A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin the second book in his series A Song of Ice and Fire is about the war for who is the rightful King of Westeros. The main houses that are involved in the war are the Starks, Lannisters, and the two Baratheon brothers. Robb Stark is wanting to be seperate form the kingdom and wanting to be King in the North and ruling over the small houses in the north. Joffrey Baratheon or more like his mother Cersei Lannister wants to stop the war and get rid of not only the Starks but the Baratheons as well. And the Baratheon brothers Stannis and Renly, they both want to be the King of Westeros and are not only fighting Joffrey but also each other. George R. R. She doesn’t have her own chapters in the book but she is always mentioned in Tyrion Lannisters chapters, Martin wrote “Tyrion reflected on the men who had been Hand before him, who had proved no match for his sisters wiles. How could they be? Men like that ... too honest to live, too noble to shit, Cersei devours such fools every morning when she breaks her fast. The only way to defeat my sister is to play her own game, and that was something the Lords Stark and Arryn would never do.” (pg. 405). In this quote Tyrion was comparing Cersei to the noblemen that had tried to play her game, lost, and were killed. She always has something or someone up her sleeve so she is able to keep order in her corrupted kingdom, playing her game of thrones getting rid of those in her way or trying to get rid of her. The description of the men that Cersei that she had killed, the men who had wanted to keep their reputation clean and their pride strong, fell into her trap of lies and deception thinking that she was like them. They were very wrong, she doesn’t care what the people think because she denies it even though it is found to be true. So the characterization of Cersei Lannister helps send the message because she is one of the characters that others should be cautious with what is told to her and what is done around her. If she finds out someone …show more content…
More than halfway through the book the rising action is still being added to. The characters that are seeing and being apart of the action are the ones that are at the center of the war. Martin wrote “Do all maesters lie so poorly? I told Varys that I was giving Prince Doran my nephew Tommen to foster. I told Littlefinger that I planned to wed Myrcella to Lord Robert of the Eyrie. I told no one that I offered Myrcella to the Dornish ... that truth was only in the letter that I entrusted to You.”(pg 409). At this point in the story Tyrion was trying to figure out who reported to Cersei. And this added to the plot because this is the ending of Tyrion's plan to stop the queen from manipulating more and from her learning his plan. So the plot structure helps send the message by George Martin continuing to add to the rising action, adding to the suspense of the story, making the reader on edge on who is trustworthy of other characters trust. With having the characters show their true self or being called out on being the one who shares all they
The book starts out in Boston in the middle of the Boston Massacre. It is in this scene where the main conflict is revealed, that conflict being the colonists hopes of independence from England, and the English’s abuse of their power over the colonists. As the story goes on, we see the Sons of Liberty become a prominent group among the colonists, along with meeting various members of the group. Additionally, the growing fear in England also plays a major role in the story. An interesting aspect of the book is that you can see both sides of the war and the anger.
The seven chapters consist of about three sub divisions per chapter. Throughout chapters one through seven, there are several key points that are discussed. Chapter one begins in October 26, 1775 with the first person introduced, King George III McCullough then explained the conditions of England prior to and during the deployment of British troops to America. The war under commanders Howe and Washington officially began in Lexington then continued with the battles of Concord and then Bunker Hill. After King George III heard about the Bunker Hill incident, he sent his British troops off to Boston to take park in the battle.

In document A, “King Philip’s Perspective” King Philip stated, “the English made them drunk and then cheated them ; that now, they had no hope left to keep any land.” Both authors in both documents wrote that King Philip lost land from the colonists. In document B, “Colonists‘ Perspective” Edward Randolph said, “God is punishing them for their behavior."
President Herbert Hoover prolifically described the Battle of King’s Mountain when he stated, “History has done scant justice to its significance, which rightly should place it beside Lexington and Bunker Hill, Trenton and Yorktown, as one of the crucial engagements in our long struggle for independence.” (The American Presidency Project, 1930) It was a little battle and a little army that fought it, but it was of enormous importance. Following the two major British victories at Charleston and Camden, it appeared that American resistance was at an end as General Charles Cornwallis looked to have a clear path all the way to Virginia. By September 1780, Cornwallis was making plans to invade North Carolina.
W.L. Mackenzie King’s decision to conscript soldiers during WWII is necessary and justified. The poster 's message is to simply convince Canadian citizens to agree that conscription is necessary for the Allies to win the war. The propaganda poster is targeted towards Canadian citizens but mainly young males and French Canadians living in Quebec. It is important to target French Canadians to agree with conscription because majority of French Canadians voted “no” and are against conscripting soldiers for the reason that they feel excluded and not connected to the war. Whereas, English Canadians feel nationalism causing them to agree with conscription and vote “yes”.
War is an evil that can destroy nations, but without it, there is the potential for even more chaos in our imperfect world. Many wicked and corrupt institutions throughout history have been stopped by wars, further advancing society. Detrimental repercussions of combat, such as destroyed homes or lost lives, are justified by the anticipation of a better future. In the novel My Brother Sam is Dead, by James and Christopher Collier, Tim Meeker must decide if war is worth the bloodshed and loss to secure freedom for himself, and for America’s posterity. By the end of the story, the ironic deaths of Ned, Life, and Sam contribute to Tim’s decision to remain neutral.
“War is never fair,” Colonel Read admitted (Collier and Collier 200). In the book, My Brother Sam is Dead, the authors James and Christopher Collier show that war is never fair and they are against it. They use Tim and Sam Meeker to show how it is not fair. The authors use separation of families, gruesome killings, and principle versus realities to show that they are against war. War has many effects on people and has taken many innocent lives.
This shows Kent’s intentions of feeding into Lear’s downfall by pretending to be someone else just to prove his love and watch out for him. As Kent pretends to be Caius, he’s only telling Lear what he wants to hear, and not the obvious truth: that his daughters are evil, and the power he had a confident grip on for so many years is slipping out of his fingers like grains of

How does Hill create a powerfully dramatic sense of fear and tension in this extract? In Susan Hill 's book "I 'm the King of the Castle", some of the main themes are tension and fear. Hill uses many literary techniques to create a heinous and dramatic atmosphere (following the theme of gothic literature), while still keeping a sense of dark excitement. Kingshaw 's fears and feelings are conveyed using a selection of linguistic techniques, letting the reader see deep into his thoughts.
