As a graduating senior, I am faced with the ever-daunting question of what I want to do after college. In the past, it was significantly easier to get a job without a college education.
However, as the value of a college education became more evident, more and more people started to attend college. Eventually, a college education became a necessity to compete in the job market. However, as more people began attending college, the less impressive a college education became. Today, college graduates must find a way to “stand out” in the global workforce. In a world with 195 countries almost completely connected through technological channels, the term “global workforce” has never been more important for college students to understand. The ability to work across cultures is the future of the job market. In Erich
Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front, Remarque notably quotes, “for us lads of eighteen they ought to have been mediators and guides to the world of maturity, the world of work, of duty, of culture, or progress—to the future” (Remarque, 1958/2010, pp.12). Studying abroad is a transformative experiential learning opportunity that gives students the chance to experience different and new cultures that will ultimately stimulate open-mindedness and tolerance. This tolerance is a necessary skill to possess in today’s global workforce because it promotes efficient and effective communication and promotes international cooperation.

With instant global communication at our fingertips, it has never been more important for people to facilitate effective communication.
