Therefore it is important to be extra vigilant when working in the following scenarios:
• Working with Machinery
Machinery often poses a risk as blockages are common. It is vital that the PTO is turned off and the engine is stopped before attempting to free a blockage. It is important that all machinery is serviced regularly and in perfect working order. All safety guards should be in place at all times. It is important to maintain machinery such as tractors and other road legal vehicles that may pose a risk to others when they leave the farmyard. Regular checks should be made in the cab, on the windscreen and windows, on the mirrors, on the lights and indicators, tyres and wheels and on the engine and oils and coolants should be clean and changed regularly.
• Risks posed by Animals/Livestock
All animals and livestock can be dangerous despite being in the farm environment and all pose a serious risk to humans. Temperament of all animals should be kept under constant review. All livestock should have warning signage around them in order to warn others on the farm there may a risk posed to them, especially near a bull. It is important that all livestock handling and loading facilities are safe and easy to
An article by PBS stated, “Today, America 's meat industry is the nation 's largest agricultural sector and sales of meat and poultry exceed $100 billion a year in the U.S.” This astounding statistics is one of many reasons why we should be more careful. A different article by UFCW identified that a whopping 20% of work injuries in the United States of America resulted within the meatpacking industry. As a country, we must strive to make this a safe environment to work in by reporting injures and hazards.
Under work health and safety laws workers and other people at our workplace must take reasonable care that they do not adversely affect
The word dangerous is used to describe something that can cause harm to an individual: a dangerous job is just that. For the first time in the book, Schlosser focuses on what he considers the most dangerous job in the fast food industry: sanitation workers. He does this throughout chapter eight in the section “the worst”. Schlosser incorporates vivid descriptions of slaughter house conditions as well as accounts involving those affected by the lack of safety precautions to implicitly compare the similarities between sanitation workers of the slaughter house and the cattle that are also being murdered there. Schlosser’s main purpose for this section, and the chapter as a whole, is to emphasize the hazardous conditions that workers must endure
Danger can bring about the feelings of fear and vulnerability to the reader. The author’s love for animals brings about the feeling of concern. Having experienced a deep bond with an animal, they are worried about the overall safety of
The Civil War had already ended when agriculture began to develop, bringing about changes across the country, particularly in the West. American agriculture began in rural regions that were urbanized, resulting in a surge of people in the fields and cities where employment and hard labor were supplied manually. It has grown significantly as a result of advanced economic and social changes towards its industrialization for expansion. It increased production among the families of farmers, who served through hard and difficult situations. Throughout the period of 1865-1900, American agriculture changed rural inhabited areas, expanding prospects for migration and urbanization, industrialization growth with advanced machinery, and evolved farming
The dangers of Factory Farming in America Traditionally farm cows and chickens roam around the wild free to eat whatever they wanted and have unlimited space. But now in the need for more food for the fastly increasing population. Factory farms have taken over the lives and wellbeing of these animals. Now “Broiler Chickens” and farm cows are confined to little spaces and are being fed food that doesn't fit their diet.
“The vision of a huge fertile garden extending from the Appalachians to the Pacific Ocean had inspired Americans since the early days of the republic” (Out of Many - A History of the American People, pg. 622). Since its beginning, the American ways of farming had always been gradually evolving, but in the time between 1865 and 1900, it transformed like never before. The American tradition of agriculture would experience dramatic changes, as the growth of production and agribusiness would ensue from revolutions in technology, massive increase in population, and alterations in government policies. A major factor in changing the way of agriculture was the new technology being developed in farming and transportation.
This problem can be seen across the agriculture industry, not just in the equine portion. Millions of animals are in unfit homes with unfit owners that don’t care about the wellbeing of their animals. Sadly, there is no one solution to such an extensive problem, however there are steps that can be taken to reduce this occurrence. Being educated and aware that animal abuse is happening and being able to recognize the signs of it is the first step. Another way to break down this problem is making sure the person who is buying an animal is knowledgeable and prepared to care for that animal.
In fact, the animals are often stored in small cages or spaces with barley any room to move, many will catch a disease from their poor quality of living. Social interaction is crucial because the animals become tired of the same environment, this leads to aggression. To control the aggression, animals are often pumped with drugs. Often, if an animal is sick there will be no veterinary help because of the high cost that is required, as a result, cattle have died from dehydration or other reasons regarding the lack of care. Because the animals are seen as a profit they are bred in a way that is convenient for the slaughterhouse.
There is an important question many people today wonder; I found that there are several people who see how showing livestock affects kids in school and in life. I chose this topic because so many people think that showing livestock is just a waste of time and money, but they have no idea what it entails. Other people don’t realize that showing livestock isn’t about the money or just having a pet. I am writing this paper because everybody should know that showing isn’t about having a pet, it’s about gaining responsibilities and learning new things that can help you later in life. Showing livestock helps children go farther in life because it teaches them more responsibility, they work harder, and they never give up on their dreams.
But this isn’t what actually goes on. The following information is located in the “Vegucated” video on Youtube. Most cows we consume come from factories that place cows in a really confined space and feed them slaughterhouse remains, chicken coop waste, candy, corn, soy and plastic pallets. This isn’t just only cows, other animals such as pigs and chickens are treated the same or even worse. Mother pigs are placed in a cage in which they can
P1 Electrical workshop - Electrical apprenticeship workshop Here I will be explaining the relevant legislation and regulations applicable to an electrical apprenticeship workshop. Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR) 1989 this is relevant to electrical apprenticeship workshop as the employer will have to give training/instructions to the apprentice about the electrical safety regulations also the employer will need to make sure that there will need to be electrical risk assessment. Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 this regulation is relevant to Electrical apprenticeship workshop as this is essential for all employers to provide the workers with PPE therefore in the electrical workshop the employer will need to provide the apprentice workers with PPE that is made to be worn in an electrical workshop.
Unsafe work practice that can affect the well-being of individuals include: Rough handling, for example pushing, pulling, dragging. Unsafe administration of medication, for example, failure to check dosage. Ignoring health needs and social needs such as clean clothing and personal hygiene. Visible injuries or marks of abuse on body and complaints not taken seriously can put them at more danger, harm and risk of abuse. I will ensure that I keep to all the procedures for checking for abuse and the wellbeing of the individuals that I work with; by following these and the individual’s care plan I keep within the minimum standards of care and also work in a person centred way to make sure all individuals are happy and safe.
Manual handling operations regulations (MHOR) 1992 (as amended 2002). o As far as possible, avoid any manual handling activity that is hazardous and could result in injury. o Where it is not practical to avoid, then risk assess and put measures in place to reduce or eliminate the risk of injury. o Employers must provide all necessary equipment and training.
If you work in the trucking industry, it is important to be aware of the hazards you face and ways counteract them and stay safe on the job. Generally speaking, the biggest risks fall into three categories: traffic accidents, loading and unloading injuries and repetitive stress injuries. Traffic accidents Because of the strict regulations
