Alzheimer was distinguished in 1907 but not considered to be a big thing until year 1970s. During this year researchers named this disease after Dr. Alzheimer. Dr. Alzheimer was the first person that matches the symptoms with plaques and tangles. Even though Alzheimer’s disease was discovered from senility and dementia, the government did not approve research funding, instead it was supported by the families who suffered from Alzheimer 's. In 1979, the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, Inc was formed and was renamed later on as Alzheimer’s Association. This association was build by five Alzheimer 's family support groups across the United States along with the National institutes of Health. In 1970s, scientist …show more content…
Chad Dickey, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Molecular Medicine, University of South Florida. Recipient of a 2006 New Investigator Research Grant. Dickey researched is about human tau and how it actually affects our brain. On his experiment with the mice, he found out that the younger mice are capable of clearing tau while older are unable. Tau proteins are proteins that perform the function of stabilizing microtubules. A damaged tau can lead to Alzheimer’s disease. Dickey’s theory indicated that methylene blue and derivative azure C can lower tau levels in brain of the mice which shows improvement of memory function. In addition to his research, methylene blue reduces tau levels by preventing a heat shock protein called Hsp70. Hsp70 activators significantly increased tau levels and the breakdown of tau is rapidly promoted when Hsp70 is repressed by methylene blue. The Hsp70 activity prevents the degradation of tau and can indicate the importance and beneficial target for Alzheimer’s. Giulio Tagliatatela, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Texas Medical Branch, recipient of a 2008 Investigator Initiated Research Grant. Giulio researched the role of beta-amyloid. It was discovered that the number of amyloid plaques on autopsy in individuals with Alzheimer’s did not associates with the disease …show more content…
Although there are no current medications that can cure Alzheimer’s there are some medications that is FDA approved to help the progression effects of this disease. Cholinesterase inhibitors such as Donepezil (Aricept) is approved to treat all stages of Alzheimer’s. Rivastigmine (Exelon) and Galantamine (Razadyne) are approved to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer’s. These medicines can prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine which is the chemical messenger important for learning and other thought processes. This can also delay worsening up to six to twelve months. Memantine is another medicine approved by FDA for moderate to severe Alzheimer’s. This meds regulates activity of glutamate. Some doctors prescribe vitamin E and also knowns as alpha tocopherol or antioxidant. Antioxidant protect brain cells and other body tissues from certain kinds of chemical wear and
In Tiana Peele’s “Alzheimer’s: The Forgotten Issue” published by the University of Delaware Peele attempts to raise awareness of the forgotten issue of Alzheimer’s. Undoubtedly, Peele is drawn to this subject at matter because her grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This disease happens to be a form of Dementia and causes memory and intellectual abilities to deteriorate. Some of the early symptoms include short-term memory loss, and behavior changes. Furthermore, as one progresses into the later stages of this disease they become increasingly confused and become suspicious of loved ones.
It provides the opportunity for prompt evaluation of the patient and possibly administer tests and treatments for reversing and determining the causes of memory loss. In addition, early diagnosis provides time for patients and families to prepare for the future and most importantly it maximizes the patients opportunity to contribute to their own care planning process. As previously stated, the diagnosis of dementia most commonly takes place in the primary care setting. During primary care visits with older or elderly people the interactions tend to be brief and patients often present multiple health conditions that they are experiencing. It can be challenging for the physician to pin point those intersecting health concerns with Alzheimer’s if they are not properly trained to do so.
Villegas Although it was not that long ago that I started doing research, Dr. Villegas has given me the privilege of working in his lab. He is currently conducting research on a rat model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Working with Dr. Villegas has allowed me to learn new scientific methods and facts. Such methods and facts include, but are not limited to, tissue sectioning, electrode implantation, and recording data.
Alzheimer’s disease is a specific cognitive impairment that falls under the dementia umbrella. Currently there is no cure and researchers are still looking to find the cause for diseases like Alzheimer’s. It is important, as the baby-boomer generation ages, to make sure the general public is educated on common myths and misconceptions about dementia. 1.
Dementia History Dementia is a disease that brings grief to a family if it is not handled correctly. This disease gradually begins and worsens the cognitive ability over several years. In the dawn of nineteenth century, dementia was just a clinical concept. The doctors believed that dementia in aged people fluctuated within the idea that was due to the blockage in the major arteries in the brain or small strokes inside the vessels of the cerebral cortex. Recently they believe that the dementia is caused due to the mixture of both conditions.
Alzheimer’s disease, the most common type of dementia, results in damage to the brain. Alzheimer’s disease affects over five million people and is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. A brain of a person with Alzheimer’s disease will have fewer neural cells and connections between those cells than a person without Alzheimer’s will, resulting in decreased memory and a decline in cognitive abilities. This type of damage can be better understood and possibly prevented through the implementation of the appropriate drugs by examining the roles of differing types of chemical bonds in Alzheimer’s disease. Proteins, which are the building blocks of all organisms and are responsible for multiple cellular functions, can only accomplish
Alzheimer’s is not a reversible disease. Some people with dementia may only have it from medication side effects, car accidents etc. Alzheimer’s patients are different as they have impaired thought, speech, confusion, and some patients who are in the late stage even lose the ability to talk and swallow. There are 3 stages to this disease progression (ref.1): early, middle, and late. The early stage is when most people confuse basic dementia with Alzheimer’s.
The first most common type of Dementia we are going to talk about is Alzheimer’s. 1. According to the CDC article about
The Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation (LIAF) is a social model day program for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other related memory disorders to help improve their quality of life. LIAF is located in Port Washington, NY and offers services to treat individuals with early, moderate and late stage Alzheimer’s. The agency population is comprised of male and female participates with ages ranging from mid-fifties to late-nineties who all suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. LIAF biopsychosocial are done during a client’s initial intake and reviews are conducted quarterly by a Social Worker.
Several medical interventions have benefited the patients very little and are prolonging their suffering. Although heroic measures could save people from death, the patients’ suffering with Alzheimer’s still continues. Heroic measures might help in the meantime, but cannot change the patient 's fate with this incurable disease. Alzheimer’s disease slowly drains the quality of life of the patient.
End They shape their argument in the end by saying how the government does not put nearly as much money as they do towards other diseases and that there is a possible cure in testing. “In March, biotechnology company Biogen unveiled an anti-amyloid called aducanumab, or "adu" — the first drug that has substantially reduced the brain plaque associated with Alzheimer 's in a human trial”. 4. The author uses a serious tone by giving facts that portray the need for a cure.
Introduction Alzheimer’s is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and gets worse over time. The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events or short memory loss. As the disease advances, symptoms can include difficulty with language, disorientation, mood swing and behavior problems. As a person 's condition progressed, they often withdraw from friends and family. Slowly, bodily functions deteriorated and eventually death occurs.
The Alzheimer`s disease was discovered in 1906 by Dr. Alois Alzheimer. In 1901, Dr. Alzheimer had a patient named Auguste Deter who experienced memory loss, paranoia, and psychological changes. Dr. Alzheimers recorded in Auguste`s
Dementia is one of the most feared diseases and expensive to society currently. It is defined as a clinical syndrome of acquired cognitive impairment that determines decrease of intellectual enough capacity to interfere social and functional performance of the individual and their quality of life. It is a known fact that patients tend to express themselves through their behaviour and expect their carers to understand this notion. The diverse kinds of causes of different behaviours are inability to communicate, difficulty with tasks, unfamiliar surroundings, loud noises, frantic environment, and physical discomfort. Many diseases can cause dementia, some of which may be reversible.
Fish Oil Fish oil supplements have been discovered to enhance memory and decrease psychological declination, on account of the large amounts of omega-3 unsaturated fats. Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) found in fish oil may also keep the development of brain plaques connected to Alzheimer's infection. Ingest fish oil supplements, containing no less than six hundred mg DHA, every day. For a proper and appropriate dose, counsel your specialist.
