Among the several biotic limiting factors for sunflower production, Alternaria leaf blight is a potential destructive foliar disease of sunflower in India and elsewhere causing significant yield losses during rainy season. Three CMS lines were crossed with fourteen testers in an L x T mating design and derived forty two experimental hybrids which were evaluated under natural epiphytotic conditions. The disease incidence was assessed based on PDI which was taken on the basis of 0 to 9 scale of Mayee and Datar at three stages i.e., at 45 (star bud), 60 (peak flowering) and at 75 (seed filling) DAS. The results indicated none of the genotypes found to be immune and highly resistant reaction, but experimental hybrids, CMS 853A x DSR-90, CMS 853A …show more content…
It is known to cause reduction in flower size, number of seeds per head, seed yield per plant, seed weight and oil content (Balasubrahmanyam and Kolte, 1980a & b). In Northern Karnataka, Alternaria leaf blight is known to cause more than 80 per cent of the yield loss under severe epiphytotic conditions (Hiremath et al., 1990). There is no resistant source identified for Alternaria disease so far and no hybrid is released for Alternaria resistance. Breeding for resistance to Alternaria leaf spot faces the challenge of a gene pool containing only moderate levels of resistance. There is a strong need to screen the genotypes against Alternaria isolates of this geographical region and identify potential hybrid with genes for resistance or tolerance to Alternaria helianthi.
In the present study attempts were made to evaluate the experimental hybrids along with their parents for their reaction to Alternaria leaf spot under natural epiphytotic

Lizbeth's family is poor and struggling to make ends meet, which causes her to feel frustrated and powerless.
