Air pollution: Bag Filters
(Part 1)

Air pollution is a type of pollution that effects and contaminates the air. The mixture of impurities in the atmosphere could make the air toxic. Air pollution could be harmful to plants, humans and animals by making them diseased. Some of the effects are acid rain, global warming, and increase in UV radiation and increases the harmful gasses in the atmosphere.
One of the methods to control dry air pollution is through the use of bag filters. This method is conventionally known as a bag house and is used as a device to reduce or control air pollution caused from power plants and various industries. An underlying characteristic that bag filters have is that they collect dust efficiently, therefore making …show more content…

A mixture of the above procedures results in the formation of a layer of dust on the filter, which can eventually increase the resistance to gas flow. For this reason, it is advisable to clean the filter on a regular basis.
The Bag filters are explicitly designed to incorporate the specific requirements of particular industries or uses. Some of the applications of bag filters are cement, biochemical, pharmaceuticals, bulk chemicals and even industries like food industry and paint industry [1].
Bag filters are categorized by the cleaning method employed. The most common types are mechanical shakers, reverse gas and pulse jet [3].

The cleaning process involves shaking the horizontal slabs from which the bags are hoisted upward layers of dust are shaken off as the vibration from a motor driven shaft creates ripples. Shaker bag filters range from small, handhskaer devices to large grouped units. Operations can either be sporadic or endless depending on the process. For processes that operate on a batch basis, after the completion of the batch, the filter can be cleaned. On the other hand, continuous processes use compartmentalized filters, which allow airflow to be diverted during the cleaning process. It is vital that pressure levels are not positive during the shake cycle as this can affect the cleaning process. Space requirements are relatively large as a result of the air to cloth ratio being significantly low. Shaker bag filters are popular in the mineral industry because of the simplicity of their
