One would think a coach would have a semi decent relationship with their players; however that was not the case with Coach Mel Thompson and the Citadel basketball team. Throughout the memoir, My Losing Season by Pat Conroy, it is evident Mel gave everyone on the team, including Pat a difficult time. Mel’s behavior towards the team helped Pat improve himself not only as an athlete, but as a person and writer. “If Pat scores one or two points a game and runs the team well, we can’t ask any more from him this year”, is not something a supportive coach would say about one of their players. Mel Thompson is not exactly the supportive coach on this team. Mel was hard on the team, especially on Pat. He did not think that Pat would ever have what it took to be a great point guard so, Mel would repeatedly out him down. After hearing what Mel had said about him, Part tried even harder to prove that he could do more than what was expected. He did this by continuously scoring in the double digits. Pat did so well that he was not included in the harsh lecture that Mel gave after a game. …show more content…
Mel Thompson was a man that barely knew what feelings were and he coached his team without caring about their feelings. This often made Pat emotional because he would let all the harsh things that Mel said get to him. He finally got fed up with letting Mel trample over his emotions and said to himself, “I would never listen to a single thing that Mel Thompson said to me again. I would obey him and honor him and follow him, but I would not let him touch the core of me again. He was my coach, but I was my master.” After being emotionally hurt by his father and then by his coach, Pat made a decision to not let someone affect his feelings and it is a decision that will surely strengthen him for years

Kierra Jordan February 23, 2017 Patricia Sue Head Summit left her mark on Earth as one greatest coaches to ever coach the game of basketball. In her 64 years of living, she created a legacy, dynasty, and was the epitome of success in women’s basketball. I would say Summitt was the chosen one since she was hired as the head coach of the University of Tennessee women’s basketball organization in 1974, the same year graduated college with her bachelor’s degree. She remained as the head coach for the Lady Volunteers for the next 38 years before retiring in 2012 due to being diagnosed with dementia.
To explain further, no one who does not love their players would coach for as long as the great man Eddie Rake did and go and see a player while they lie in the hospital hurt. Eddie Rake inspires and teaches all his players to act as hard workers and to never give up which change their lives. For example, when sheriff Mal Brown was off at Vietnam holding on to his life under a boat, he imagines his great Coach Rake telling him to not give up which ends up saving his life. Eddie Rake supports his players decisions and personalities through it all. In more detail, he accepts Nat Sawyer for being gay
Justin Vega P.4 What’s the first thing you think about when you hear the name National Football League? It might be the Super Bowl, or the Jaguars, or if you’re like me, The Lombardi trophy. The Lombardi trophy is named after the greatest NFL coach to ever live and coach the game, Vince Lombardi. Lombardi coached arguably one of the best teams in the history of football, the 1960’s Green Bay Packers.
How He Came to Be Phil Jackson was raised in a farm community in North Dakota by parents who were both Pentecostal ministers and very strict practitioners of their faith. He explains in his book, Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success (2013), that after growing up with such rigid rules and guidelines, he has taken an opposite approach as an adult and has become much more easy going and relaxed (p.15). He wrote about his search for spiritual grounding where he studied many different religions and their practices throughout his years in college. After combining many of them together he came up with his own set of beliefs and practices that provides him with the foundation he felt he needed all along (p. 15).
Herb Brooks was an American Ice Hockey player and coach. Although he was a great player, people will always remember him for his coaching style. Herb Brooks was an incredible leader; he saw in his teams what many could not see. In the 1980 Winter Olympics, Herb Brooks put together a team of college kids to take on the best hockey team in the world, The Soviet Union. This dramatic win was dubbed the “Miracle on Ice” and is still remembered as one of the greatest moments in sports history.
Within thirty-eight seasons of coaching, her players made their impact around the world due to her prominent influence. She held a standard of her players which was higher than any other coach as she was envisioned as the toughest coach in college basketball. Candace is never humble while discussing the ways that Summitt altered her life by guiding her how to not only lead her team, but how to lead her family. To this day, Parker continues to remark on the reputable works of Pat Summitt. With her passing just a year ago, hours before Candace Parker took the court to defeat a fellow WNBA team, it was evident that the difference Pat had on not only Candace, but the world, far extended the game of basketball.
Loss is “a losing by defeat; failure to defeat” (dictionary.com). There are many definitions, but in sports losing is the worst incident that can happen to a team. Pat Conroy discovers what it means to lose in his memoir My Losing Season. The memoir covers Conroy’s experiences as a young boy growing up in the South in the 1960s and as a basketball player for The Citadel, a military college in South Carolina. After The Citadel, Conroy decided to pursue his career as an author and chose to write about his senior year of college.
Discovery Famous football coach, Tony Dungy, is consistently a man of honor and strength throughout his book “Quiet Strength”. His book is a memoir of his life which captures his discovery of what it means to be a Godly leader and how to live it out both on and off the field. With his son 's tragic suicide, and media fiascos with players, Tony discovers that listening to God and who he has put in our lives will give him peace and wisdom. Tonys upbringing set him up for a lifetime of possibilities which allowed him to go farther than most. I connected most with how Tony handled his son’s suicide, he handled it in a manner I wish i could and would have.

How does one live with oneself knowing they are the reason for killing an innocent boy? In Bleachers, John Girsham, Eddie Rake did not intentionally kill Scotty Reardon; he is still the primary reason for his death. Rake got so caught up in winning, and with football he did not care how brutal, or long, the practices were. After Scotty’s death, Rake would spend the rest of his life regretting killing Scotty, and how he treated the rest of his boys. For the rest of his life, Eddie Rake would work hard to have the people of Messina forgive him, and to forgive himself.

Do you like to read sports book then this is your book to read, filled with action and tons of problems and sports events. I am reading the book Full Court Press by Mike Lupica this book is about a group of boys that live in downtown Chicago. The boys that are on the basketball team are always trying to do their best during the games. Unfortunately the coach is kind of a grumpy old coach that doesn’t like how the team works together and wants things done his way, also he loves to swear at the kids there isn’t a point in the book where he’s not happy with what they have done. In this journal I will be predicting, connecting, and questioning to what’s going on in the story.
The desire to win in leadership sets a context where true beneficial aspects and lessons are learnt and taught. The lessons cover ethical principles and aspects of responsibility, respect, caring, fairness, and trustworthiness. These styles are based on the film Remember the Titans.’ The backdrop in the film presents itself in football and racism which are the aspects that clash with the leadership styles. Coach Herman Boone’s leadership styles manifest themselves based on his upbringing which provides a tough exterior.
We see people getting hate mail, getting it told to their faces, and behind closed doors. When the coach found out his family was getting death threats and hate male he could have easily just been like I can't take this and bench the black kids but it took courage to keep the black kids playing. Also, the kids get yelled at and beaten they could have gone home and went back to work but what good would that have done. As you can see this team and people related to this team went to hell and back cause they had a minority of white boys. They had to have courage from the very first game to the national championship game.
