Growing up in a Hispanic household, you tend to spend most of your childhood watching telenovelas with your mother and grandmother. Telenovelas, or otherwise known as overdramatized soap operas, are very popular in the Hispanic culture. My mother, grandmother and I would set aside time after doing my homework and taking a bath, to watch a specific telenovela. We would watch Maria fall in love with Fernando while he was about to marry another woman; only for Maria and Fernando to find true love with one another at the end of the story. As a young girl, growing up and watching these love affairs unravel on television, I began to shape my beliefs on what I thought love was and how one should be treated and loved in a relationship.
The irony of the lottery is that it’s random and everyone has the same chance of being picked, it also exposes what kind of character Mrs. Hutchinson is. Mrs. Hutchinson at first is thought to be a caring mother, but when under pressure, instead of attempting to protect her children, she selfishly wanted to include all her children, specifically her married daughter, in the drawing to make them “take their chance” (299), to improve her chances of survival. Mrs. Delacroix and Mrs. Hutchinson are good friends, joking about Mrs. Hutchinson’s tardiness to the drawing. Although they’re friends, “Mrs. Delacroix selected a stone so large she had to pick it up with both hands” (301) and promotes the stoning of Mrs. Hutchinson. The irony of the friendship is that the ritual is so embedded in the community that Mrs. Delacroix does not hesitate to murder her good

1. Laura Miller’s “The Magician’s Book: A Skeptic’s Adventures in Narnia” approaches the topic of her favourite childhood book with careful nostalgia. Miller compares her experience with “The Chronicles of Narnia” to an adult “love affair”. Miller concedes that her time with Narnia as a child was a form of escapism, wishing more than anything she could belong in that world. But as her mind developed with age, and she discovered the parallel synonym of Narnia to Christianity, she felt somewhat betrayed by C.S. Lewis.

I struggled with reading and writing for several years due to being labeled with a learning disability. When I was in fourth grade a Special Education teacher would arrive in my mainstream classroom to take me with him into his miniature classroom. Throughout my previous years in elementary school several Special Education teachers had done the same, but it wasn’t until then I began to realize other students didn’t have to go. I went with the Special Education teacher several times a day, whether it was for assistance with the class work or testing modifications. It wasn’t until seventeen years later, when I applied for Hopkinsville Community College, that I was informed I had never been diagnosed by a Psychologist.
