American Dream The American Dream is something people think about over the country. Citizens have an equal opportunity to achieve their dream if they work hard and that American Dream would become a reality. According to some citizens, their dream would consist of a house, an education, and a job. The most important part is just providing some sort of shelter over your family’s head and food on the table so they survive. “The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive, and passion, it’s possible to achieve the American Dream” (Hilfiger). In order to join the military you have to take a test in high school known as ASVAB which stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. This test is a multiple part test used to determine qualification for joining the military. The minimum score you can get is a 31 and that’s for the national guard or the army. For the marine corps, you have to score a minimum of 32, navy is 35, air force is 36, and the coast guard is a minimum of 40. You’ll need a high school diploma, but a GED would also be acceptable if you don’t have it. You must meet the height, weight, physical health requirements and complete the basic training which will last for about 9-10 weeks. The boot camp that you need to go through provides you a place to stay, food and pays you monthly. You won’t have any bills to pay so you’ll be able to save up. There will also be drug tests that you have to take. For example, if you wanted to become a navy officer, you will need at least a bachelor's degree, but only United States citizens are allowed to join. When you retire from the military, you can take college courses if you want to do a certain job afterwards. You can take classes online and you can use your GI Bill that you earned while you served. Every job pays differently, but it mostly depends on what you like. The minimum wage for Connecticut as of 2017 is $10.10 an hour. The last 2 years it has gone up, from being $9.15 in 2015 and $9.60 in 2016. As of October 2017, the unemployment rate is 4.1 which has been decreasing over the years. Most dream jobs people would want would be something that will support the family in financial costs and that might include being a nurse/doctor, in the military, or even owning a business. Most people dream about owning something of their own and it becoming big. If their not looking for anything big then working in a restaurant or at a school would be a good job. If you have kids, working at a school would be a perfect job because you’ll have most of the days off as them and that includes summer. Those would be some examples of good jobs people might want for their dream. The American Dream is a big part of today’s world. Everyone has their own opinions about what the actual definition is. Some don’t believe in getting/earning the American dream while others believe it can happen, but it might just take some time. The American Dream is something people should be excited for in the future. You never know when things can happen. It might take decades to get something you have been dreaming about, but in the end it will make you
