Alice is insecure and feels like she is not capable of accomplishing the tasks and duties she is expected to. Alice meets a man called Mad Hatter and while she has tea with him he teaches her about the Red Queen and her plans of devastating Wonderland. He tells Alice to kill the monster, the Jabberwocky and protect Wonderland from the evil Red Queen.

The fantasy is about Buttercup, a milkmaid, and Westley, a farm boy, who fall in love and have to face many obstacles. The story mainly develops the themes of true love and revenge. Every director utilize cinematic techniques to create and add mood and tone to their films. Tim Burton is known for making gothic and fantasy films with various techniques. His imaginations and experiences led to the creativeness of his art. Many individuals would instantly distinguish a film directed by Burton just by pointing out the characteristics of the movie. Tim Burton is famous for his unique cinematic style in films such as Edward Scissorhands, and his renditions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland. In these three films, I will focus on the extreme contrast between the settings, and what that leads the viewer to assume as they watch the movie. Many elements in his films are deceiving at a first glance, but once you get another perspective, their true natures are revealed. Over the past century, film has served as a powerful means of communication to a global audience and has become a vital part of the contemporary culture in a world that is increasingly saturated by visual content. Due to the immediacy and the all-encompassing nature of film, the process of watching a film, is widely perceived to be a passive activity by the general masses. However, quoting Smith in his article about the study of film, “nothing could be further from the truth.” The study and understanding of film as an art form enhances the way we watch and appreciate films. It requires the audience's active participation and interaction with the film in order to fully comprehend the directors' intention behind every creative decision.
Tim Burton has directed at least 36 movies in his lifetime, so far. For our study of his style, we choose two of his more well known movies, Edward Scissorhands and Alice in Wonderland. While watching these movies we discovered a lot about Tim Burton 's writing style. Tim Burton 's style is odd, mysterious, and malleable which he displays using types of sound, color saturation, and camera movement. Tim Burton’s use of non-diegetic sound in movies greatly contributes to his overall tone and mood.
