LAHORE SMOG: A SPECIAL CASE
Air contamination is an issue that should be critically tended to as Lahore is presently considered amongst the most dirtied urban communities in Asia. In the winter months, with deferred rain, the chilly and persistently dry conditions concentrate all contaminants in the lower levels of the environment, bringing on the smog to spread everywhere throughout the Punjab. Each December, thick fog appears over Lahore, shutting out the winter daylight, wrapping up the motorway operations after nightfall and keeping flights from arriving during the evening.
The issue has deteriorated in the course of the most recent five years because of the large amounts of contamination and poor air quality in the city, made by expanding vehicular and industrial discharges. Along with winter months now there is presently a lasting haze hanging over the city, even in summer months, that is just calmed when it downpours and the contamination is washed away for a brief span. In areas close to watering canals, rice paddies and streams where there is more moisture, the fog gets much thicker.

In 2005, the authority of the Ministry of Environment, Pak-EPA built up the Air Quality Monitoring System in five noteworthy urban areas that incorporate Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta with help of Japan. The task envisaged the establishment of fixed and portable air observing stations in these five urban communities to gather information about the encompassing air quality. Additionally, Pak-EPA has started a training program under Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The key target of this project is to reinforce specialized expertise of Environmental Protection Agencies keeping in mind the end goal to freely and independently work as of recently settled Air Quality Monitoring System and research
