Alex Alonso talks about something very personal in his article “Overcoming Bias: A Personal Statement.” Coming from Latino roots, he has found himself a victim to bias. Bias, (according to the Glossary, The SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge, 2017) is conscious or unconscious beliefs that influence a person’s perceptions or actions, which may cause that person to become partial or prejudiced. A past professor of his offered him and his high school peers some words of wisdom; “A mind made noble leads a noble life.” This piece of advice has consoled Alonso for years. The assigned reading for chapter 6, Testimony by Sonny Singh is a firsthand account of the author as he fell victim to the prejudice towards certain racial and ethnic groups that followed the events of September 11,2001. Sonny Singh belongs to an ethnic group called Sikhs which are very identifiable because of their appearances. Most Sikh men wear a turban and have beards. This is a religious requirement for them and they consider it a matter of faith and prestige. In this article, the author has mentioned various instances where he has faced prejudice by strangers even years after the 9/11 attack and how it affects his everyday life as an educator and musician.
Everyone holds biases whether they believe it or not. Facing your biases will help you overcome and better yourself. Biases are often personal but can also be professional. Ignoring these can led to harm further down the road. I have a personal bias for immigrants, being one myself I often feel for fellow immigrants.

Many things happen in every day life that people have become so accustomed to that they just assume they are “the norm.” Some of the things said are racist comments and are taken with a grain of salt, some are joked about, and some are embraced, but some are just disrespectful. The movie Crash shows a great number of daily occurrences with racism and classism in everyday life. The movie breaks down the character’s normal lives to show the audience how easily offensive people’s days can be. Whether it is making a comment to a friend or belittling someone for their job qualifications or for their background, many different types of racism happen and can originate from many different areas or personal reasons.
One would think prejudice is a thing of the past. Unfortunately, that is not the case, prejudice is still a common factor in todays society. Vincent N. Parrillo’s essay “Causes of Prejudice,” helped me to understand how we are affected not just psychologically but in a sociological way as well, as John A. Camacho explains in his A Few Bad Apples opinion piece published in the Pacific Daily News. Both forms of prejudice are continued to be explained through Stud Turkel’s “C.P Ellis,” he gives us an understanding of psychological and sociological prejudice through C.P Ellis’own experiences. This furthers our understanding on how we can be affected by both psychological and sociological prejudices.

Although, there is not a simple answer to what causes prejudice, three of Parrillo’s theories that have an immense influence on becoming prejudice are socialization, economic competition and social norms. Cultural bias highlights differences among viewpoints, persons and groups that preference one culture over all. We can describe cultural bias as discriminative because it introduces one group's accepted behavior as valued and distinguishable from another lesser valued societal group. Cultural bias was found to be the major determinant of where certain people live, what their opportunities in education and health care. Bias is a tendency to favor of one person, group, a thing or point of view over another, often, in an unfair way. Bias can be a personal opinion or a more public opinion, such as a news story, that only presents facts that support one point of view.
Bias is prejudice about someone or something which has been created based on incomplete information. More often bias has a negative effect as it affects other people, our way of thinking that could be driven into stereotypes frame. Every day we face with a huge number of biases and some of us even do not know about the existence of them. If it gets to that point when something suffers from it, people need to overcome biases. There are a lot of examples of biases in our world.
People may develop biases toward or against an individual, an ethnic group, a nation, a religion, a social class, a political party, theoretical paradigms and ideologies within academic domains, or a species. Biased means one-sided, lacking a neutral viewpoint, or not having an open mind. Bias can come in many forms and is related to prejudice and intuition. Bias on outgroups: When some individuals are categorized as being part of one group, they are considered part of the "ingroup"; others are considered to be part of the "outgroup" Members of the outgroup are viewed as less similar and, as a result “ingroups” may have biases against them.
