African Killer Bees Invasive Species

An invasive species is any species that has been introduced to an environment where it isn't originally from. Also this species tends to be quite a nuisance because of its rapid growth in population it might even demolish other species in that region. The invasive species I have researched about is the African killer bee. In this essay I will be talking about where this species has originated from, the effects on humans, plants, and animals, the economy, and how it could potentially affect future ecosystems, and how we humans are trying to control the growth of this species.
The killer bees are considered an invasive species because they haven't originated from the environment they are staying in. From the title of this species you may have …show more content…

The African Killer Bee is quite different from other bees not only because of its deadly venom but because of how it survives. The Killer Bee can survive on sparse amounts of food unlike other bees such as The European bee, but reports show that The Killer Bee spends more time collecting pollen (What bees eat , n.d.). The reason is because they need extra protein to produce more blood. This bee is a danger to other bees in the area because they are all fighting for pollen. For example, there are 1000 native species of bees in the California area most of these are bumblebees, if the African Killer Bee needs to store a lot of pollen what will happen to these species? Not only that some species of bees have very specific need for a certain type of plant/flower so if the killer bee takes a lot of pollen from one certain type of plant what will happen to that species of bee (Plants to attract bumblebees and other interesting native bees, 2013)? The population of The Killer Bees also affects the economy in more ways than one. Such as, beekeeping because they are having troubles because there are more expenses, and more difficulty finding sites for bees because of public fear.(Africanized Honey Bee, 2014). Overall the impact of the bees is greater than just than how it affects the …show more content…

Although these bees may attack without being provoked sometimes they attack because they are agitated. Many things may agitate these bees such as: by vibrations like those caused by power equipment, tractors, lawnmowers, etc. (Africanized Honey Bees , n.d.) Also the place where African bees create their habitat is relatively close to humans. These bees are to be taken seriously because these bees have taken the lives of many. For example, on May 7th 2014, an elderly lady in California had been stung more than 1000 times. Luckily the firefighters had been called and they had rushed her to the hospital fast enough to save her life, but she is still recovering from serious injuries (nydailynews, n.d.). Another incident that occurred is in Arizona where four people were injured and one was pronounced dead. This incident took place on October 9th 2014 in Douglas Arizona. Witnesses say that about 800000 swarmed these five individuals and had no intention of letting go. Reports say that one man had been stung 100 times and gone into a cardiac arrest (Killer Bee Attack Leaves 1 Dead, 4 Injured In Arizona, n.d.). There are several other incidents just like these two that have occurred ever since. This just goes to show that this species is extremely harmful to many things not just the ecosystem, plants, animals but humans as
