ability to persevere in the face of constant change, stress and difficulty or it is simply a measure of how individual respond to every day adversary (Amparo, 2014). It is the ability of the person to adapt to distress, challenge, setbacks, suffering, troubles, difficulties and misfortune. The more resilient you are, the more effectively and constructively you respond to life difficulties and the more fulfilling life becomes. It will also determine how well an individual will stand strong and true when

Adversity being stressed to people, everyone has its own pace of facing it. He/ She may not consider that each decision he/she makes has an equal or corresponding situation. It requires a certain resilience to overcome adverse situation. It entails staying stable and being healthy in the levels of physical and psychological functions, even in the face of challenge. People who successfully apply Adversity Quotient perform optimally in the face of adversities. In fact they do not only learn from this challenge, but they respond to situation better and faster (Amparo 2014). This is because Advesity Quotient come’s our natural ability to learn, adopt and change that enhances our vital ability. A person with high AQ enhances their accountability to control, empower and motivate actions while low AQ people disown the problem causing failure to act, give up, point finger, reduce performance and anger directed towards others and many more negative actions ( Canivel, 2010). People with high AQ holds themselves accountable for situation regardless of the cause, while those with lower AQ lapse into victimization of helplessness (Cura & Gozum 2011). Recent research have proved that Adversity Quotient can be increased dramatically, permanently revived and strengthened, People with high AQ translate capacity, productivity …show more content…
Paul Stoltz in 1997. It is a scientific theory of human resilience. According to Stoltz, AQ determines the ability of a person to succeed in work and in life. It tells how a person withstands adversity and his ability to surmount it. It predicts how well overcome adversity and who will crush it predicts who will give up and who prevails. Adversity Quotient strengthens the effectiveness of leadership and enhancing the effectiveness of subordinates. Adverse situation can be divided into these categories; events you have no control or influence over, situations resulting from decision you made and circumstances crushed by someone else action (Stoltz, 2010). He identified 3 levels of adversity`; social, workplace and
For thousands of years, people have adapted to their environment to better suit themselves and to evolve. Adapting is making (something) suitable for a new use or purpose and evolving is to develop gradually. Individuals adapt to the challenges of life to find outcomes that are either positive or negative. It helps them to become resiliant and to adapt to their environment and also strengthen the bonds of friendship. The bigger the adversity, the more adapting will need to take place.
Life can be difficult, and people every day have to endure their own type of adversity, but adversity isn’t limited to just one problem but an array of difficulties. These problems can appear from many factors may it be a physical, mental, or social situation. The problems of adversity can be seen in the book The Other Wes Moore, as throughout the book, both of the Moore’s have faced different problems, with one overcoming, and the other being stuck with obstacles. When anyone is in the face of adversity, being guided to overcome will lead to success, while the less guided will lead to more stresses. Any type of adversity can emerge at any time, but the best way to overcome it is to find guidance.
As the Roman poet Horace once said, "adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant." In other words, he believed that challenges are beneficial because they bring out talents that would have stayed hidden otherwise. He thought that adversity would force a person to use their unknown talents out of desperation. Some argue that his theory is irrelevant and that a person 's skills will develop just as well without adversity if they have the capacity, but I believe that hardships will evoke and improve on their dormant talents.
In life, adversity can be a positive or negative, but by definition, adversity means hardship or struggle. Everyone has faced adversity at one point or another, good or bad. Through American history and still today, everyone has faced adversity. Certain groups of people have faced more adversity than others because they have been oppressed due to race and religion, among other things. Adversity breaks one down until they can be broken no more, and although adversity has a negative connotation, overcoming adversity can make one stronger, turning it into a positive.
The Roman poet, Horace once said, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant”. Horace argues that difficult circumstances critically impact the development of one’s character. Although some may argue that character will reveal itself regardless if adversity is present, I agree with Horace’s perspective, adversity determines one's potential capabilities, strengthens personal values, and provides a feeling of self-worth. Sure, there are cases in which prosperous circumstances lead to internal development.
What does resilience really mean to you? The literal definition to resilience is the ability to cope with problems and setbacks. In the story Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, she shows us all different kind of ways that the characters in her story used the skills that Kendra Cherry was talking about, to help them out of every situation. In this story it shows how certain situations affect people in different ways and how each person goes through seven skills. The characteristic that Louie undergoes is the skill of Strong Problem-Solving.
Adversity can take us by surprise, but everyone at some point in life experiences it. The way our personal identity can be shaped is through our phases of adversity. The experiences of dealing with difficulties can shape the way we view life and the actions that will show our persona. When we persevere adversity and obstacles it shows our reputation and our true type of identity. In the play Hamlet, William Shakespeare, illustrates the way Hamlet, as well as other characters, deal with adversity through the types of motives they are seeking.

Resilience is known as bouncing back from the adversities and bringing in strength to cope to difficulties. Adversities happen at personal, community and organisational level. Resilience allows the person to come out of the adversity, rather than staying with it and to move forward further. This is a way of maintaining positive mental health and maintaining one’s own well being in the midst of adverse conditions. It enables a person to maintain positive health in the midst of challenges (Mowbray, 2011).
Resilience as a developmental attribute seems necessary for teachers to be more confident and successful in their teaching. More
Hardy, Concato & Gill (2004) stated that resilient people are those who display “the capacity to remain well, recover, or even thrive in face of adversity”. Masten (2001) as mentioned that they are the ordinary person dealing with the challenges and tragedies of everyday real life. For instance, the response of many Americans to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and individuals’ efforts to rebuild their lives shows their resiliency. Being resilient does not mean that a person does not have or had experience difficulty or distress; the emotional pain and sadness are common but the path to resilience is likely to involve considerable emotional distress. Resilience is not a trait which people either has or do not have whereas it involves
Amy presents with extreme anxiety bordering on depression. Her demeanour and body language reflect fear and reluctance to share her life story. As a counsellor I am faced by such situations numerous times whereby active listening and non judgemental questioning break the ice. Empathy and building rapport is essential to establish a therapeutic relationship. Amy's trajectory is full of mistrust and dysfunctional relationships.
For example, animal experimentations conceptualized stress as a physiological drive that is triggered by negative environmental stimuli. As such, coping behaviors were seen as acts of controlling how we respond to these negative stimuli. On the other hand, psychoanalytic ego psychology presented a trait and style approach to coping. In this perspective, the traits and characteristics that individuals possess will determine how they react to particular types of stimuli. However, there are limitations to this approach.
The Importance of Resilience Resilience is the way towards adapting in the midst of misfortune, injury, catastrophe, dangers, or huge swathes of stress. It signifies rebound from troublesome encounters by honing the abilities required to give you a chance to travel through misfortune, as opposed to getting noticeably characterized by it. For better understanding Resilience is the procedure and result of effectively adjusting to troublesome or testing life encounters and the capacity to transcend one's conditions. I myself an ardent student and practised resilience to bounce back from a catastrophic event which rocked my life. In the event, if I had not practised resilience, that overarching circumstance would have overpowered by misfortune and my value would have impacted into a more serious danger of utilizing undesirable methods for dealing with stress to manage life's difficulties, for example, animosity towards self or others.
According to Masten (2001) “resiliency refers to a class of phenomena characterized by good outcomes in spite of serious threats to adaptation or development” (p. 228). Garmezy (1991) considers the intelligence level of an individual and ability to possess the mind power to tackle an adverse situation as one pleases as the core characteristics of a resilient individual. Garmezy (1991) resiliency framework allows student affairs professionals is to examine the strengths of disadvantaged students who are faced with various life stressors, but
