How can so few baskets of bread and fish feed hundreds?’ And Santa Claus never once visited our house” (Choy 23). Everyone is familiar with myths and legends. They are read to children by teachers. The stories of battles, immortal beings, ghouls and monsters that are out there to catch people and the ever-successful hero that always saves the day. These stories have been around for many centuries, told even before the first paintings were painted and first books were written. People’s beliefs have all derived from these old stories, as they bring hope to those in despair and inspiration to those lacking ideas. Myths and legends can be seen in all cultures

Where do myths come from? What is their function and what do they mean? In A Short History of Myths, Karen armstrong introduces the array of approaches used to understand the study of myths. Armstrong provides various stories about myth meanings and it functions in our lives by introducing different time periods. The concept of myth is central to all cultures because it lives in our stories and every culture in human history has created its own mythologies to understand how the universe works. Myths still have the same meaning no what matter how much people start to evolve and understand the way of life differently. One can experience isolation or detachment from society solely based upon something that makes of a person such as gender, skin color, social status, or personal beliefs. When one is alienated from a population, it mainly reflects on that culture or society 's values itself. A runaway slave named Jim in the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, is simply isolated from society based upon his race during the Civil War and Reconstruction era. Jim’s detachment from others reflects upon the moral values of many whites such as the dehumanization of race, the insensitivity towards slaves, and taking advantage of one’s vulnerability.

The Epic of Gilgamesh is the first epic poem to be written in ancient West Asia. It was written around the third millennium BCE in Mesopotamia by Sumerian people (Spodek, 127). Ashurbanipal, the last Neo-Assyrian king who was literate, built a great library in his capital and preserved 20,000 tablets including the earliest complete version of The Epic of Gilgamesh (Spodek, 128). Sumerian attitudes towards gods, friendship, and the story of the great flood are revealed throughout the epic.

The mission of the social work profession is deeply-rooted in a set of core values. The core values are encompassed by social workers throughout our profession 's history, are the foundation of a social worker 's distinct purpose and perception. These value are service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, the importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. This group of core values reflects what is unique to the social work profession.

A muckraker is what is considered today an investigative journalist. In Sinclair’s case, he is considered a muckraker because he “wanted to investigate the meat-packing industry” in order to write about the working class, especially the immigrants working in them. As he began his investigation, however, he discovered dirty and unhealthy conditions in a workplace with unsafe standards. The applicable theme would be Culture and Society (CUL) because although he speaks about the working class and work conditions, he focuses on society as a whole. He writes “The Jungle” to describe to them the dirty, “unhealthy conditions, and general absence of meaningful safety standards in the workplace”. It is centered around the ideas and beliefs of proper work and health conditions.

The two main oldest epic tales in the world, ‘Epic of the Gilgamesh’ and Homer’s ‘Iliad’ deals with many significant issues that pose a meaning in the life of an individual and communities. The Epic of Gilgamesh was written 1500 years before Homer wrote the Iliad. It tells the story of mighty hero Gilgamesh, the hero king of Uruk, and his adventures. The Iliad is an epic poem written in the mid-8th Century BCE. It describes the main events in the final weeks of the Trojan War and the Greek siege of the city of Troy. The wrath of Achilles, themes of glory and fate are portrayed in the subject matter of the epic.

In colonial America, written documents were one of the few primary sources of this time. All the way back to John Winthrop’s “A Model of Christian Charity’’ in the 1630’s. Winthrop’s sermon shows how the only way their colony will succeed is through God. Jonathan Edwards sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” shows people how powerful God is and what he capable of doing. George Washington shows that honesty, respect, and self-discipline are all values that colonial people live off of to survive in their new environment. The tombstone of Benjamin Franklin’s parents is a good example of how a life was in Colonial America. When reading these four primary sources, the values of each time period seem to differ but have a common similarity.

Have you ever wondered if religion was connected to culture? Religion is connected to culture. It is connected in so many ways. It is connected in the Maurya empire when Asoka turned into a Buddhist. It was also connected in the Gupta empire when they started expanding literature and developed the decimal system. It was highly connected in both empires started to promote peace and prosperity.

There are many concepts I learned in this Human Services course, but there are three main concepts I consider the most significant. I learned about the process of having a values in order to guide vision and mission statements, the significance of the locus of control, and the different way people may react to change.

Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”. Beowulf is a hero who helped Hrothgar and Hrothgar’s towns people by defeating Grendel and Grendel’s mother. Harry Potter is a hero when he protects his friends and Hogwarts. Beowulf and Harry Potter have similarities and differences so their values teach the reader about society.

The post office was experiencing serious economic turmoil and overall poor performance and as a result, the change generators ventured into a process of change management. Change management according to Lewin's Change Management Model states “Change Management is a broad discipline that involves ensuring change is implemented smoothly and with lasting benefits, by considering its wider impact on the organization and people within it.
