The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is set in the 21st century, and is about a twelve year old half-blood boy named Percy Jackson who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia. His father Poseidon, the god of the sea abandoned him before he was born so he would not be exposed to any danger. Percy is always getting into trouble and has to switch schools multiple times in the story. Zeus, the father of Ares, the god of war and Sparta finds out that his lightning bolt is stolen and Percy is the main suspect. After he and his two friends, Grover the satyr, and Annabeth, daughter of Athena, reach Camp Half Blood, he is sent on a quest to return the god of the sky Zeus' master bolt. One example of support for the claim is when Jack Torrence is having a dream after discovering the blood and bits in the Presidential suite from a gang fight years prior, where he believes that he is killing an intruder of the hotel with a mallet, but as he threw the mallet down, “the face below him was not of the intruder but of Danny’s. It was the face of his son. Then the mallet crashed home, closing his eyes forever. Suddenly Jack awoke standing over Danny’s bed, his fists clenched tightly.”
Percy Jackson and the lightning thief is about the offspring of poseidon and a mortal, going on a quest with his friends to find Zeus’ missing lightning bolt. The bolt went missing and Percy Jackson is accused of taking it. This is an excellent book that was made into a film. Though the film was good it was very different from the book.

In the novel The Book Thief written by Markus Zusak, Liesel Meminger’s life is in the middle of the Holocaust. After unfortunate events, Liesel is shown moving to a foster home in Molching, Germany. Her life changes completely as it was never before. Liesel Meminger, Max Vandenburg, and Rudy Steiner all go through different types of adversities and they find ways to overcome them.
Percy Jackson, the main character in The Lightning Thief ,is following the path of the hero in “Hero’s journey” On Percy’s life a teacher has become his mentor. In the Lightning Thief Percy says “But Mr.Brunner expected me to be as good as everybody else, despite the fact that I have dyslexia and attention deficit disorder and I had never made above a C- in my life” In this quote, percy expresses his feelings on how he is frustrated with himself and his teacher. In hero's journey a quote shows about mentors, “Heroes are almost started on their journey by a character who has mastered the laws of the outside world and come back to bestow this wisdom upon them.” That is how The Lightning Thief is compared to hero's journey.
“The Lightning Thief” is a current Greek mythology by Rick Riordan. Percy Jackson has the characteristics of a Greek hero because he is, after all, a demigod. He goes on an unknown journey after his mother who is captured, retrieve the master bolt and return the helmet back to Hades. As he goes on a journey to complete a heroic quest while on his way he faced a couple challenges along his way to save the world from a horrendous war. Thus, this shows that Percy Jackson is an archetypal hero because he possesses courage and selflessness.

Markus Zusak's The Book Thief explores the complexities of human nature through his use of setting, symbols and characters. Different characters possess different qualities based on their experiences. Symbols are used to illustrate both the beauty and the ugliness in humanity. Also, in the novel, the setting in which the character is raised has either a negative or positive effect on the characters actions.
Growing as a Character Every event in our lives happens for a reason, whether it is to learn from our mistakes or to gain experience from them. In Markus Zusak's novel “The Book Thief,” Liesel Meminger uses her experiences with living in the 1940s to learn life lessons and experience first hand the many terrible things Hitler is doing to people around her. She learns how to deal with the many obstacles that are thrown at her. Liesel grows as a character by following her step-father’s footsteps in being a kind and generous person, going through childhood with her best friend Rudy, and being aware of what is going on around her by learning from Max.

Through application of Joseph Campbell’s Hero Cycle, Percy’s development as a leader over the course of “The Lightning Thief” can be analyzed (Campbell). Percy is born into the hero’s cycle at his natural birth and his call to adventure is the attack by Mrs. Dodds. Percy crosses the threshold, when he leaves Montauk with his mother and Grover and the first trial testing his leadership is on the bus with the furies. Trials exemplifying Percy’s growth include: the furies, Medusa, the Saint Louis Arch, the “Waterland” Waterpark, the Lotus Hotel, Crusty’s Waterbed Palace, and Hades and the Underworld.
