Many of the soldiers are killed during wartime, so new recruits are replaced. When Paul and his friends are brought to the front again, they experience bombardment from the French enemies. The story includes some gory war details of shelling and firing. For example, “It is just as much a matter of chance that I am still alive as that I might have been hit. In a bombproof dug-out I may be smashed to atoms and in the open may survive ten hours' bombardment unscathed. No soldier outlives a thousand chances. But every soldier believes in Chance and trusts his luck”(Ch.6). At the bombardment, a companion of Paul’s named Haie Westhus dies after being hit on the back. All Quiet on the Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque is a story of a young man named Paul Bäumer who volunteers to be a soldier in the German army during World War One. Being at a very young age Bäumer, and three of his friends whom also enlisted to the German army from the same school he attended, felt proud when enlisting “we were a class of twenty young men, many of whom proudly shaved for the first time before going to the barracks” (AQOTWF p.21). Very soon, however, Bäumer and the young men he enlisted with begin to feel indifferent and embittered of being in the army “At first astonished, then embittered, and finally indifferent.” (AQOTWF p.21/22). Joining the army for Bäumer changed the way he felt about everything he knew in the past, and the way he thought of the people who stayed back home.
On the other hand, William Pfeiler writes that the novel should not be taken seriously because it is about a certain type of naive soldier that does not represent an everyman. Although there is evidence in the novel to support both views, the idea that Paul represents a lost generation is stronger than the opinion that he represents an immature individual. Like the critic Pfeiler claims, All Quiet on the Western Front can be seen as a unique biography about one man, Paul Bäumer, who is changed by the horrors of war and the experiences that come along with it. Before going to war, Paul is a studious young man that has a close
The soldiers in All Quiet on the Western Front, have experienced many hardships and they are expressed in a way of great horror and violence along with In The Field written by Tim O’Brien, and In Flanders Fields, written by John McCrae. Throughout the novel of All Quiet on the Western Front, which was written by Erich Maria Remarque, there are countless mentions that truly show the true horrors of war. Paul Baumer, the leading protagonist in All Quiet on the Western Front, states his surroundings in a way that entices the reader to his perspective and really coaxes with their mind to induce the harsh surroundings and environments that lie in war. In the beginning of chapter six, Paul and the other soldiers are settled along the front, which for the average person, is enough to scare them to a point where they would not even consider going into warfare because of the horrors that lie within Paul Baumer and the other soldiers.
Throughout the story Paul shows that he cares about his comrades by protecting them from the dangers of war, and he also displays that he will guide them in war. Paul uses his skills of intelligence to guide his team in the trenches and at the front, and he passes on his knowledge and tricks of war to the new recruits. Not many soldiers have all of these qualities, which makes Paul stand out more than his comrades. Even today some men don't express the passion and leadership Paul shows in All Quiet on the Western Front, which brings up the fact that the war needs more men like Paul. To sum up, Paul is an honest and true man who will always be there for his comrades when needed, and he is a man the troops are proud to say is a patriotic
All Quiet on the Western Front tells the story of Paul Baumer, a German young man who is drafted into the army with some of his high school friends. Unfortunately, he and his friends have unrealistic ideas about what they are going to face while serving. The movie shows the tragedy of war through the emotional connection characters have, and focuses on the experiences had by the newly enlisted group of friends. I both enjoyed and did not enjoy the movie All Quiet on the Western Front. The parts that I enjoyed included the detail and historical accuracy which could be lined up with the information we have been learning in class.
Paul Baumer is the main protagonist and narrator of the German war novel All Quiet on the Western Front. Throughout the story, Paul experiences the horrors of World War I, including the many gruesome deaths of his fellow German soldiers. These horrors threaten the humanity that Paul struggles to maintain. Certain events of All Quiet on the Western Front show Paul’s struggle, such as his experience with Russian prisoners, the battle in which he threw grenades at the French, and the quarrel between him and a French soldier who falls into his shell hole. In addition to showing Paul’s struggles, these events prove that the war has not taken his humane personality.
All Quiet on The Western Front, written by Erich Maria Remarque, is a novel composed after World War One to convey the experiences of German soldiers during this horrific time of fighting. He brought to light many important issues that occur during wars. In this book, three horrors of war that had the largest impact were the lack of sanitation in the trenches, the loss of comrades, and the shock that came from unexpected and ongoing shelling. The lack of sanitation in the trenches caused many diseases, infections, and terrible memories to me made.
Only the Militiaman Stanislaus Katczinsky has died.” [291] Kat is one of Paul’s closest comrades and this reaction would normally be surprising but he refuses to let himself feel any emotions. Paul and the young soldiers have become numb to death. The meaning of their lives is shattered and is consumed by war. “We are fleeing.
For so long prior to the war, Paul and his friends from school were told that they are the Iron Youth. They were young and innocent with splendid memories. All to be crushed by the war. ‘’Our early life is cut off the moment we came here. ’’[5]
Paul was a young soldier who did not have much to go back home to besides his family, but many other soldiers had families of their own. We saw Paul go through many challenges if it being watching his friend die, going back home, or killing his enemy. Paul was by his friends side the whole time that he was dieing. Paul friend Kemmerich had got his foot amputated and had died from all the bleeding and pain. In the novel we saw at the hospital how poorly the patients got treated and how quickly they got kicked out.
The aftermath of the horrifying and traumatic events of World War 1, brought a dramatic rise in of pacifist and anti-war literature, including the impactful novel All Quiet on the Western Front, composed by Erich Maria Remarque. Remarque’s personal experiences fighting in the futile battles of World War 1 drove him to portray a realistic perspective of war and serve a voice for the Lost Generation through his novel and make deliberate decisions to portray the betrayal of the older generation forcing innocent boys to engage in atrocities, the immense fear and sadness when losing a comrade, and the major physiological impacts soldiers endure, in order to influence audiences towards pacifism and away from romanticizing war. Born 1898 in Osterburg,
Erich Maria Remarque was a man who had lived through the terrors of war, serving since he was eighteen. His first-hand experience shines through the text in his famous war novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, which tells the life of young Paul Bäumer as he serves during World War 1. The book was, and still is, praised to be universal. The blatant show of brutality, and the characters’ questioning of politics and their own self often reaches into the hearts of the readers, regardless of who or where they are. Brutality and images of war are abundant in this book, giving the story a feeling of reality.
