Totem poles are interesting pieces of tradition and history. Traditionally used by the native peoples of the Northwestern coast, they are popular pieces of art among society and are considered a big part of Coastal Indian culture. Despite their importance, nobody can really agree on what totem poles are meant for. They are usually said to be storytellers or marks of prestige, as well as a way to honor the deceased. Nowadays they are often made for art, but their traditional purposes still stand. The animals that make up the totem pole have different meanings to different people, but certain traits of the animals are usually agreed on by society. Using these presented traits and playing mix-and-match with your own traits, you can find a list of “spirit animals” that are most like you. I did this, and here are my “results”. The animal I think I identify the most with is a mouse. The first (and probably most obvious) reason is that I’m a quiet introvert that almost never socializes with others. I would rather hide in my room than hang out with people, …show more content…
This is mainly because, once again, I’m an introvert that tries not to get involved with other people or activities unless I can directly see how it will benefit and help me. My energy level also varies throughout the year, with most of winter feeling tiring all the time. Certain days I’ll be super active and be basically running around constantly, but almost always I’m having lazy, sluggish days. The final trait I have is probably the “shell” that the snake has. As the website had stated, people who have the snake as a spirit animal usually have a tough shell that they hide behind. I kind of have a shell, but it’s not a tough facade I hide behind. It’s more of a “pretending I care” shell that I am easily able to make friends using (I know, it’s edgy). Those were all of the traits for a snake, so onto a third lame
All of the symbols have different meanings but help share stories and are of high importance to Lame Deer and many other Native
Sloths By:Cameron R, Did you know that sloths are the slowest animal in the world? Did you also know that sloths spend almost their whole life in trees? While they are in the trees they eat leaves that are on the trees. If they are not eating leaves they will eat little insects on the ground.
The Navajo and the Modoc: Mythological comparison In the myths “When Grizzlies Walked Upright” and “The Navajo Origin Legend”, we get a glimpse of the beliefs of traditional Native American societies. The former myth is one told by the Modoc tribe of Oregon, the other is told by the Navajo tribe of the American Southwest. The different uses of animals, spirits, and women’s roles help create an illustration of society before colonization. These myths do also differ on these themes and on how they are presented.
For instance, I try to see things from the perspective of others. I regularly complete small acts of kindness like, holding a door, offering assistance, granting a compliment, and so on. Additionally, a deer is my spirit animal because they symbolize feminine qualities like beauty, girlishness, fashion, etc. In particular, I find joy in shopping for new clothes and styling myself in the morning. I treasure making myself feel confident and beautiful through my appearance.
Some traditions were also to roll a flaming wagon down a hill to mark the turning wheel of the year. The Winter Nights festival commemorates the remembrance of family spirits and honoring Disir. Lastly, Einherjar or the feast of the fallen, was a very important holiday for the Asatru. This is held on November 11 of every year , as it honours the fallen in battle and joined Odin's warriors in Valhalla. Totem animals such as the bear, boar, bovine, dragon, eagle, horse, raven, stag, and wolf were common animals you saw in totems, as they were very rich in spiritual symbolism.
Symbolism especially with animals played a huge part in the Native American religion party. Native American religion is something hard to define. In order for you to understand the meaning of their religion you have to grow up submersed in the beliefs, practices, and know the traditions of any tribe. It’s something really different, it isn’t the same as becoming a born-again Christian or converting to judaism. Each tribute and peoples had their own unique beliefs, legends, and rituals, but they all believed the world was filled with spirits.
The article “Seattle's Native American art reconnects with Salish tribes' traditions” on theguardian.com said that it's impossible to picture the Pacific Northwest tribes without the image of a totem pole. “Considered by many as the emblem of the native people of North America, the poles have been the iconic symbol of the region since the late 19th century… The tradition of art-making focused on smaller, personal objects or interior houseposts shown only to select guests.” Masks were carefully carved from cedar trees into many sizes and shapes with different patterns. From the grasses, rushes, roots and bark, they made baskets and weaved mats.
Totem poles are a way to show who you are through symbolism. In the novel Touching Spirit Bear, Cole uses a totem pole to remind him how he needs to act everyday of his life. He carves his totem pole to let out his inner anger and to use his time on the island wisely. The first thing on my totem pole is a fish. Fish see things from underneath, just like I do.
Vivian benne Hist Professor Date Navajo and Cherokee The Cherokee Nation is Oklahoma's largest Indian group and the second largest in the United States. The Cherokee Nation are the direct descendants of the tribal government that governed over much of the southeastern United States before European colonization. Navajos were already settled in the “Four Corners” area of the Colorado Plateau before Christopher Columbus ever came to the united states. These two tribes are among the largest indigenous Americans that survived the European colonization of what is now the United States of America.
Horned Serpents are usually described as huge, scaly, dragon–like serpents with horns and long teeth. They would usually be found in lakes and rivers, but sometimes they move about on the land. In Ancient Native American myths and legends horned serpents possess magical abilities like shape shifting, invisibility, and hypnotic powers. They also give power medicine to humans who defeat them or help them they also are said to control storms and weathers. Tie-snakes are mythological water spirits of southeastern tribes.
I have a group of friends composed of four to six people, and we are extremely close. We are more sisters than friends. In contrast to I behave without them (not talking and keeping to myself), I am outgoing, opinionated, and confident around them. Even if we are in a room full of people that I am uncomfortable with, I 'm completely fine and happy with
Maybe it’s because no one likes to be with them or the person itself is bullied by people. Being lonely is not okay because you have nothing to talk with, to laugh and to share about our
Over the course of the past two weeks I was able to design and create my own personal totem pole. Although it is relatively small in size and composed of a paper towel roll, the totem pole consists of many symbols and elements which are significant to me. The totem pole is separated 4 segments. The top segment consists of a beaver. The second and third portions are an eagle with its wings on the side.
I have always been a rather outgoing person when I am around my peers, but it used to be a different story for me outside of school. I never went out of my way to talk to adults because I had this
These personality trates make me who I am. Another thing about personalities are the qualities that you possess. For example, my qualities are very close to my personality type. I have a kindness in me along with the forgiveness
