This article examines the background of the Allied Bombing of Dresden. In 1945, the “Big Three” Allied leaders made up of U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin decided to make a move to end the Nazis once and for all. During the final months of World War II, British bombers dropped many lethal and toxic bombs from February 13 to February 15. Dresden’s air defenses were easily subdued because Hitler had moved most of remaining forces to Berlin. However, the bombing was controversial due to the fact that Dresden didn’t contribute much to the war effort. Thousands of civilians and refugees were killed. Although the Allies say it was to prevent any communication that would hinder the Soviet …show more content…
Dresden was a city that was untouched by the drastic effects of war until February 13, 1945. The city was left with the rubble of its once beautiful historic buildings and the deaths of thousands of civilians. Head of bomber command, Arthur Harris, states three reasons as to why Dresden was chosen for an attack by the Allies. One reason was the fact that Dresden was located in Nazi Germany. Therefore, it was a reasonable target since the Allies were at war against the Nazis. Another reason was that Dresden was not only a place of history, but also full of factories mass-producing weapons and supplies for the Nazis to fight against the Allies. Lastly, the bombing was to show and warn Russia that the Allies are not a force to be reckoned with because both Churchill and Roosevelt knew that Stalin would be a problem in the future. Between the devastating days from February 13 to February 15, there were three waves of attacks. This means that 3,000 tons of bombs were dropped on the city’s cultural structures and its
Their cities were being bombed and they were surrounded at all sides. What was considered the worst part of the whole matter was the fact that instead of dropping the atomic bombs on military bases, they were dropped on cities, and in turn, civilians. It heavily frowned upon in war to target civilians and is considered unethical and immoral to target innocent
This was one of the major reasons for more American material support being sent to Britain in 1941. On the side of the Nazis, they had thoguht that the bombing of London would be good for their image, after they managed to re secure Berlin, However, the luftwaffa was never able to completly protect Germany from the RAF. This
For instance, getting there would be a struggle because they had to travel overseas to get there. In addition, in 1945 Japan was approximately 1,984,000 km squared (OI/nationalww2museum.org). Traveling this far across Japan could lead to the loss of many soldiers. Therefore, the bombs were immense necessities to save American
Out of the two world wars, World War II is known to be the bloodiest and brutal war. The main reason this is to believed is because to the Holocaust. The Holocaust was the time period where many were persecuted for their beliefs and race. Hitler is who is to blame for the Holocaust, he is the one who organized all the horrific things done to the people who did not fall under his Master Race. Despite the many theories about the purpose of the Holocaust, the real purpose make those who weren’t members of the Master Race fear the Nazi Regime, to force them to obey the Nazi’s without question.
It was his idea of the best option instead of fighting a long war. Soldiers who had fought in the war in Europe were tired of fighting. They wanted to go home so when the bomb dropped they saw it as a way of being free of a war (Document 5). Which in their case is true they can go home to their families and loved ones, but what about those in Hiroshima or Nagasaki?
was right in dropping the bomb is because if we didn’t, then we had the possibility of losing supplies. If we were to fight on the front then we would have to supply our men with weapons, food, and clothing, making it hard to keep supplies in stock for the people back home. Paul Fussell states, “The people who preferred invasion to A-Bombing seemed to have no intention of proceeding to the Japanese front themselves”. This quote shows that people didn’t want to fight on the front so it would be a waste of our supplies that we could use for something else. And one of the most important reasons of why we would’ve run out of supplies is because trade was slow and not many countries wanted to trade so we wouldn’t have sufficient supplies.
Winston Churchill said that the atomic bombs saved 1,200,000 allied lives. After President Truman’s book came out it said that half a million American lives were saved. World War II was very bloody, especially in the islands. In February and March of 1945, there was a battle of Iwo Jima 80,000 Americans fought and 6,281 were killed and 19,000 were injured. Military planners estimated that at
Because of the attack Americans not wanting to be involved in the Second World War unified to end the U.S. neutrality, but some were not happy about this and others were saddened and stunned by this. Because of the declaration of war, many children had to undertake bombing drills at school while some thought they were fun, others were frightened by this because they didn't know when and where the next bomb if any was coming next. (Reef, 2015)
These soldiers are fatigued and wanted the war to end, they did not want to fight anymore. With the atomic bomb it helped them, it ended the war. The bomb even ended the war quickly after the two bombs were launched at Japan. This bombing made it justified by the quick end to the war because we helped those soldiers who were hoping to go home from the first place after the battle against Germany. Besides other people wanted that war to end as well.
The Allied victory in 1945 was not a sure thing. In early 1942, Germany controlled most of continental Europe and its resources. The Third Reich was in full expansion. The Soviet Union was in vast part occupied, and was risking the annihilation. The United States were not adequately armed for war.
The enemy was set on destroying the other sides’ economic resources. The allies bombed Munich was to strike fear into the hearts of the Germans. The allies used this tactic throughout World War 2. This tactic would later be known as “terror bombing”. They also did this was to tear the Germans apart physically and mentally.
The Bombing of Hiroshima is a major and important historical event in world war 2, that changed the course of history and forced an end to the war. The bombing was on the 6th of August 1945 in Hiroshima, Japan. The bomb named “little boy” was dropped by the United States Air Force overtop of one of the highest populated areas in Japan at the time. This Uranium bomb caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and devastation to the Japanese people. This essay is going into depth about the causes and consequences of this significant historical event.
And because whenever the bomb went off the people
Slaughterhouse-Five focuses on several worldly tragedies and international events. The Dresden and Hiroshima bombings are specifically mentioned multiple times. However, it lacks the depth that would come with the addition of the oppressed groups’ point of views. The missing viewpoint is highlighted when it states, “Sixteen hours ago an American airplane dropped one bomb on Hiroshima, an important Japanese Army base” (185). The atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima would be told in a much different way from the Japanese perspective.
The dropping of the atomic bombs on World War II on the city of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a very important part of World War II. The atomic bomb ended the war between America and Japan. This was just one of the important events during the battle in World War II. The Battle at Pearl Harbor, where the Japanese attacked U.S. soil was also why the americans bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Some believe that the United States was correct in dropping these bombs on Japan because of the attack on Pearl Harbor while others believe that it was very wrong to dropped the bomb.
