The Al-anon meeting was a welcoming experience. I liked the fact that I got a chance to participate in the process This participation aided in my understanding of The Twelve Steps and the Twelve Traditions compared to hearing them being recited. Two of the member’s that were present had been attending the support group for ten years. The way they framed their experiences the support group proved to be a long-term therapeutic gathering for them. Even after they had faced the Alcoholism in their families this was a accommodating support system for them throughout their life. Consequently, due to the size of the group I believe it had a family type of environment for those who attended. Hence, the one session I attended I felt a part of the support …show more content…
It is mentioned throughout the family and addicts’ program structure that the Twelve Step Program does not belong to a denomination. However, God is mentioned numerous times during the gatherings. As well as the literature, literature such as the Serenity Prayer, and the Lord’s Prayer were recited in every meeting. The support groups with these beliefs are more available in our area versus those programs intended for people who are Atheist or belief in something other than God. I myself had a tough time following some of the literature and completely considered it because I don’t have strong belief in that God aids in our recovery from what is conflicting us. When I searched for meeting availability, there were only two meetings available that appeared to accommodate a more “freethinking” addicts. I couldn’t attend that meeting and now I wish I could have to see what it would have been identical or different among both meeting’s. Undoubtedly, this program seems to work for those who have attended and followed it. I do wonder what the outcomes are for those who are non-believers in god or other religious entities. Overall, this was a great experience and I respect the difficult effort the families and addicts put into their road to
Thank God, I was never a drinker or a smoker and I have never done any drugs - ever (and yes that includes marijuana). And this is before I became a Christian. I was just never attracted to the party lifestyle. I candidly believe that hypocrisy in the church is perhaps the biggest issue out of the six themes.
Their stay includes prayer, daily classes, Group Sessions and Drug Group Sessions, and Biblical Counseling. After going through several months of rehabilitation, they are then connected with job opportunities and given the privilege of saving money while staying in the facility. They are then released back into “real” society with a clean slate, a career, and the finances for
They have a 12 percent success rate for people who are sober for ten years and these meetings also have a very high depression and suicide rates because of their 12 step program. The AA meetings limit their success target only alcoholics as its main priority and unless you have a problem with alcohol you cannot be a member of the AA. I believe that if you have any type of addiction you deserve the help you need especially if you are looking for a change and want to better yourself. These AA
Murray (2019) took a group of students to the Dominican Republic and says this,“Nightly debrief sessions for the teams are often marked by crying, hugging, and contemplative silences as the group tried to reconcile their own lives with the lives of their new friends in the Dominican Republic, realizing just how lucky they are.” (para. 21) This displays how people who could have never met come together to serve a common goal which is to help others and spread the light of Christ. Consequently, participants often do not realize how even though they come to serve people in need they are the ones benefiting the most from this experience of building friendships and forming memories that will last a lifetime. Mustain also says (2012) “Relationships formed with participants allowed the children to embark on the risk of love.
In the early hours of March 2013, I remember waking up and praying for the nightmare to be over because I felt I had no way out of my current situation. My life had come to a point where I was no longer in control and heroin was controlling my every decision. A few short hours after that fictitious “fox hole” prayer, I found myself handcuffed in the back of an uncover officers vehicle on my way to Lackawanna County Prison. I had never felt so alone, but at the same time, I had never felt so relieved in my life. Later I would realize that what I perceived as the worst day of my life would soon become the event that I am most grateful for because I was given an opportunity to break the chains of addiction and to grow into the person that I had always dreamed I could be.
AA Meeting Reflection Many people who have never had an addiction may not understand the difficulty of becoming better, and that is because we have never been in circumstances where our life depended upon a substance (Berry & Ramnath, 2013). However, for people who have had a substance addiction, the difficulty to becoming better is harder because they need to regain control over their thoughts and lives. According to the alcoholic anonymous recovery program, a twelve-step meeting is a very efficient program that helps people regain control over their thoughts and their lives. One vital part of this program is the twelve traditions and twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Although the overall goal of this meeting is for members to stay sober while
The older man stated, “The thing that will save you, is if you shut up”. I found this to be very rude, as did many of the other members. I, however, did not say anything because it was not my place. Other than that short moment, I really enjoyed this meeting. In the end, it was beneficial to me because of my family history with alcoholism.
Although they have denied that any religious doctrine prevails in the organization. However, it difficult for me to agree with that statement since the meeting I was at seem to have a strong religious regimen from beginning to end. Besides, 12 step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous could contribute their success to the common goal the each member would like to reach: staying abstinence from alcohol no matter what urges. And the overall point of AA meetings would benefit someone who’s really to make a change in their life and being in control by alcohol. That person going into a AA meeting should keep in mind to they are not alone going in, the development of a caring relationship within the members, and that they will notice a height sense of spirituality.
I went to Alcoholic Anonymous meeting on February 09, 2017. The meeting took place in Ascension Lutheran Church on Main Street, Amherst. Prior to the meeting, I thought I would be uncomfortable if I went, but I am really glad that I went. It was an enlightening learning experience for me.
The meeting was different than I expected. I expected a small group of people sitting in a circle and telling their stories and it was very different from that. It was an extremely positive place. There were people ranging in ages and people ranging on length of sobriety. Some people there have been sober for over 25 years and some people had less than a week
Days leading up to my visit, I begin to think of all the biases I had about AA meetings. I thought of the fear of possibly sitting next to hardcore alcoholics, I thought of my possibility of being attacked for not coming in there with a problem, and then I thought of all the reasons why AA meetings wouldn’t work. As I completed my experience, I soon learned that this is the same biases clients have when being educated on AA meetings and prepared to attend
In my first session, the group started with a silent prayer, and read Alcoholic announcement. Next, the reader introduced the group leader. The group leader stated that goals that needs to be accomplish in this group which is stay sober day by day. The group leader also discuss in the group session about alcoholism. The group leader stated that alcoholism is a disease, and alcoholism progress and a chronic disorder.
My first activity was sitting in the bed board meeting. This takes place every morning with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), departments nurse managers, departments charge nurses, house supervisor, wound care nurse, Infectious Disease (ID) and social services. The purpose for this meetings is to address important information to plan the day. Some of the information that was mention was: How many patients are admitted at this time, open beds, pending discharges, foley telemetry, central lines, sitters, and inmates.
