Korea is called “The Land of the Morning Calm” but Korea lacks the peace that this name implies. The peace of Korea is constantly threatened by the rivalry of the countries that surround it and in particular, the country of Japan (Stokesbury 19). In 1910, Japan made Korea it's colony and oppressed the Korean people. While being oppressed by Japan, the Koreans were treated harshly and were discriminated racially (Halliday and Cumings 15). This oppression ended when the Soviets and Americans stepped in and liberated the little country of Korea in 1945. When the Soviets and Americans entered Korea, it brought the conditions leading up to the Korean War. After liberating Korea, the Soviets entered Korea from the north and in reply, the Americans …show more content…
In these battles, it was not just the North Koreans who initiated the violence but it was also occasionally the South Koreans who initiated. After a year of small battles, North Korea fully invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950. This is the day the Korean War began and the United State's fight against Communism continued (Nishi 12). The North Koreans entered the South supplied with 90,000 men (Nishi 19) and heavy tanks. There was about 50 tanks when they attacked (Halliday and Cumings 73) but the South Koreans had no tanks nor did they have anything to stop the North Korean tanks (Stokesbury 14). The North Koreans were able to take the town of Kaesong and three days later the city of Seoul fell. After they took the city of Seoul, they captured the city of Taejon. North Korea claimed that they did not initiate the attacks but that South Korea did. Although North Korea put the blame on the South, the South claimed that they were only countering the North's attacks (Halliday and Cumings 71). According to Kim Il Sung, Syngman Rhee sought to start a civil war and he used this to back up his reason for why the North did not start the war unprovoked. He used Rhee's threats as an excuse to attack the South (Clare). Even though Kim Il Sung claimed this, evidence seemed to point toward an unprovoked attack as it seemed that North …show more content…
With both sides fighting for their respective government systems, Korea became a pawn in a war bigger than itself (Nishi 13). This was not just a local issue but a global issue (MacArthur 84) and not just Korea's battle but the free world's battle (Pyun 73-74). The United States needed to put an end to the Communist Global Conquest for freedom's sake. Communism was not just a threat to Korea but to the whole world. According to Y.T Pyun, the war would have sprung up somewhere else if it did not start in Korea (73); therefore, the free world needed to work together in order to keep Communism from spreading to their part of the world. Russia wanted to grow Communism (Clare) but the United States was not going to let that happen. The war in Korea seemed to be the beginning of a Soviet plan to dominate all of Asia and ultimately dominate Europe, and this was a major threat to the free world. Harry S. Truman said that “Korea was part of a greater plan for conquering all of Asia” (93). To put an end to this plan it had to be stopped in Korea (Truman 94). If communism spread globally, this would be very detrimental to our
The UN troops were recoiled and disorder and were defending a line well to the south of Seoul, which is the capital of South Korea. During these times morale was down and was looking so good for South Korea. The new field commander General Ridgway was able to slowly start to push north. By mid-April the allies were finally coming back. The only thing was the Chinese launched their offensive.
On June 25th, 1950, Communist North Korea invaded South Korea. South Korea was supported by the United Nations and the U.S., so the soldiers stationed in Japan were moved to South Korea to fight the communist offense. The U.S. forces were overwhelmed by the communists and almost pushed off of the Korean peninsula. In document C, which features some graphics, it is shown that General Douglas MacArthur executed a very risky, but successful counterattack. This risky move allowed the U.N. forces to push the North Korean all the way into the Yalu River, which was the border between North Korea and China.
The Korean War was a proxy war fought between the United States and the USSR, for the purpose of gaining power and political influence in other parts of the world. Since the end of WWII, the USSR and the United States became very hostile against one another, creating what came to be called “The Cold War“ coined by Bernard Baruch in 1947 from the lack of there ever being direct battles against one another. From the result of the bitter and cold rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union came a large chain of indirect battling over political influence in developing or war-torn countries. As this feud occurred the people of the United States mainly wanted there to be a change in Korea out of this war [Doc E], but what was occurring
The Korean War Chart Somebody ... Wanted ... But ... So ... North Korea Wanted to make sure the Korean peninsula into a Communist nation United states and nation Stopped them The Chinese joined the war on the Korean side and pushed the united states and nation back to the 38th parallel line General MacArthur To win china over before they became communist with the soviet union Wasn’t allowed to be a general anymore and he was ordered to stay the 20 mile mark We stayed away from china for the most part and failed to get them to become democracy President Truman To stop soviet expansion , the war, and the spread of communsim Americans didn’t want to go to war The war ended in a statement China To stay in the “safe zone” that way there were no interruptions in their reconstruction They feared that the united states would break into china if the us and south Korean were allowed into war China planned a surprise attack and defeated American troops
Following WWII, the Allied powers split up the Korean peninsula similarly to how Germany had been divided, with the Soviets controlling the North and the US controlling the South. This led to a communist North Korea and non-communist South Korea, and when these two wanted to unify, both wanted to do so on their premises. The North, then attacked the South to take over as a way to unify, leading to a war between the two. The US, as well as other countries, entered the conflict between the nations in order to combat or advocate for the spread of communism. The United States, one of the countries opposing communism under was led at this time by President Harry Truman.
Korea’s history already determined it was a weak country, having been a pawn for Far Eastern powers, so Cold War had left it nearly destroyed with epidemics, poverty, limited education, and authoritarian rulers (LaFeber, 2008). In this state, Korea was left vulnerable to communism. In 1945, the 38th parallel marked the ally agreement of disarming the occupying Japanese military, however by the end of the Korean War, it would be the indivisible line that divided the country between communism and democracy (LaFeber, 2008). In June 1950, when North Korean troops passed the 38th parallel, President Truman gave the order for American air and naval units to move into action to aid South Korea and to show the United States’ opponents that “the United States was no longer content with mere “containment” but now aimed for liberation (LaFeber, 2008, p. 114). LaFeber (2008) explains President Truman’s intent, “
America joined South Korea while China and the Soviet Union joined North Korea. The outcome of the war resulted in no winner. Since there was no victory for either country, Korea returned to the same status before the war, two countries of different beliefs (Cannarella 45). Although the outcome of the war was no victory for either side, Truman’s decision to participate in the war was proper because America’s goal was to prevent the spread of communism. When looking from this perspective, the war was a victory because the spread of communism was
Following WWII, in 1945, the division of Korea was initiated. The Soviet Union established a pro-communist government on the Northside of Korea and Americans created a pro-democratic government on the Southside of Korea. After the division, known as the 38th parallel, occurred, North Korea began to attack again. This attack consisted of both the South and North pushing each other farther from the 38th parallel until the Chinese troops drove them back to the 38th parallel. The United States and The Soviet Union knew the war was not going anywhere but still persisted to continue.
On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, North Korea, and the Republic of Korea, South Korea. This has reached international proportions since the spark of war. Concerned that the Soviet Union and Communist China may have encouraged this invasion, the United States became involved. The United States fought in the Korean War to contain communism. The United States was successful in fighting this war for the reason that they succeeded in preventing communism from overtaking and spreading while benefiting from war efforts.
The biggest challenges faced by America in the Korean War were, Korea not being able to defend itself, tactics Korean communist troops used against America and soldiers thinking the war as useless while questioning “What are we fighting for?” The Korean War lasted from 1950 to 1953, beginning when the North Korean communist army crossed the 38th parallel and invaded non-communist South Korea. As Kim II-sung's North Korean troops armed with soviet tanks, quickly overran South Korea and the United States came to South Korea's aid. If South Korea was not able to carry itself without the Unite States and the Soviet Union getting involved then that would cause another world war, because all of Korea would become communist because of North Korea
Grace Fullenkamp Ms. Yane AP Lang March 14, 2018 The Korean War The Korean War was not a conflict in which the United States needed to be involved as to its horrific outcome is testament. Yet, in the 1950s, the U.S. thought it was believed that the only way to stop the spread of communism was to fight back against the potential formation of communist governments. When war broke out in Korea, it became a place for the United States to make a statement against communism on a global front joining with South Korea to combat the communist North.
The Korean war was a disaster for the Soviet Union. Their goal was to put all of Korea under Communist control, which they didn’t succeed in. The Soviet’s aggression led them to be perceived on the world stage as willing and able to help third world countries establish Communism which helped them grow in
In 1950, Kim ll Sung invaded South Korea with his army. After the Korean war ended, Kim ll Sung started to execute Christians in North
This agreement from both nations only lasted several years when 75000 North Korean soldiers initiated the Korean War when they crossed over the 38th parallel which separated the South from the North on June 25th, 1950. The war was provoked due to the different perspectives on their government ruling, however the main reason was because of the global tensions from the cold war. On the surface, the Korean War seemed to be a war between North and South Korea, but superpowers of the world were just using it to confront each other without actually going into a war for their nation. After three years of killing, the nations agreed to an armistice bringing the invasions to an end. However a peace
After the war, in 1948, Korea was split in two. The Republic of Korea, controlled by the Allies, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, ruled by the Soviets. Both considering themselves the ruling government there was tension which led to North Korea’s invasion of the South on June 25th, 1950. This sparked the Korean war between the American and the Vietnamese. In 1953 the war was over and Korea was still split in two with a De militarized zone in between.
