The play Inherit The Wind was based on the Scopes Monkey trial thirty years before the book was written in 1995 by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee. Inherit The Wind explores how government and society suppress freedom speech. It is important to recognize that issues conveyed in the play about the Scopes Monkey Trial parallel the challenges being faced by the arts community in 1955. In 1955, McCarthyism had reached it pinnacle with many in the arts community being blacklist as communist sympathizers. While some themes appear more frequently than others man vs. society, freedom of thought, and search for the truth can be applied to the Scopes Monkey trial and the issues of the day.

The first part of the quote clearly shows how people in the town of Hillsboro felt afraid. They felt like they could not have any opinions that did not conform to what the town thought because they were scared to get the cold shoulder from other residents of the town. Freedom of thought is very important and the play Inherit. The Wind examples of this are when Drummond the defence lawyer was very interested in winning the case to prove that teaching evolution in the classroom should not be frowned upon but should actually be applauded because he wants the children of Hillsboro to know there are different opinions and beliefs in the world not just the one in this small town. This example shows how fighting passionately against censoring knowledge was demonstrated in the book. “You have no more right to spit on his religion than you have a right to spit on my religion! Or my lack of it! ” this quote said by Mr.Drummond is a good representation …show more content…
In small towns, it is hard to have a lot of diversity, especially in the 1950s. One of the most apparent ways we see the theme man vs society in the book is in the town of Hillsboro where there was one belief that the whole town had which was god created the earth and if you will be an outsider just like Cates who was shunned when he taught evolution in his classroom. A good quote from the book that represents this is “It’s the loneliest feeling in the world—to find yourself standing up when everybody else is sitting down.” said by Drummond. In a small town, it’s hard to change people's opinions and assumptions when they have grown up being taught and having seen it all one way. After the trial verdict is declared and Cates is pronounced guilty. Drummond turns to him and says “You don’t suppose this kind of thing is ever finished, do you? Tomorrow it’ll be something else—and another fella will have to stand up. And you’ve helped give him the guts to do it”. This quote implies is that in the past people in society have tested social standards forcing everyone to alter they way they are thinking. Drummond and Cates can only hope this happens in the town of Hillsboro after this big trail has just happened. I believe seeing this the theme of man vs society throughout the book gave the audience/readers the book gave them the understanding when they express their opinion in can have a positive

The Monkey trial is in essence a drama over the educational validity of teaching science as science and of the teaching religious belief as a form of verifiable knowledge.
In the late 1940’s, Senator Joseph McCarthy began a tyrannical attack against the people of America. McCarthy went through the nation and accused powerful people of being a part of the communist party. McCarthy had no grounds for his accusations; he would just keep accusing people until they broke down and just said they were a communist to end his attacks. His form of “trial” worked until he tried to accuse Arthur Miller, a brilliant play write, of being a communist. Arthur Miller was livid and fought against Senator McCarthy and his House Committee on Un-American Activities the only way he knew.
Matthew Brady inherits the wind Do you ever think that maybe the person who inherited the wind in the story could be right there but you just can’t think of it? Well that’s the way I felt till I realized that the person who it made the most sense for it was Matthew Brady. Why you may ask or how I could think that I will answer that question shortly.
Authority is something that many people do not take seriously. Whether it may be a sibling, parent, teacher, or any sort of hierarchy, nobody wants to feel as if there is somebody who has a higher status or who has control over them, especially when it interferes with their right to express their views and opinions. The play, Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose, tells the story of twelve jurors who are trapped in a jury room due to the fact that they are unable to come to a unanimous verdict on a very important and questionable court case. The book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, is told from the point of view of a young girl, Scout, who learns about herself and the others around her from the situations happening in her life. Although both
All literature is written with a specific message that the writer is trying to convey. Inherit the Wind is a very complex play with several different themes, one of which is that one must look beyond the surface to seek the truth. Through the use of Drummond’s character, the rivalry between Drummond and Brady, and the contents of the trial itself, this play shows readers that things may not always be what they seem. Firstly, Drummond’s character may seem biased due to his position, but he is shown to be fair and open to all opinions.

Janet: Oblivious to the Obvious Due to Mental Manipulation Janet, the main character in McKnight Malmar’s short story “The Storm,” is not only married to a murderer, but also a victim of mental and emotional manipulation. Janet is gullible to Ben’s suspicious actions and does not question him at all, despite obvious red flags. The fact that Janet believes that the storm is making her see things that are not real, instead of putting together the evidence that her husband has displayed, is proof that Janet is used to questioning the validity of her own perception regularly. Ben takes advantage of Janet’s naivety and codependency to the point where she does not question him about anything, but instead, questions her own sanity. It is evident from the very beginning of the story that Janet relies on Ben for comfort.

Humans live in a world where moral values are very clearly set determining what is good and what is bad. We know what scares us and how racism should be treated.
