Memory, symbol, and pattern are all key parts to make a successful novel, especially if the piece of literature is complex. Memory helps a reader relate to a character or moment, which gives a story emotion and gives it an impact. An impactful story is a story that a reader will think about, which can help a reader understand or want to read more. Symbols adds depth and imagery to a story. They add depth by providing people or objects that mean something, which builds onto making the literature memorable.
The main reason literary devices are used is to connect with the reader. When we read, we want to truly enjoy what is written we need to become a part of the story. And literary devices help us to better see and feel the storyline. A good storyline captures all of our senses, these devices draw the reader in, paint a picture, heighten the senses, and pull at us emotionally. Throughout Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story The Birthmark, some of the key literary devices used were irony symbol and theme.
As I was reading Melissa Duffy’s “Inspiration, and Craig Vetter’s “Bonehead Writing,” I found myself connecting with Vetter’s paper more than Duffy’s. I found that the presentation in “Bonehead Writing” to capture my attention, and that Vetter’s feelings about writing was similar to my opinion on writing. Through his wording and humor, I think Craig Vetter wrote the best essay. I find that the wording and presentation of an article or essay influences my opinion of the writer, and it affects how I receive the idea they are trying to present to me. Craig Vetter uses a blunt approach to convey his idea that writing is nearly impossible to teach, and describes writing as “A blood sport, a walk in the garden of agony every time out.” He presents writing as an arduous task that no one can ever perfect, and he presents this view in a harsh light that makes you realize that what he says is a cold hard truth, that you suck at writing, and that there is next to nothing that you can do to change that.
Literary devices are used by an author to enhance a story. These devices can help to make a piece more descriptive, complex and thrilling. Literary devices can also help the reader further understand the text. Conflict, characterization, and imagery are exemplary examples of literary devices used by authors. Conflict is one of the most essential literary devices.
Thesis: The effective use of literary elements are crucial to enhance the understand of readers and provide them with the suspense that the author intends to create by reading the story. Every successful and effective story possess certain qualities, which when put together result in an enticing, suspense filled story. When used skillfully, these literary elements produce some of the world’s most renowned works. “Just Lather, That’s All” is no different. Hernando Tellez effectively uses the literary elements setting, point of view, and symbolism in his work to create suspenseful story.
Diction refers to the choice of words used by a writer in relation to the tone and the point the writer wants to get across. Often times effective diction involves the use of potent words. King used diction within his speech through attention-grabbing words like “oppression,” “withering,” “refuse,” and “tranquilizing.” A strong choice of words eludes to a stronger and larger impact upon the audience (“Martin”). Effective speeches and works of literature use a multitude of devices and techniques. Writers use these devices in order to deliver a specific message to the targeted audience in a way that is memorable.
I decided to pursue option B of project three because I enjoy writing creatively and Kooser’s piece was very interesting to me. Upon starting this project, I was influenced by Kooser’s “The Wheeling Year.” I admire how he makes different stanzas to introduce different ideas and I try to mimic this technique. My text qualifies as creative nonfiction in its own right because I use my sense to create vivid descriptions, I use stanzas to separate my ideas, and I write not only about my “place” but also my thoughts, which allows me to not only tell, but show you a place that’s very special to me. I use very descriptive images in order to not only tell but show my special place. By carefully picking out the words I write, it allows the reader to picture my place how I see it.
In the Raymond Carver stories “Cathedral” and “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” communication plays a major role in developing the story. In this essay I will analyze how the theme of communication plays both similar and different roles in developing the meaning of these two stories to further understand how communication effects the characters. Communication is an important part of the story to understand because it gives the reader a better understanding of the moral of the story as well as important life influences of the author. “Cathedral” and “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” are excellent to stories to compare their theme of communication because communication gives each story a unique meaning, but both stories use communication in different ways to do so. By exploring the different types of communication in these two stories it will be easier to understand the moral meaning of the stories but also how different types of communication can be more effective than verbal communication.
The author uses words that greatly describe the tone and mood to a point that it becomes life like and a natural part of this piece. As the author speaks his voice and meaning allow the reader to immerse himself in Buck’s life. In their Introduction to the “They Say /I Say” book, Gerald Graff and Cathy Brikenstein strongly believe that their templates will improve the reader’s writing skills. Graff and Brikenstein insist that writing is just like an activity we are used to do continuously, and if we follow certain process, we improve our writing and “help [our] writing become more original and creative.” (11) The authors also added that writers must give the opposing argument (they say) and then comes the thesis, which “should always be a response to the arguments of others.” (4) Personally, I agree with most of the points that the authors argued about. I personally found the templates the offered in the Introduction and in the first chapters helpful. In addition,
I often imagine myself as the character of the stories and try to figure out what I would do if I was the character in real life. It is because of reading that it helped develop my interest in writing and journaling, which is enjoyable for me. Just like reading, writing is a great way for me to unwind. The Elements of A Good Story What makes a good story? Oftentimes writers encounter questions like this and start to wonder about the writing essentials of a good story. As many skills and beautiful words that make up a captivating story, it will have to be one that makes connections to the readers. Only when readers are able to make a connection to their experience or values, they start gaining from the story. Through creating conflicts, conveying the theme and a relative background, the writers of “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “Sonny’s Blues” fully express their values and thoughts by the “bridge” between readers and them.
