Research shows that “the NKVD had its eyes on the rich peasants, academics, artists, and scientists. The purge was also directed against national minorities” (Budanovic 7). This explains who was targeted by Stalin’s agents - anyone who could have the knowledge of how to, or the idea, take control of the country from him. By targeting Russia’s critical thinkers, he was eliminating ‘threats’ to his power, and removing dangerous people with dangerous minds from the public eye. Placing the blame on foreigners, by taking the minories residing in Russia, turned the loyal Stalinists against other nationalities, keeping the facts of the arrests relatively contained.
Fearing that his intention was to use this army to disband the National Assembly or to turn upon the citizenry, the common people began making preparations to defend themselves by collecting weaponry. To this end they stormed the Bastille, a prison in Paris, seized it, and decapitated its governor (a scene also portrayed in A Tale of Two Cities, albeit with fictional characters created by Dickens playing pivotal roles). This act became a symbol of the revolution to the French people. What would become known as the Great Fear swept the rural parts of the nation, as the peasantry begun to suspect that the aristocracy plotted to starve them and that thus armed themselves and attacked their homes, frequently burning them down, alongside the papers that bound them to paying legal fees. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was drafted by the assembly in the August of 1789, and it was this declaration that France’s first constitution, written in 1781, was based
The texts says, “ Yes, I’ve heard how the queen attacked you,” (Meyer 375). This exemplifies that Levana is very feared on Earth. However they should also know that Levana will turn her wrath against the whole country if she doesn’t get what she wants. The author wrote, “And risk Levana turning her wrath against his entire country” (Meyer 383). This is a excellent point that illustrates Levana’s true colors, kill and
In fact, we saw in this story that the main who is a young soldier kills his father due to the pressure of his duty. Then, the author wants to demonstrate that duty is more significant than family during war time. 8. How did you react when the identity of the horseman was revealed? When the identity of the horseman was revealed, my first reaction was surprised because I realize that Druse kills his own father and I understood why every kinds of war are destructive for family relationships.
as well as the ministers. They confiscated the lands and gave them to the peasants to eliminate aristocracy. In order to build up and strengthen the centralization of government, Shi Huangdi embarked on an ambitious campaign of standardizing currency and weights and measures. The laws were strict and harsh in this unified empire. Death was the penalty for any corruption by the government servants.
It was these two perspectives which, among the obvious revolutionary conflict, spurred yet another conflict. For those for and against the revolution, there lied, ironically, another revolution. Almost as if the revolution were a totalitarian French government within itself, the revolution caused people to grow power hungry in the story and could be seen in many instances. So extreme was this to an extent that if anyone opposing the revolution or even thought to be was found, they would have been killed on the spot. This war, like many others, caused those victim to it to dedicate the full capacity of their minds to the conflict, free of influence from any morals previously held dear.
The Avox is also a strong example of both, restricted information and complete surveillance. The Capitol wants to scare people by making the “traitors” live but in a humiliating way. Cutting their tongues and making them slaves sends a message to all citizens of
Witchcraft in Salem brought out the true colors in Abigail Williams and everyone in the community with how they reacted to the situation. The same thing happened with McCarthyism but it only brought out McCarthy’s bad side and the citizens good side in the McCarthy era. With having the fear of either communism or witchcraft come into your city the emotion of fear takes over everyone. An example of fear rising in a city would be communism trying to take over America and then an “obscure US senator” rises and tries to fix the communism problem but then only makes it worsts. Everyone is impacted with fear no matter how they deal with this emotion it doesn’t go away unless you find where the problem is coming from, for instance the acustions in both The Crucible and the McCarthy era both started with one person telling a
Even though, one of the biggest changes is that the tyrant Creón now is a dictator even more perverse and cruel than in “Antigone”. Moreover, in the act of love and loyalty to her friends Antígona is considers a traitor to the city and the punishment for this is death unless she confesses to her crimes. Previously, Antígona challenges the government and Creón himself when she buries the two brothers Tavares in their own land. They were supposed to be exposed to the public eye as a warning for everyone who dare to defy Creón’s dictatorship. One of the best traits of Antígona is her stubbornness and strength of her heart to not let anyone manipulate her in her way to the true goal which is to see justice.
As soon as she heard Macbeth’s prophecy, she was willing to do anything to get him into the position of king. She was even willing to aid in the murder of innocent people who stood in the way of Macbeth’s ascension to the crown like, King Duncan. Her greed led to Macbeth’s downfall. When Macbeth stated that he was questioning his intentions to kill the king, she pushed him and assisted in the plotting. “We will proceed no further in this business.
Casey’s death was a direct result of how those in authority abuse their power and use violence to suppress any type of configuration that tries to take a stand. This was a prime illustration where the struggle for power and desire for wealth exceeds the compassion and concern for human beings. Jim Casey’s murder was considered a cautionary tail, a warning of what will become of those who chose to act in rebellion , express their concerns and most importantly fail to accept their position as lower class and essentially be treated as animals. ****Moreover, the death of Rose of Sharon’s baby in The Grapes of Wrath was a visual representation of what the Joad family had been through after the realization that there was no hope for new beginnings in a world as corrupt as this one trying your best to not fall into the evils of this world and where doing anything you can to not sacrifice your own dignity was
Macbeth 's decisions to murder changed his whole way of life negatively. His first murder was what changed it all. Duncan the ex king of Scotland, was his first victim. In order to become king, Macbeth’s final decision was that he would have to kill Duncan to become King. Decisions can have a bad or good consequence in your life.
Communist Russia, made the county corrupted and changed Russia completely. This was because Vladimir Lenin became a tyrant that used terror and violence, to make people listen. There are many ways that he can be proved as a tyrant, but the three main ways that he was a tyrant was his propaganda, the five year plans that he created, and how he purged Russian citizens and he sentenced many to the death sentence. Propaganda is a tool that will send a message to the public, without necessarily telling the public the actual details. This can be used in many different ways, and can manipulate people in subtle ways that can change a country.
We learn about how her life changed, when her community overthrew The Shah and the Regime took over. The Regime was a new form of totalitarianism, that would cause more chaos than The Shah ever did. Although, the people won the first battle against The Shah, their attempts to overthrow the Regime were quickly shut down. As a result, the people lived in a suppressed community, that not only feared it government, but was in constant danger from the war. Marjane’s incredible story kept me constantly engaged and always kept me on my toes.
On their way to prison, Rosa Luxemberg and the other leaders were brutally murdered despite their instructions. Another large extremist group was the Kapp Putsch, they stood for fascism in 1920. When they attacked Ebert could not use the army as many members on the Kapp Putsch were ex-members. So with the army out of commission, Ebert called a General strike from the people. This broke the Kapp Putsch’s power and allowed Ebert and the other democratic leaders to return from hiding.
