What do you think when you hear the name Al Capone? I, along with many others, think of the middle-aged gangster who caused numerous deaths and deserved an exceeding amount of jail time for the crimes he committed. One may never think of his life as a child or the fact that he hated his well-known nickname, Scarface. The focal point of this paper is to inform you, the reader, not only of the common knowledge of this infamous gangster but of the information unknown to most including vivid details and excitement about his life.
Alphonso Gabriel Caponi, more famously known as Al Capone, or Scarface, was born on the date of January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York. Al’s family was poor. His parents were immigrants from Italy and he had eight siblings. Because Al’s parents spoke mostly Italian, Al had trouble reading and writing in English, and he quit school at the age of thirteen. After Al dropped out of school, he joined a local gang. He soon learned to enjoy violence. Al spent most of his time doing favors for his hero, the gangster John Torrio. As Torrio’s “business” grew, he decided to move to Chicago and expand there. Torrio asked Al to go with him and be his right-hand man. Al greedily accepted the offer.

Because Capone and his gang members escaped years upon years of jail time through bribery, the President sent Elliot Ness and the “Untouchables” to catch Capone. The “Untouchables” were a group of men that no one could manipulate or bribe. After numerous failed attempts to find any evidence of extreme criminal activity, they found the only thing that could ensure jail time for Capone. Tax evasion. Capone was put into the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta for tax evasion in 1931. In addition, he murdered two men in New York however he was not punished due to the gangland etiquette that no one admitted to hearing or seeing a thing. After that, Capone moved to Chicago to work for Yale’s old mentor John Torrio and he then became an influential lieutenant in the Colosimo mob. Torrio, with time, became a main member in the mob and Capone gained experience being Torrio’s strong right arm. But then, things started to change to the better for Capone when Torrio was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt which forced him to retire. Capone became the boss and built a fearsome reputation in the ruthless gang rivalries of the period.
The infamous Al Capone who ruled an empire of crime which included: gambling, bootlegging, bribery, murder, robbery, narcotics trafficking, auto theft, kidnapping, and much more. Has finally been arrested. It had seemed he could dodge all law enforcement and was untouchable, but justice has proved him wrong. On May, 17th Capone and his bodyguard were arrested for carrying concealed weapons and shortly after were sentenced to terms of one year each. Many know him as the American gangster or scarface.
Al Capone was seeing more crime and more people getting hurt that did nothing to be harmed. Since Al Capone was the biggest crime lord, he made all the other gangs to “tone it down” on their crimes. There were no crimes for two months. After being captured he went to court and tried to bribe the court after finding out who was going to be there but at the last second, the court changed, and Al Capone could bribe his way out and was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison.
He served time in an Atlanta prison until August 1934, when he was moved to Alcatraz in San Francisco because the inmates at the Atlanta prison felt Capone was getting special treatment. Capone remained at Alcatraz until his health went downhill. The syphilis he contracted at a young age was causing issues with this health. He was becoming confused and disoriented. Al Capone was released from prison six and half years early because of good behavior.

After he was found guilty, he was sent to Alcatraz which was the worst prison in all of America. Capone made an escape attempt, but it failed. He got released early because he was diagnosed with syphilis. He ended up dying of a heart attack on January 5th, 1947 (“ Al Capone- Scarface”).

This organized crime, dehumanization, and corruption, became the ultimate image of Chicago for people throughout the world. He was largely immersed in things like gambling, prostitution, and the illegal sale of liquor.
