Alice Malsenior was born in Eatonton Georgia on February 9, 1944 she being the eight and youngest child of Minnie Tallulah grant and Willie lee walker, her parent were sharecropper. When she about eight years old her and brother were playing with BB guns her brother accidently shot her in the eye, leaving her blind in her right eye. Considering that happening, she became a shy person and she felt like individuals really did not understand the person she was. In result to that, she fell in love with ready and writing, especially poetry. As she got older, she went on to Spellman College in Atlanta Georgia. During this time, she became a part of the civil rights movement. Later on, she transferred to Sarah Lawrence College in New York. In 1962, she was invited to Martin Luther king Jr. Home. During this time, she landed a job in New York with the welfare department, while still receiving her bachelor degree. Johnson would collect money out of the pot in church just so Dee can go school. Dee education is important to her and but in other words it slightly pushed her away from her family. In a way, Dee feels like she is somewhat better than they are. Dee mom states that when she would read to them stating “She used to read to us without pity; forcing words, lies, other folks’ habits, whole lives upon us two, sitting trapped and ignorant underneath her voice”. This article states that Dee somewhat loses herself in all of this she goes to college gets and education but forget where she come from forgot how she used to be. Dee still has yet to educate her family but counties to make fun of them and chastise them about not having the cognitive ability that she us.
