In the article “Be Down with the Brown” by Elizabeth Martinez gives a good understanding and purpose to the readers to acknowledge the injustice and brutality that was happening. On March 1968 many Chicanos and Chicanas decided to go out and strike In the streets of Los Angeles. Over 10,000 were out protesting for the affirmation of their cultural values and better educational changes and as well as the racism. Chicanos and Chicanas took pride in making a change and making their voices heard by walking out of their school’s premises. They knew that by walking out would bring the attention since the schools will be loosing $17.20 or more for each unexcused absence per day. In the lecture It talks about Martin Luther King who is an advocate and motivational civil right speaker. Martin fought for the rights of blacks to not be looked down just for their skin color. After the civil rights was passed before King death there was one last event “The Poor People's March” it was to unite all people, all ages, all races and all beliefs to speak out against poverty. The way People unite to take a stand as one to have their voices heard so the prejudice and discrimination will end seems to be an ongoing cycle. Later that Spring In 1968 Chicano students in East Los Angeles walked out of their classrooms,to stop discrimination In their School systems. FBI gets involved and starts charging people with conspiracy and all people got intimidated people seem to step back from the government. In the lecture states something very important to what reality is now “There were marches and protests, but it wasn't the same. Malcolm X was dead. Martin was dead. Medger Evers was dead. Other Civil Rights leaders were in jail. It seemed like the air had just come out of the balloon. Hope wasn't gone, but it was fading away”.
