Character Development Some people read because they love to, some people read because they have too ,but when people read they may not notice what the author is doing. Authors use many literary devices that make the piece you are reading worthwhile. Literary devices do many things whether it is to develop a character; build structure or even describe how a person looks. I will be explaining the various literary devices Gennifer Choldenko used to develop the characters in the book “Al Capone Does My Shirts.” The book “Al Capone Does My Shirts” is based on a group of kids growing up on Alcatraz Island, which holds a prison full of felons murders and many other convict’s one of the most dangerous prisons of them all. The author Genniffer Choldenko …show more content…
Baseball is Moose 's favorite activity and when his dad said he wasn 't allowed to play he didn 't go and throw a fit, he just dealt with it. “Give me your ball and glove.” (35) this is like the one time my mom took my dirt bike away and I pretended like it didn 't bother me but I was very upset. When Moose tells stories about Alcatraz he 's dealing with a conflict within himself. He knows he shouldn 't be running his mouth but he wants to act cool so he tells Tales all about Al Capone and Alcatraz. “I 've seen Scarface Capone with my own two eyes.” (40) Then Moose gets caught by the Warden with the laundry service and he almost gets his dad fired. We all deal with conflict differently, but this shows Moose 's maturity he didn 't flip out even though it wasn 't his fault he took …show more content…
“Are you sure you aren 't in the wrong class.” I remember my first day of 7th grade I felt out of place because I was one of the smallest kids. Then the author describes how fast Moose swings the baseball bat. When Moose is playing baseball he keeps on missing the ball and striking out because he is just too big of a guy they don 't have a big enough bat for him. Whenever I used to play baseball I had the opposite problem. Then the next way the author uses imagery is when Moose likes Piper so he asks Scout if he thinks she is pretty. Throughout the book we can tell that moose has a crush on Piper. “Hey Scout what 's your opinion on Piper do you think she 's cute?” (141) this shows two things the first thing is that Piper might be a good looking girl. Then it shows that Moose has a crush on her. From personal experience I know that when I like a girl I will ask my friends about
After this event he began to keep a much lower profile, attempting to stay out of the media as much as possible, but it has been noted that he engaged in at least one more destructive act of violence before he abstained for good. Suspecting that two of his peers had betrayed them, he invited them over to dinner before he brutally beat them to death with a baseball bat (“Al Capone,” Biography.com). The most interesting aspect of this event from a psychological standpoint is not the fact that he killed two men, but it was how he did. Observing an age old tradition, he gave the men a great feast and pretended to be great friends with them before murdering them. This gives the researcher a look into the mind of Capone, as he could have just as easily had the men shot while walking down the street, or in any other creative way that he could think of.
When Capone was arrested it became one of the major accomplishments of the 1930s. Al Capone’s childhood led to what he became. As a kid Capone joined two “kid gangs” called the Brooklyn Rippers and Forty
I am currently reading, Al Capone Does My Homework by Gennifer Choldenko. The main characters are siblings Moose and Natalie Flanagin. If you’re the son of a guard on Alcatraz island in 1936 comes with major responsibilities and problems, especially when your dad gets promoted to associate warden, the number two spot on Alcatraz. The cons on the island create a point system for targeting prison employees. Since wardens are at the top, Moose’s dad could be in big trouble.
One thing that i've noticed in Al Capone Does My Shirts is that the Moose and his sister, Nathaniel have a very special connection. Nathaniel is a very special girl that has autism, Moose likes to watch Nathaniel play and protects her from anyone who is making fun of her. Moose said that “He loves Nathaniel to death”. This probably means that they do everything together and love each other. I think that moose is very protective of his sister and will never let her out of his sight that people are gonna make fun of her.
“Because Charles you need the extra practice,” Mom said. “No I don’t mom,” said Charles. “Yes you do and it doesn’t matter I already signed you up for it so, you're going to do it,” said Mom. When Charles got to middle school he was one of the best players on the field.
Thomas Foster's How to Read Literature Like a Professor, is a thought provoking guide to reading literature. This book helps with understanding the “language of reading” and the importance of details. Foster opens up a new side of literature where rather than reading emotionally, you dig deeper into the grammar of the literary work to discover the true meaning. How to Read Literature Like a Professor, is beneficial when reading any kind of literary work. It explains the particular “set of conventions and patterns, codes and rules” (Foster xxv) used when dealing with literary works.
The reader has to be able to understand or imagine what the devices mean, to enhance the story. A few examples in the story, were difficult to understand due to the reference. For the most part, this story had some great literary devices. In the story The Most Dangerous Game, Richard Connell

Literary devices are used by an author to enhance a story. These devices can help to make a piece more descriptive, complex and thrilling. Literary devices can also help the reader further understand the text. Conflict, characterization, and imagery are exemplary examples of literary devices used by authors. Conflict is one of the most essential literary devices.
Capone 's childhood showed the police how bad kids were and that they also needed to look out for kids. Capone helped people through the tough times right before the great depression, he produced jobs, got his people want they wanted, and influenced women and kids not to do what he did. Al Capone did a lot to influence this
In the novel In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, he uses pathos, diction and tone to characterize the killers. He characterizes Dick Hickock as the main character and Perry Smith as a tag-along. Capote mainly shows sympathy towards Perry because of Perry’s messed up past and his mental instability. Capote creates this sympathy through syntax and his elaborate sentence structure with the use of specific punctuation. He also has a very unique writing style with an interesting character development.
Did you know that authors use many different literary devices to tell a story? A literary device is a technique writers use to make their stories unique and interesting. Literary devices like simile, metaphor, suspense, personification, allusion, irony, foreshadowing, and imagery are used in lots of stories. In the short story ¨The Most Dangerous Game”, Richard Connell uses literary devices such as suspense and simile to help the reader gain a clear understanding of the story. In this essay, I will provide two examples of literary devices used throughout Richard Connell’s short story.
To begin with, Erik decides to play football, Dad’s favorite sport. Since Dad loves football, and Erik plays football, all eyes are on him. Erik becomes the main attraction, and Paul is left on the side all alone. Paul started to get upset that he wasn’t getting much attention at all, so he asked his dad, “‘What position did I play when I did get into a game?’” His dad responded, “‘How am I supposed to know that?’”
When we read, we want to truly enjoy what is written we need to become a part of the story. And literary devices help us to better see and feel the storyline. A good storyline captures all of our senses, these devices draw the reader in, paint a picture, heighten the senses, and pull at us emotionally. Throughout Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story The Birthmark, some of the key literary devices used were irony symbol and theme.
Al Capone’s routine engagement in criminal behaviors led to a tendency of irresponsibility, unlawfulness, and
