In the article “Want To Get Into College? Learn To Fail” by Angel B. Perez the main idea was that colleges want to know the real you,the imperfect you not the just the great things you’ve accomplished over the year ,but also the failure you had to overcome. The reason why they want to know this is to see if you can overcome failing a class or two just to how you can you handle this, because life is not easy and healthy,family and money sometimes can get in the way of things but the goal is to make you succeed. Another thing I learned that I think is a main point is that parents are the ones pressuring their children to be perfect. So much that they didn 't want their child to take a risk in a class if there was a possibility for failure.
Failure may be upsetting, in contrast to this failure may lead to success. Mary Sherry explained this to be true in her passage “In Praise of the “F” Word”. “But fear of failure, whether economic or academic, can motivate both.” She believes that with the conscience of failure, people are more likely to strive to perform better. I myself believe this proclamation is true in every aspect of life.
The Greek Philosopher Aristotle identified “The years between puberty and age twenty-one as the formative time for mind and character.” It was customary for young Greek men to attend a series of lectures that resembled our notion of a college “course”(Delbanco 36). Aristotle is a believer of education and the power it has on the development of the young mind. Likewise, he believes college is a place to establish one’s character. Caroline Bird’s essay, “Where College Fails Us,” definitely does not correlate with the opinion of Aristotle.
Summary In Andrew Delbanco's essay, College At Risk, he talks about college education in America and at some different points, he compares them to other countries education systems. In the beginning of his essay, the basis of American college education is discussed, and how furthering your education past high school helps us become productive adults. It is also mentioned how college is a place to expand your knowledge and critical thinking skills. It is pointed out that other countries may have a better education system and possibly outperform the U.S. when it comes to certain jobs.
According to Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill, in their essay Should Everyone Go to College?, claim that the return of investment from going to college depends on the degree, institution, and how long a student stays in college. There is a different return of investment for each different degree. For example, according to the graph on page 215, Engineering is paid more than education. Therefore a student attending college for an engineering degree would have a greater return of investment then a student attending college for a degree in education. The return of investment is also dependent on the kind of institution a student attends.
A lot of students who fail a class or get a subpar grade tend to beat themselves up and sulk over their failure. If a student fails a class, the student shouldn’t let the failure determine or define their future in that certain subject or class. The situation that I will be talking about in this multi-media rhetorical narrative is what I learned from my last track meet. Going into the end of the season of my senior year, I was ranked in the top 10 for discus throwers in the state. When the state meet came I was expected to come in fourth place or better. That meet turned out to be one of my worst meets of the year and I performed much worse than expected. As a result, I did not qualify for the regional meet and my season was over.
In today’s society, many people choose to not work hard in school and become dropouts. But does their academic failure really define their personal value? Failure is not always a bad thing, we can always learn from our failures and prevent it from happening again. Many people have the same ideas and their work really inspired a lot of people. For example, the author Mary Sherry uses parallel structure and personal experiences in her essay “Praise of the F Word” to show that failing is not always a bad thing, and when I relate to my own failures, I felt the powerful mood within her essay.
The Pursuit of Grades Over Happiness There are many accomplishments that we have achieved, yet many to achieve, and the race towards them never seems to stop. Well, this is the case for many students because the race towards achieving high grades never comes to an end. Grades are meaningless in the grand scheme of things, as they do not control the rest of your life, but yet are still overly looked upon and can affect a student’s life drastically. However, a poet once said, “Life is not a race, but a journey, to be savored each step of the way” (Nancye Sims).
Doing what I love and being able to support myself and loved ones is important to me. I am a very independent person and I like to do things my way. I like to set individual goals everyday, whether that means doing my homework before a certain time, or completing something for the week. They help me get my work done on time and efficiently.
Baseball has always been called a game of mistakes. When you are batting you fail more often than not. You are considered a great player if you succeed only a third of the time. Yet to succeed, you must move past your failure and forget about it. When in the field you are likely to make an error at some point, it happens to everyone, it's about clearing your mind and moving on.
In today's society, a students' life revolves around the fact they need good grades to achieve greatness. A student's life is mainly consumed by grades, and how to attain higher grades. Students spend all of his/her time studying to get into prestigious schools of their choosing. Students do certain extracurricular activities only if it will look good on their résumé, which increases their chance of getting into a better program. A student can clear his/her agenda and have time for themselves, and join activities they want by managing their time better.
