American Indian Myths and Legends The book that I chose was “American Indian Myths and Legends”. This book was selected and edited by Richard Erdoes and Alfonso Ortiz. My book is about the myths and legends of certain tribes around the world; even though they were myths, I was still able to tell a lot about their culture in the context they use in the stories. While reading this book, I realized that our cultures are almost completely different with a few similarities between our two cultures. The first difference, I noticed between our two cultures was are religious beliefs on many different factors. In our culture, the main religion is Christianity, the religion that we believe there is one God and our savior Jesus Christ. While I was reading this book I saw many different religions with many …show more content…
In our culture, we slaughter breed animals and have people buy it from a Market. Also, we grow plants to buy from the market. Then there’s all the processed stuff that we buy from the market. Their culture is based off of hunting and growing their own food. Or the Southern UTE tribe, “Soon Blood Clot needed larger arrows, and with them he began to hunt birds and other small game” (9). As the child grew it says “Blood Clot said, ‘I have killed a big fellow with big antlers.’ It was an elk, so again the family feasted on the meat”(9). The next example of foods is from the Brule Sioux Tribe. This tribe mainly eats off of plants that they are picked by hand. “These were peyote plants guiding her to their hiding places among the thorn bushes and chaparral. So the old woman and the girl picked the herbs and filled the hide bag with them”(67). We can also relate to their foods because a lot of people hunt for their food and grow their own plants to feed their family. We rarely go out to look for herbs, or stuff growing in the wild. I think the best example would be when we try to find asparagus on the side of the
Northwest Coast Indians, one of the richest Indians, were famous in trading sea otter fur with European in less than two hundreds years ago. The story takes place on the Laguna Pueblo Indians Reservation, located in New Mexico. The lives of the Native Americans were underprivileged. It was an undesirable place to live with lack of resources and opportunities for the young men on the reservation. Therefore, some had enlisted to serve the United States military during the time of World War Two. They saw it as an opportunity out of the reservation, believing that they would travel the world (Silko 72), and they were promised by the recruiter that they would “be eligible for everything” (Silko 65).
Farm land was used wisely by the Natives. They planted rows of corn and other edible resources for food. A big dining table is pictured in the middle of a pathway in the center of the Native village that may have been used for special gatherings and meals. A large circle is shown in the middle of the Algonquian village with Natives dancing around it. Secotan may have been located near a body of
The Navajo Origin Legend is basically about how the people treat nature. In the story it says that their Gods came down with sacred buckskins and laid them down with white and yellow corn. Throughout the story the Navajo do their rituals around the two buckskins and later the wind starts to blow and the skins lift and a man and woman are left in place of the two skins. This is symbolizing how important the Navajo see nature and value it. This is also symbolizing why the men and woman dry themselves with white or yellow corn meal stating that the men came from the white corn meal and the women came from the yellow corn meal.
The Other Side of the Sky It’s crazy how different cultures are when we all live on the same planet. It’s also crazy how similar cultures are when we live so far away from others. That is what makes our world and our people so diverse. In The Other Side of the Sky by Farah Ahmedi and Tamim Ansary there were many events that showed great amounts of cultural differences, and similarities.
When the settlers of Europe first came to the new world, they were introduced to the Native Americans. The settlers wanted the Natives to follow their culture and its benefits such as education, religion, and the usage of the environment. The Native Americans refused the request, stating they have their own type of culture, believing it to be the most superior; as a result, the Natives’ statement angered the ethnocentric settlers. Consequently, this caused a conflict between the two groups because of their culture differences. Firstly, the main culture difference consists of religion, tradition, and way of living.

In the Holocaust, millions of people were killed due to their religious beliefs. Millions of others were killed based ethnic background, too. Ethnicity was the main factor and motivation for discrimination in all societies. When a person is discriminated against, especially in situations like the Holocaust, there is little to do to get out of this problem. Social injustice is the ignorance against or mistreatment of a certain group of people.
