Abstract
The aim of this paper is to scrutinize the cross cultural clashes and also about the identity and loyalty problems faced by the young immigrant in a different world. Bapsi Sidhwa is a Pakistani feminist writer and most of her works deal with life in the Parsi community. This paper tries to integrate important issues such as prejudice, globalization and women rights. In An American Brat .Bapsi Sidhwa highlights the predicament of the Pakistani people and of the parsi community. This paper has thrown light upon the gender differences which have been imposed upon a woman under the guise of traditional taboos.
Key Words: Culture, Immigrant Experience, Parsi Community, Traditions. Every country has its unique culture that shapes the people inhabiting it. The story of the novel An American Brat revolves around a young girl, who strongly beliefs in the laws of Muslim community thus she slowly ingrains the muslim beliefs and resist parsi community norms and values. This is about the young immigrant experience, from Pakistan to the United States, in the late 1970s. The novel also touches upon the reservations and anxiety experienced by different sects in Pakistan due to the change from Bhutto’s liberal era to Zia’s conservative one.
