25 April 2023 All the Ways the Most Common Bit of Climate Misinformation is Wrong Climate change is caused by the combination of natural and human factors, but the overwhelming scientific consensus is that human activity is the primary driver of the current rapid warming trend. Howard Lee's article, “All the ways the most common bit of climate misinformation is wrong”, uses tone, sentence structure, and repetition to sway the opinion of the reader. Lee uses vivid words and startling statistics to describe each sub-point of his article, that natural events aren’t to blame for climate change, but the consequences of mankind's actions.
The sentence structure of Lee’s article flows well with the integration

“But silicate weathering is much too slow to make a difference in our time. It’s like an ant eating an elephant: it will get there eventually, but at the slow pace of plate tectonics—in hundreds of thousands of years”(Lee). He uses the clever analogy of an ant eating an elephant to describe the effects of silicate weathering, allowing the reader to analyze the information and put the events into contrast. “It’s not the sun, it’s not natural variation, it’s not volcanos, it’s not earth's orbit, and it’s not plate tectonics”(Lee). Lee starts each sub-point of his article with “It’s not” to start repetition which provides magnitude and structure to his material.
Lee also uses certain wording and tone in his text to convey the magnitude of not only climate change, but why humans are the cause. “The current rate and magnitude of warming are unprecedented and are largely linked to human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and land-use changes”(Lee). Lee gives examples of the human factors in the cause of climate change and his wording in this sentence gives the reader a sense of humility that their own actions have led to this global
Later on in the article it states, “On Earth, human activities are changing the natural greenhouse.” By this statement Nasa’s quote can be seen to inform the average viewer that the “greenhouse effect” responsible for the sudden change in climate, which can all be traced to humanity. After the statement of both
Kevin Williamson writes in his essay “Apocalypse Soonish: The End Times Roll On” regarding the controversial discussion of climate change and humanity's’ love for apocalyptic drama. Williamson is an excellent writer who knows how to engage the reader with humor and wry comparisons as well as point out some obvious trends that show how dramatic some people can be regarding apocalyptic scenarios. However, his frequent disregard for the consequences of the warming's effects, inability to keep a concise argument and tone, and the recurrent misinterpretation of scientific findings, makes his paper difficult to take seriously. In “Apocalypse Soonish” Williamson compares previous hypotheses and estimations of the earth’s future to current studies
But we have satellites keeping a close eye on the sun, and it has not changed nearly enough to be the culprit.” The strategy he goes with is taking the other side and immediately denies it with facts that benefits his point more than the opposing one. Although, Cynthia Tucker’s “Climate Change Looms More Terrifying Than Any Fiction” uses a bunch of stellar evidence, like “A 10-year-old boy visiting from Missouri with his family was killed in a freak accident on an Alabama beach in June when he was struck by a log that had been thrown ashore by a storm surge. ” There seems to be a lack of counter arguments that could’ve boosted her evidence even more and propel her work to greatness.
These articles help with building the picture that climate change is agreed upon everyone that it is an urgent and real thing is in of
Our Earth being both a place of sustenance and shelter is the only place that humans can survive as of right now. Although the discovery of survival might be possible in other planets in the future, the planet of our home is decomposing and transforming into a planet that no organism can survive. The natural order of things in an ecosystem is solely dependent on whether we create a disturbance that can penetrate earth’s shields. In “The World’s Hot Spot” by Thomas L. Friedman, an opinion columnist for the New York Times, suggests that we take a look at nature before it gets extreme and save our personal issues for later. In the article, the use of tone, diction, evidence, and vivid imagery were integrated to clearly portray the current situation of what mother nature is causing as consequences of the problems we create and our least concern in finding a solution.
When dealing with the facts of life, many people like to be lied to because they believe that it would lessen the hopeless feeling the news would bring. However, when dealing with issues such as global warming and pollution, the matter should be dealt with in the strictest and most truthful manner due to the severity of the issue. Many authors have published fictional books about events that may happen if humans do not change their ways, however, it heavily relies on the reader’s emotion to empathize with the main character and some events that occur is speculative. When it comes to non-fiction pieces about global warming, like in the article like “Coming Home,” by Roy Scranton, this article is rooted in statics and real life events and are
McKibben takes a more mathematical approach to make sense of how much trouble the planet and humans as a whole are in if nothing is done about it. Newell takes a more societal perspective by highlighting how people with intersecting identities are mostly impacted and how agrarian change will provide a much larger struggle. These two readings relate to material covered in lecture about adaptability. Due to the current rate of climate change and political inaction by discounting the future, humans are left with no choice but to adapt to the temperature changes. Professor Clemencon has stated that with high temperatures, more people will become sick or forced to migrate, but ultimately, the poor are the most disadvantaged by the wealthy who are causing the worsening of climate change, and in result, the worsening of social inequalities.
Almost anyone who will read this essay has undoubtedly heard of the climate phenomenon Global warming. Global warming is a topic that gets discussed very often nowadays, most notably during political debate and discussion. Politicians use certain stances on global warming to appeal to voter’s emotions and logic in order to gain votes and support for their campaign, however climate change is nothing new, during the past several hundred thousand years the Earth has heated up and cooled down and even experienced so called “ice ages”, which is a period where glacial deposits located at the northern and southern hemispheres have grown due to dramatic global cool downs. Don’t be confused by climate terminology though, the global warming so widely
Annotated Bibliography: How Climate Change Is Affecting Our Planet Controversy statement: Climate change is been debated for over centuries now. People all around the world are taking action and reducing burning fossils to minimize the gasses in the atmosphere. Many people believe that climate change doesn't exists. But there are a lot of controversial topics that proves that climate change is real. In my opinion, climate change is slowly killing us and destroying our planet.
In the article ‘Why Bother?’ Michael Pollan, a Professor of Journalism at the University of California, examines the dangers of climate change and how ordinary citizens can reduce its effects on the environment. Although most scientists are concerned and have warned nations of its disastrous effects some still deny the existence of climate change. As if melting ice caps and the ever-increasing blue waters were not enough proof, some citizens believe that climate change is an “unproven theory or a negligible contribution to natural climate variability” (Hall 3). Nevertheless, citizens who believe in global warning can change how they live for the better.
Nancy Lord’s Early Warming and Elizabeth Kolbert’s “The Darkening Sea” both discuss how global warming is affecting the world. Lord and Kolbert talk about the negative result of climate change and try to raise awareness to global warming. Both Lord’s Early Warming and Kolbert’s “The Darkening Sea” use many different kinds of rhetorical strategies throughout their text. In Lord’s Early Warming, Lords relates to the community about climate change and tells stories about how global warming has affected many people around us.
Many people have advocated for changes in our policies towards nature as they understand that our surrounding environment is constantly under human abuse. Yet many also deny that our actions have any substantial negative effect, such as those who deny the existence of global warming. However, I believe that our actions have severe impacts on the environment around us and I intend to research studies revealing the various consequences of human activity. In Annie Dillard’s
B. Thesis: The causes of global warming and climate change are because of increased emissions of greenhouse gases, and the effects of this are rising temperatures and more severe natural disasters. II. Body A. Counter Claim: Most scientist and people believe that humans are the cause of global warming because of the emissions that they put into the air, but there is a small percentage of people who think that global warming is not caused by emissions at all.
