Ernest Hemingway’s characters are frequently tested in their faith, beliefs, and ideas. To Hemingway’s characters, things that appear to be grounded in reality and unmovable facts frequently are not, revealing themselves to be hollow, personal mythologies. Hemingway shakes his characters out of their comfortable ignorance through traumatic events that usually cause a certain sense of disillusionment with characters mythologies, moving them to change their way of life. Symbolism plays a fundamental role in Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants”. The different symbols used throughout the story are capable of subtly conveying intricate concepts to the readers of this recognized literary work. It then becomes essential for them to detect all these symbols, and discern the deep meanings which they hold in order to truly grasp the story’s message which the author intended to transmit. Character Analysis of “Solider’s Home” In my analysis of the story “Soldiers Home” by Ernest Hemingway, I felt the story had two characters in the story. Harold Krebs was the main character of the story and many details of his life was provided so the reader could have a visual concept of what the author was trying to portray. Kreb’s mother was another character of the story and the author presented her side with many spoken parts.

American novelist and poet Ernest Hemingway’s social commentary about parental pressures leading to mental illnesses, is an issue impacting youth today which demands our attention and greater community awareness. His illustrious poem Advice to a Son will be analysed, resulting in a comparison of other sources from pop culture which similarly complement and explore this confronting youth issue. The poem essentially highlights the influence and strain parents have on their children to reach unattainable expectations, sometimes leading to the diagnosis of a mental illness. Advice to a Son is about the dangers of parental demands, rather than ongoing encouragement. Hemingway could not have known the extent to which this topic would become in youth today.
Hemingway’s alternate endings give insight into what he was thinking and what words were the right ones. He was conscientious with how he wanted the message to be embodied and articulated. Critics argue that A Farewell to Arms should have ended another way, with a happy ending perhaps that captures another side of the author’s writing. The truth is that there was no better way to capture Hemingway’s true personality through the characters if he did not write it himself. In the New York Times article, “A Farewell to Arms with Hemingway’s Alternate Ending” Patrick Hemingway himself said that “but it is absolutely true that no matter how much you analyze a classic bit of writing, you can never really figure out what makes talent work.”
