A hero is a person, typically a man, who is loved for courage, outstanding qualities and great achievements. Beowulf displays many characteristics, but he mainly displays strength, bravery, and selflessness. Beowulf ‘s fanatic future's got him through horrifying battles and never got him to give up. Batman has never given up on Gotham city, even when he felt weak or even when other superheroes did not believe in him. Beowulf and Batman are heroes that are very flexible with things and they share the same characteristics.
Captain America is a great example of how Beowulf acts in this short story. In order to be a good epic hero, you need to be strong, ethical, on a quest, and glorified. Captain America represents all of those things just like Beowulf. They have many differences but many of the same traits. I will compare the two and also contrast them.
Many people do not believe heroes still exist, yet they are all around. In all different time periods, people have been searching for a leader. Whether it is an adult, coach, or sibling; the world needs someone to look up to. The Anglo-Saxon epic hero, Beowulf, and the American Soldier, Joseph Beryle, are of examples of heroes that fill the emptiness of those who are lost and seeking leadership. Although Beowulf is a heroic figure that portrays the values of the Anglo-Saxon time, today, American Soldiers like Joseph Beryle still exemplifies the same heroic characteristics; the only difference between them is the time that has passed.
Beowulf is very wise and pure however despite being from different places with different circumstances Beowulf and superman share the same values. This makes Beowulf and Superman proof that superheroes have the same values. Superman and beowulf have the same values we learn in the book that beowulf values being humility, loyalty, and self restraint and in the movie that superman shares the same values. One example of Beowulf showing the value of humility in the book is after he has just completed his great battles against the evil of the land. For example, in the book it states, “Beowulf was not greedy or ambitious.
Beowulf possessed the poised demeanor necessary to defeat all evils by the arrogant swing of his sword. The commitment shown by lending his life to the welfare of his people was imperative in order to be called a flawless warrior. Beowulf embodied the determination that Anglo-Saxons saw as unmeasurably valuable. If nothing more than just fiction, Beowulf is the ideal hero of the people from who he originated. “They said that of all the kings upon the earth he was the man most gracious and fair-minded, kindest to his people and keenest to win fame.”
Throughout the years, Beowulf has been compared to many modern day super heroes. However, the super hero that Beowulf is most easily compared to is Superman. Although there are multiple differences amongst these two characters, there are a few similarities as well. Such similarities exist in appearances, as well as supernatural qualities. Moreover, Beowulf and Superman are both portrayed as heroes for their time.
Christopher Reeve (AKA the 1978 superman) said that, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles”. Both Beowulf and Modern day heroes are similar in that way in that they fight for the common good of people. That quote from Christopher Reeves on what a modern day hero is, also applies to the epic hero qualities that Beowulf has. Similarly Beowulf and a modern day hero defeat an evil so that good can prevail. Some examples are, Beowulf Slaying Grendel and Grendel's mother to save the land of the Danes, and soldiers fighting enemies that threaten the lives of a country, and police officers putting criminals behind bars.
They put their life on the line for the citizens of the United States of America. The final characteristic of a great hero is loyalty. Loyalty is staying true to what you say or say you will do. Beowulf was loyal to the Danes and Geats, when he said he will fight off the enemies he stuck to his word.
Beowulf and Superman are considered epic heroes because of the feats and battles both have conquered, along with the villains and countless evil creatures that have been defeated. Despite being closely similar in the journey each takes and the enemies they vanquish; each is vastly different in certain points of their existence and attitudes. Beowulf and Superman’s differences and similarities start at the beginning of each one’s lives and end at the last moments of their journeys. Superman and Beowulf have both struggled to conquer all foes and enemies and have fought hard for the lives each has lived, or is living, and both have acquired the titles of being an epic hero. There are scenes in both Superman and Beowulf’s quests where they show different attitudes and personalities.
In the beginning, Beowulf was introduced as a young and powerful warrior whose heroism is defined by his great strength.
An Anglo-Saxon Hero Over centuries, there has been a lot over different kind of superheroes that have been created. One of these heroes have been called Beowulf. Although Beowulf doesn’t show much of a Modern Day hero, he shows characteristics of an Anglo-Saxon hero. Beowulf shows Anglo-Saxon characteristics by showing us that he has bravery/courage, that he has loyalty to his lord/Lord, and that he had strength.
Alexander Hamilton once said, “There is a certain Enthusiasm in liberty that makes Human nature rise above itself, in acts of bravery and heroism.” Beowulf is an epic poem in which the main character Beowulf did acts of service, but he fought for those who couldn’t fight. The overall theme of good versus evil in Beowulf had Beowulf dealing with challenges that no ordinary man would be able to handle unless they were a true epic hero. Throughout the poem Beowulf proves to be an epic hero by his strength, bravery, and sacrifice.
The first quality they share is courage. The two heroes demonstrate their courage in a different way. Beowulf is a hero with a lot of courage because he fights without weapons. He does not believe in using weapons to kill people. Beowulf is described as: “Dripped with his enemies blood”.
Beowulf the mightiest hero, he kills demons, fights dragons, and does everything he can for the people, but how does he stack up against today's heroes like Spider Man. Beowulf can kill monsters, demons, and demons mothers, but what about if the circumstances were swapped. What if Beowulf had to fight some of the villains that a hero like Spider Man fights? Would he still be able to boast about taking them on bare handed? Comparing Beowulf to some of the villains of the comics may not make him seem as strong or have as much battle prowess.
The character that Beowulf will be compared to is Batman.. The comic batman is a 1993 American superhero mystery films. Batman is a normal guy. He is like all other humans. In the story batman he owns a company.
