Why were the Lithuanians treated like slaves; why did the community allow the Lithuanians to be treated in this horrible manner? Ruta Sepetys wants to teach us to stick to who we are and to not change for anyone, just because of your nationality. Ruta Sepetys, I am writing to you about Lina. I was wondering how you came up with a character like her? Also, how did you make her character feel so realistic? The book Between Shades of Grey changed me because it showed me to always stay true to yourself. It showed me to help each other especially in bad times. There are four people in Lina’s family . She helps people, and cares for them. She is an amazing person to everyone. She shares her rations of food and puts other first before herself. Elena physically helps people. For example in my book she helped a woman named Ona when she gave birth to a baby girl. She even helped people when the soldiers spoke to them in Russian. Elena understood what they were saying, so she helped everyone to understand. When Elena was sick she tried not to show it because she wanted to be strong for everyone. Even when people were being arrogant she helped them anyway. She told them what they were saying was not nice and rude. When people turned over to the soldiers Elena still had faith that they were good. Elena is an amazing person with a unique passion to help someone no matter who they are. The book Between Shades of Grey changed me because it showed me to always stay true to yourself. It showed me to help each other especially in bad times. This book is about a fifteen year old girl whose family is taken. Lina’s family cared for everyone even if they were being obnoxious.They helped everyone whether they knew them or not.Lina’s family had open arms to everyone they met.
