Context:The Aerva pseudotomentosa commonly known as ‘Bui’ a plant of arid region possess medicinal properties and used as ethanobotanical medicine for the treatment of inflammation, rheumatic pain and healing of wounds.
Material and methods: The antioxidant effect of Aerva pseudotomentosa was evaluated by DPPH (1, 1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil) free radical scavenging method, reducing power assay, scavenging of hydrogen peroxide, anti–lipid peroxidation assay in Flex seed homogenate. Antiinflammatory activity was evaluated by using carragennan and formalin induced paw edema method. Qualitative and quantitative phytochemical investigation has been performed for determination of presence of phytochemicals and HPTLC fingerprinting analysis for standardization of plant.
Results: The Aerva pseudotomentosa aqueous extract (APAE) showed significant antioxidant activity performed in various models. The APAE (200 and 400 mg/kg) cause significant reduction in inflammation in carragennan and formalin induced paw edema. In dry desertic area of Pakistan six species of this genus found (Khan et al., 1970). Plants of Aerva genus are popular as medicinal herb in several traditional systems of medicine. Various species of this genus are used as analgesic anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and also used as valuable remedy for cough, sore throat, ingestion and healing of wounds (Pullaiah et al.,2006 ).According to the chemical point of view various phytoconstituents including flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, carbohydrate (Khan et al., 1982; Emam 1999) and phenolic compounds (Kumar et al., 2013) have been reported from these species of genus
