The mountainous interior of the island is surrounded on all sides by a wide coastal plain. Puerto Rico also includes the islands of Vieques (51.7 sq. mi.) (135 sq. km.), and Culebra (10 sq. mi.) (26 sq. km.), approximately 17 miles (27 km.) to the east. Portions of both these islands were used by the United States Navy for training for more than 50 years, but training exercises have now ceased and Navy lands have been returned to the Puerto Rico government.
