Since the times of the most early civilizations, this area that surrounds the river Indus has always been rich in terms of the arable land it provides. This area has always been the center of habitation for the civilizations that have stepped in the Indus valley.
With the formation of Pakistan it was inevitable that agriculture would be the main source of income and revenue for this country and it has been proved likewise. Major crops comprise of rice, cotton, wheat and sugarcane. This category alone contributes to 6.5% of the GDP of Pakistan. (International Research Journal of Finance and Economics, 2012). Though these figures might look promising but the most important point here is that the main source on which the economy relies; cotton, is on a downfall. The huge amounts of production of cotton, rice and wheat is exported to various countries in exchange for foreign exchange which further is utilized for the import of cars and industrial machinery. The agriculture even supports the other sectors of the economy such as the education and health sector. For the reason that the surplus is so huge in amounts that even after catering the rapidly growing population of Pakistan, there is enough produce to contribute to a significant amount of Pakistan’s exports.
Agriculture is also a provider of raw materials for the manufacturing industries. The manufacturing industries are the most important source of development for any country, though the manufacturing sector will be discussed in further detail. The major raw material being cotton that is used in the textile industry which is a one of the major exports of Pakistan. It is even a source of raw materials for the sports goods of Pakistan as the raw material for sports goods are obtained from livestock which falls under agriculture
