Community In Chrysalids

In the middle of the twentieth century, many novel-catastrophes were written. The Cold War and the associated arms race frightened and inspired the best writers, including John Wyndham. What did those writers want to tell us, the future generations? Can it be their warning to modern society?

Religion was not clearly stressed throughout the story, but it is important to every individual, including Harriet Jacobs. Harriet uses her religion, Christianity to guide her in the correct path and protect her from those who cause violence and danger. Throughout difficult times, slaves depended on religion as a time of peace and relaxation to help them go through many challenges in their lives. In the text of the, “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl”, before she embarked her journey to escape, on page 576, it states that, “I prayed that God would not forsake me in this hour of utmost need.” This shows that her feelings and prayers affect her life and every critical move that she makes. Harriet Tubman was an extraordinary heroine. She was brave herself in saving many lives, including her parents. She was a heroic person doing heroic actions; saving people when her life depended on it. At one point, since Harriet was saving so many people, she was worth around $40,000. Yet Harriet was not taught math and science, in fact, she was an illiterate person, but she was smarter than the slave overseers and the masters. Harriet was a heroine; hero, for being such a kind, translucent person. Harriet knew her weaknesses and her strengths, but her strengths hid her weaknesses in the shadows. One very important activist in our history was Cesar Chavez who, along with Harriet Tubman, stood up for human rights. Cesar Chavez wanted to change the fact that field workers were being mistreated, and they didn’t have their rights as a “normal person” would. Harriet Tubman was also an activist who helped out slaves for their freedom and justice. They were being treated unfairly simply because of their skin color/race. Cesar Chavez and Harriet Tubman fought for the discrimination people were receiving, this was mainly caused because they were thought as “less than”.

There are many positive reasons to embrace traditions and there is a need to introduce and enforce rules for social conformity to ensure that society can function without undue chaos. However, taken to their extremes, blind acceptance of traditions and strict social conformity can lead to the persecution and destruction of fellow human beings. In part, strict allegiance to traditions and requiring social compliance in conforming to one type of thinking can result in a “cult-like” mentality. This mentality continues if there is no opportunity to allow for creative and independent thinking. The end result is a narrow-minded perspective that can hold down others who express other opinions or live in an opposing manner. The Chrysalids by John Wyndham is a post-apocalyptic dystopian novel about how the Waknuk people believe God has willed one race with specific characteristics. This race of people is determined by the ‘Definition of Man’. To keep this race unmixed, they eradicate all blasphemies and deviations. In doing so, they believe they are creating a perfect society when they are only causing innocent lives to be lost. Believing that one race is better than another results in conflict and harm to their own kind. This novel is considered an allegory of the Holocaust. I have always hated to put myself in other people's shoes for situations I’ve never endured due to those feelings never being the exact same from the actual persons going through whatever it is they are going through. I tried putting myself in Harriet Jacobs shoes, wondering of all the possible things I would have done or tried furthermore, all the things I would not have tried or followed through with. I applaud all and any slave that has ever tried to escape being if they actually got away or even if they got caught. Harriet Jacobs, referred to in the book as Linda Brent, was a strong, caring, Native American mother of two children Benny and Ellen. She wrote a book about her life as a slave and how she earned freedom for herself and her family. Throughout her book she also reveals countless examples of the limitations slavery can have on a mother. Her novel, also provides the readers a great amount of examples of how motherhood has been corrupted by slavery. A Moment is defined as “a very brief period of time” (Google.com). The specific moment that I had chose in the Incidence in The Life of a Slave Girl is “I feared that the sight of my children would be too much for my full heart; but I could not go out into the uncertain future without one last look.

In the story, “Civil Rights Activists: Harriet Tubman,” it says, “Physical pain was a part of daily life for Tubman and her family.” This shows that she and her family were slaves. Slaves that were being sold and mistreated by slaveowners.

It is clear that John Wyndham wrote The Chrysalids as a warning for today’s society, based on the comparisons that are drawn between the society of Waknuk, the Old People, Sea land, and our current society. More specifically, the current technological advancements, the existence of fundamentalist groups, and the slowly changing concept of “freedom of speech”.

Overall the outcomes of women in resistance is very positive. Though getting to there goal had cost the lives of many women and the torture of thousands. Without their sacrifices and the help from some countries such as East Timor, Greece, or USA get to where they are today. In 1921 Karel Capek play’s "Rossum Unıversal Robots," named his artificial servants "robots," from the Czech word robota, which roughly means as "serf worker or someone who does boring work." We continue to use the name robot even though there are other words lıke cyborg , android and humanoıd.
