In the novel 'To Kill a Mockingbird ', the most paramount out of the large variety of messages proposed by Harper Lee is the ‘Coexistence of good and evil’, which is explored through the narrative conventions, characters and plot. The book is able to approach this statement by using the innocence of Scout and Jem 's childhood, in which they have not yet experienced the truth of the world. They are shown to assume that good people are good since they have never witnessed evil, and as soon as they have experienced it, they 're completely vulnerable to evil. However, they had yet to incorporate their understanding of the world. With 'Good and Evil ' being a theme of the novel, it includes subthemes, or ideas that propose the cause of the message.

There are many ways for a director to use film techniques to express an idea to an audience, and one such idea that was expressed to the audience of the visual text “What's Eating Gilbert Grape” directed by Lasse Hallstrom, was that of entrapment. This was achieved in the mommas death scene, by using: props, camera shots, lighting and music, to help the audience understand the idea of entrapment and how it relates to momma with how she is trying to break free of this idea. Props was one technique used by the director to help the audience understand the idea of entrapment. This was done by using a couch, a prop commonly occupied in the Grape family home by momma, an obese widow, to hint at the fact that for many years the couch acted as a sanctuary for momma where she had everything thing done for her as she stayed put. This is like a family of birds where baby birds sit tight in a nest and have everything done for them, except in this case

From everyday experience, readers know how things usually happen and how people react. A distortion of action or an understatement of effect gets a special response from readers, because they consider these changes improbable or the unexpected. The reader has to be alert to the actions of character because actions are the author’s way of showing, not telling, what the characters are like Appearance may be taken as a due to the nature of a character if the author leads the reader to attaché significance to it. Literary analysis is not pure description or a summary of the action, although it may include these elements.

Audience’s feeling and attitude is so fundamental in bolstering one organization. Hopes of an organization in reducing the offensiveness increased whenever it tries to bolster up by the audience’s positive perception. A second possibility is to try to minimize the negative feelings associated with the wrongful act (Benoit, 1997). The organization is able to reduce the offensiveness to the lowest possible level or prevent it from increasing beyond the level if it can minimize the risk of an unpleasant situation and make it seems less significant than it really is. Third, a firm can employ differentiation, in which the act is distinguished from other similar but more offensive actions (Benoit, 1997).
According to Erving Goffman, social interaction is almost similar to a theatre, at the same time people in daily life are likened to be actors on stage, each playing variety of roles. There are individuals who observe the role-playing and react to the performance as the audience. In social interaction, just like in theatrical performance, there are two regions, each with different effects on an individual’s performance: front stage and back stage(Crossman, 2015). The situation that an actor formally performs and adheres to conventions that have meaning to the audience is considered as the front stage. The actor knows he or she is being watched and therefore acts accordingly.
Labov (1972) suggest conversational narratives is a fully verballised oral narrative of personal experience that should have two specific functions, namely referential function and evaluative function. Referential function could be found from the narratives temporally sequenced framework of abstract, orientation, complication, resolution and code while evaluative function the narrator presents particular perspective to evaluate through the audience responses. For instance, Labov asked adolescent African-Americans to tell him about a dangerous situation that they have experienced, evaluative effects are found through the narrator, e.g. external evaluation from adding an explanation or additional description to highlight particular point, embedded evaluation from putting evaluation comments into the characters in the narrative, as well as different kinds of comparisons and intensifiers, like gestures, sound effects, quantifiers, repetition, all of them provided emphasis and created a climax of the narrator. Labov (1972) emphasis evaluative devices enable to tell us whether the story is terrifying, dangerous, wild, crazy, amusing, hilarious, wonderful or even strange enough to be reported. Toolan (2006) mostly agress Labov’s concept on report actions/events in its order and the telling sequence, however, Toolan (2006) believes some part of the
