Amendment I: Freedom of Religion “It’s the duty of everyone to defend religious freedom and promote it for all the people.” -Pope Francis. The First Amendment has been the foundation of our country for generations and it has acknowledged that the citizens of America will have personal freedoms such as freedom of religion, freedom of free expression, freedom of assembly, and freedom of the press. Religious tolerance has given us American citizens the right to practice what you believe. Meaning and Purpose of Religious Liberty
The struggle for religious liberty has been going on for centuries until the ratification of the First Amendment. In America, the First Amendment enables us to express our own beliefs freely. According to an article

It is also important for public schools to respect everyone's religious beliefs and to not promote any particular religion. People are usually in concern of having students practicing their own religion at school. There has been many cases brought to the Supreme Court involving the issue of the right of students to pray in schools. Not having a moment of silence to pray in public schools would violate the principles the the First Amendment and are said by the Supreme Court to be unconstitutional. According to an article online called Can You Do That in School?- Separation of Church and State, it states that “When educators are in the public schools, they are wearing their government hats. They cannot establish or encourage religion in the classroom.” Even though teachers and administrators cannot promote religion in school, they are still allowed to teach the cultural and historical value of a certain religion. According to another article online called, Prayer And the Public Schools Religion, Education, & Your Rights, it has noted that “Students are allowed to read their Bibles during silent reading periods in class or pray in the halls or over their meals in the cafeteria.” Furthermore, schools do allow teachers and administrators to teach the diverse culture of a religion, and they also allow students to practice their religion …show more content…
According to an article called ACLJ Files Lawsuit Against CA School District on Behalf of Christian Youth Club, it has stated that “Orange County’s Buena Park School District unconstitutionally rejected a Christian youth club’s request to meet in District facilities on equal grounds with similar, nonprofit, nonreligious youth organizations.” The “Good News Club” is a group of a Bible-centered organization where school kids with extracurricular educational programming and recreational activities that teach about life from a biblical perspective. But, the youth club was denied the request to use district facilities free of charge even though the California Education Code allows non-profit youth oriented group to use public facilities with no cost. From the article it also states that, “Freedom doesn’t stop at the schoolhouse door. Child Evangelism Fellowship has every right to equal treatment and access to public school facilities for its after-school events.” With ACLJ's lawsuit, it has remarked that the Buena Park School District has violated the First Amendment on free practice of
Article I of the Amendments to the Constitution states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” This amendment can be broken down into two parts: freedom of religion and freedom of speech. Many of the first settlers in America migrated for the purpose of living somewhere where they could practice their religion, which was not allowed in their home country. It was one of the aspects that originally set America apart from the other nations of the world. While countless other countries now allow freedom of religion, this continues to be an essential part of America’s identity.
I believe that the freedom of religion means that we have a right to choose to practice religion as long as we do not infringe the rights on others. The First Amendment prevents the law from interfering with religion. The main powers of the government are prohibited from intentionally interfering with the freedom of individuals to practice their religion. So basically this means that any practices that is considered sacred to religions can be protected. And when the time came of the law of free exercise principle came about was when the argument of it being used as excuses to the
In which Fraser gave an inappropriate speech which contained perverted and inferred sexual words in his speech to try an get one of his friends into office, but got suspended and was no longer allowed to speak at graduation. According to document E it says “Bethel school district acted within its permissible authority in imposing sanctions on Fraser after his inappropriate speech”. This quote shows students are limited to what they can say and can't really speak their minds without restrictions therefore this shows that this case restricts the 1st amendment rights of students even though the U.S promotes freedom of speech but nevertheless there are others way to speak without using indecent words and also it was within a place of learning. The court was right to decide in favor of the school because “A high school assembly or classroom is no place for a sexuality explict monologue.(Doc. E)”it was well within parameters of the school to punish him for using obscene and indecent speech at a school event as mentioned in document E earlier “The first Amendment does not prevent the schools officials from determining them to permit a vulgar and lewd speech such as the respondent's would undermine the school’s basic educational
The school board did violate the Establishment Clause by requiring their impressionable student council members to attend biased school-sponsored board meetings that begun with Christian prayer. The overarching rule of the Establishment Clause states that, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Marsh v. Chambers, 463 U.S. 783, 790, S.Ct. 330,77 L.Ed.2d 1019 (1983). This clause intends to keep the church and the state separate of each other.
The Importance of the 1st Amendment In 1787 our founding fathers assembled the constitution of the United States of America. Of this which contains the most important document to the American citizen, the Bill of rights. The first Amendment states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances” These freedoms granted by the Bill of Rights are often known as freedom of expression. These rights are most important to a truly free society. The first amendment provides us with new ideas and dismisses the fear of punishment
I also find this liberty extremely important because spirituality and religion is something very important and personal, and everyone should have the freedom to choose any religion they please, or none at all. Everyone should be entitled to their own beliefs and practices as long as they are not hurting anyone else, so it is immensely important to have legislation in place protecting the citizens’ right to choose a path for themselves. It is hard to believe that what I
To me, the schools in the United States should be allowed to have prayer in school because; morals should be taught, to restore Christianity, and to give the students the opportunity to express their feelings. Since prayer was removed from schools, there has been a drastic change with society. According to David Barton, ever since prayer was removed from schools teen pregnancies have gone up 500% since 1962. The effect of the removal of prayer has not only effected that, but the number of unmarried mothers have risen dramatically.
At the end of the day, no school or church will jeopardize one’s faith. The only person who can is that person. My Christian worldview on education is that the word of God can be expressed whatever institution a child goes too. Kids might not get the chance to go to a Christian school because it's too expensive. That doesn’t mean their faith isn’t important to them.
A recent study said more than two thirds of americans agree with the notion that “liberals have gone too far in trying to keep religion out of the schools and the government” (Rosentiel). Religion is a belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power. Having religion in schools is a big controversy because religious people want prayer in school and non religious people do not want prayer in schools. Religion is a big topic to talk about but especially in schools. The controversial idea of praying in schools is detrimental to the school environment because it could cause arguments, it would have to be inclusive to all religions, and it would not consider the interests of non-religious students.
Do not take time away from my limited learning time so that you can pray as a class. If prayer was allowed in public schools it could cause kids of different religions to be made fun of because of what they believe in. Many people can argue that school prayer should be allowed because they have freedom of religion and those who do not want to pray can leave the room while they pray. If you make some students step out while they pray it could cause those student feel insulted and awkward because they were called out
Prayer should be allowed in school because some people who want to go to a religious school cannot because of the cost and some areas do not have religious schools around, people who believe in God or just want to pray have a right to freely pray due to the first amendment which says congress cannot make laws against religious practices, and it is said that prayer is controversial, although some teachings taught in school are extremely controversial, so it would not be fair to rule out prayer because not everyone believes in it. Some people don’t believe in polytheistic teachings, yet it is mentioned in social studies books all around. As you can see, prayer in school would not only benefit individuals but groups of people. Prayer in school helps, and does not hurt. In addition to this if any institution doesn’t allow an individual to pray in the U.S.A, it is unconstitutional and infringes on the right of the
but some stood up and they said "yes I am a Christian. " If they take away God from school than they take away hope for a
Today’s school lacks spirituality and I think religion should be taught in school. Teaching our children about religions may develop moral values and virtues and can be taught like a normal subject in school. Teaching our children can develop moral values and virtues like honesty, empathy and loyalty. I do not think children should just be taught one religion but all the religions around the world. It may be controversial to some parents, but I believe children should learn to respect and socialize with everyone regardless of their religion.
Stacy Lange, 04 Nov. 2016. Web. 02 Dec. 2016. That’s why it is so important to pray before every game . The one and most reason why prayer should be allowed back in public schools is the struggle of classes.
The FFRF also thinks that public schools are for all children, whether they are Catholic, Baptist, Atheist, Buddhist, Agnostic, or Jewish. Therefore public schools should be free of all religious observances and oppression. They also think that it is the duty of parents and churches to teach their children what they believe and anything that doesn’t allow the parents to teach their children takes away the parents God given right to teach their children their beliefs. Does this limit students to much on how they can
