The “Like Kanye Loves Kanye” meme originates from what may be most obvious, the
vain reputation of rapper Kanye West. Kanye is known for not only his music, but his selfish
personality. For example, in September of 2009, Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift’s speech after
she won the award for Best Female Video at MTV’s Video Music Awards (Know Your Meme). He
got on stage, took the microphone from Taylor Swift, and proceeded telling the audience that
Beyoncé had “one of the best videos of all time” (Alessandro R. C. ). The picture shown in the
meme comes from this specific incident. The meme also alludes to the cliché saying “I want
someone to love me,” which is common for people to say who are looking for a relationship.

In other words, the exaggeration of a situation
can become so great that it is funny. This method of humor is present in the Kanye meme since
the creator uses an exaggeration to compare the kind of love he or she is looking for with the
love Kanye has for himself. The meme alludes to the idea that Kanye is very selfish and self-
centered, implying that he loves himself like a couple in a relationship should love each other.
This is an exaggeration because Kanye probably does not literally love himself, he just acts like
The meme alludes to Kayne’s incredibly selfish attitude to suggest the amount of love
Kanye has for himself is the same amount of love someone lonely wants to receive. Analyzing
this idea, the meme also uses the type of humor known as irony. Ironic humor involves
“incongruity and discordance with norms, in which the intended meaning is opposite, or nearly
opposite, to the literal meaning” (Nichols). The chosen meme is ironic because the creator
seems to be asking for the kind of love a conceited person has for himself or herself. When in
search of love, one does not typically desire selfish qualities in their spouse or mate.
In constructing irony the reader sees it as
(MIP) This meme relates to an important part of the book, it is the fact that Montag’s feelings on society change, and he is against the society. (SIP-A) The society is against books and will burn them and the possibly the person containing them if they are found. (STEWE-1) This is when Montag says that he took burning books to a whole new level, “‘We burned a thousand books.
Irony brings about some additional meanings to a situation. Ironical statements and situations in literature develop readers’ interest. Irony makes a work of literature more intriguing and forces the readers to use their imagination and comprehend the underlying meanings of the texts. Moreover, real life is full of ironical expressions and situations. Therefore, the use of irony brings a work of literature closer to the life.
Sedaris uses irony in his memoir “Us and Them”. As the Tomkeys go out of town during Halloween, they leave a bowl of candy outside their door with a note that says “don’t be greedy” (852). Later, Sedaris explains to us his bag of candy that is labeled “My candy. Keep out” (852). This is ironic because Tomkeys were kind enough to share with others even while they were gone but David could not.
The article “Why Democrats Are Terrified of ‘Woke Kanye’”, the writer Scott Morefield tells the reader that Kanye West’s “political beliefs” are a threat to the Democratic Party. The author uses specific examples throughout the story to efficiently build up his argument. The author commences the article by stating that Kanye West seems to support President Trump because of the word “decentralize”. Then the author uses Fox News as an example to show that Williams and Guilfoyle are both right, but they did not touch on the political side; since most of their arguments are about West as a singer and a successful businessman.
The concealment of a deeper meaning through the use of irony is a powerful tool that can be utilized to bring about a greater impact to the actual meaning of what was intended. The use of irony is more common than it is thought to be, thus resulting in an incorrect use of the language device. In the article “Word police: irony & ironic” it is stated, “People routinely use without knowing what they mean. No one seems to use the dictionary anymore--and thus they end up sounding ignorant. ”(1).
Irony is present in everyday life. It has become the crux of thousands of jokes, remarks and even the media. Thousands of stories include irony in them in the form of ironic twists, characters, and plotlines. The irony in stories is often sidelined or overlooked; however, it can be so much more. In “The Veldt”, it is, in fact, a large part of the story.
Edgar Allan Poe creates horror and suspense in his use of irony -including verbal irony, situational irony, and dramatic irony-in his short story “ The Tell-Tale Heart”. Verbal irony is when something that is said means the opposite of what is meant. Poe uses verbal irony when he states, “ I loved the old man.” Situational irony is similar. It is defined as when what happens is different from or even the opposite of what we expected.
The immense passion shown in their love led to them even dying for each other. Another quote from the test states, “Around the world, people love. They sing for what they love, they compose poems and stories about love. They pine for love, they live for love, they kill for love, and they die for love” (Doc C).” This quote shows how far people are willing to go for love and the unstoppable urges that come with it.
1. Irony as we talked about in class is considered to be intellectual or a sort of dry humor. It also has a double meaning, where you say one thing but the opposite meaning is implied. For example, in the reading “SantaLand Diaries” David and another elf realized that Santa is an anagram of Satan. So they would substitute the word for Santa by using Satan in front of customers.
Finally, Cole talks about how he’s going to make something out of himself even though he grew up living a struggling lifestyle. “Love Yourz” is one of the songs I can relate to because the lyrics show that no matter how messed up your life is, you should learn to love the life you have. “Love Yourz” made me realize that there will always be someone there to support my decisions and accept the person I am, and who I am to become Even though I cannot relate to having the status of a successful rapper, it is important to reflect on the ideas that J Cole emphasizes on. The hook (“No such thing as a life that’s better than yours”) sums up the whole idea of the song.
The Ironic Truth Irony is a complex and important element of literature that can help discover hidden perspectives within characters or hide the truth in plain sight. The story by Edgar Allen Poe, “The Cask of Amontillado” is a great example the dark ironic twist that happen in the story. The main character, Montresor, is hell-bent on getting his revenge on the man who shamed him, Fortunato. The verbal and dramatic irony that is being used in the story “The Cask of Amontillado” helps hide the true intentions that Montresor has planned for Fortunato. Verbal irony happens when one character says one thing but actually means something completely different.
Through the simile, Kenyon conveys the idea that love can be shy to show itself, and will gradually appear and change one’s life for the better. The imagery allows the reader to visualize the scene in which the author is observing from. The simile applies to Kenyon’s own life, as her husband must have made her feel lucky; she realizes how happy she is to be with him. The timid suitor is a symbol for how happiness is fleeting and that it does not stay for long once it does come; through the use of the simile, Kenyon is able to express her ideas
Irony is often used in literature to illustrate certain situations to the audience. In some pieces of literature that might be pointing out an unjust system, in others that might be to add a comedic effect, but whatever situation the author wants to illustrate, irony is very beneficial. Through small and witty, one-liners, or a bigger dramatic irony situation contrasting two very different situations, irony can be very beneficial for the reader to understand the story. Both “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins have a corrupt dystopian society. Through the use of irony, the author can portray the corruptness to the audience.
Irony is a technique that involves surprising, interesting, or amusing contradictions or contrasts ( Glossary... Pg 1). The greatest example of irony happens when it turns out Armand is the one that comes from black heritage. He learns this when he “finds a letter from his mom to his father explaining how he is black” turning the main plot of this story around (Chopin... Pg 5)
