President Lincoln wanted to get slavery out of the states. Angry and unwilling to accept Lincoln’s proposal, seven southern confederate states withdrew from the rest of the country and made the Confederate States of America. With tensions rising and neither side willing to back down, a war broke out in the nation. This war was a brutal and bloody war, in some cases families would fight families over their disagreement in whether African Americans should
Ryan Nielsen 9/18/15 S.S.-2nd /Eng.-3rd DBQ:Reconstruction Who Killed Reconstruction North or South The Reconstion was killed but by who the North neglection or the South resistance and why? Reconstruction was in process because of the war. The Civil war destroyed much of the south. In many groups it was not wanted such as the KKK. The KKK was a group against equal rights throughout African Americans.
In the war they friends were killing their friends because it was against the North and the South. The flag secede from the United States. In 1860-61 about eleven states seceded for protect institution of slavery. Which it wasn’t even about slavery in the first place, they just think that. They just think that because blacks thinks that white people use that flag to show sleevey but they don’t.
Slavery was an extremely prominent and debated issue in the late 1800’s that ended up dividing the United States in half. There were the Northerners who opposed the institution of slavery and the Southerners who gave it their support. The controversy over the use of slavery had been an issue between the North and South for a long time but it became even more evident during the election of 1860. Abraham Lincoln ran in the Republican Party a group who had devoted itself to keeping slavery out of the new territories as the country expanded westward. The south feared abolitionists would use violence in order to deprive the south of slave property.
The Reconstruction failed when the states adopted the Black Codes. According to William Hoar about the Black Codes, “In an attempt to bring order, a number of states legally adopted Black Codes prohibiting the often uneducated and illiterate Blacks from sitting on juries, carrying weapons, committing adultery, being vagrants, and violating curfew and segregation laws”. John Alexander Carroll and Odie B. Faulk in Home of the Brave, “That blacks had to have a steady occupation and they carried heavy penalties for violations of labor contracts.” Eventually the codes effectively made racism legal (Hoar). The next misstep of the Reconstruction was the Ku Klux Klan. The Black Code gave the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan more aim and opportunity to
Pro and anti-slavery groups became increasingly violent until the conflict was known throughout the country as Bleeding Kansas. John Brown, one of the fiercest anti-slavery militants in the conflict, tried to bring one of the southern states’ worst fears to fruition when he seized control of an arsenal in Harper’s Ferry, Virginia with the intent of inciting a slave rebellion in the southern heartland. He was ultimately unsuccessful, but his actions in 1859 caused many southerners to believe that the union could no longer
Slavery had divided the United States from the beginning. Having slaves mostly in the south and President Lincoln favoring the fact we shouldn 't have slaves, this really angered southerners (which resulted in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln), The American Civil War was the largest and most destructive fight in the Western world and it all started with the Confederate Army (the South) claiming Fort Sumter as their own. They open fired on the federal garrison and forced
The South used African Americans to do there dirty work, they beat them and sold them to other “white folk”. African Americans didn 't have many right if they had any. another reason the civil war started is because the North thought that once you was in the army you couldn 't leave the army. But the South thought that it should be like the American revolution. in 1861 on April 12 at 4:30 a.m the South “ The confederate army” fired upon Fort Sumter.
Political parties were divided and created. Both settlers and congressmen were experiencing violence and tension that was caused by the divisive politics of slavery. Finally, the South seceded, feeling like they’ve lost their voice in the federal government with Lincoln’s election. Overall, the issue of slavery and failure to compromise made every American at the time felt like they were discriminated against or ignored. The Civil War broke out as a result of their struggle for their own
The Civil War began over the South wanting to withdraw from the North or the Union. The South and North were having several issues with each other and the biggest was slavery and new land ownership. Let’s all be clear on this issue, slavery anywhere in the world, is wrong period, no exceptions and no excuses. But if we look at slavery in early America, we learned that the North and South was the same on the issue, and that issue was racism. There were some northerners that had no issue with slavery, and some southerners had issues with slavery.
This established a base that made “…it illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, but there was a national backlash…[which] led to the Supreme Court’s nullification of the Civil Rights Act in 1883.” Because of the nullification, throughout the years to come blacks were being torn down and positions that they acquired before were being taken from them. In the year of 1901 a colored representative who was in Congress was fired. It’s not till 30 years later when “a black person could gain a seat in the House or Senate.” Many of what was going on was because of the South being so involved with slaves they didn 't want those rights and beliefs taken from them. Also, many didn 't want black people to have the same rights as
The Civil War was the war that tore the united states apart. Most people assume the war was fought only about slavery. But the war was fought for many more reasons. The north, known as the Yankees, or the union. Wanted to abolish slavery, decreases the economy difference in the southern farms and better state and equal rights.
