Majority of people would agree that it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to become a professional athlete. Some would say that if you work that hard to become a professional athlete, you should be paid just as much as everyone else. Even saying that gender shouldn’t decide how much you are being paid, that there should be an even salary for male and female athletes that compete in the same sport. Regardless of the amount of revenue brought in, female athletes should not be paid as much as male athletes. Female athletes are the main group behind this protest for female athletes to receive an equal amount of pay that the male athletes are receiving. The main argument these female athletes are using to try and get their pay grades up, is …show more content…
In an article by Gidget Alikpala, she states that the WNBA has lost an average of $10 million a year since it was founded, and that the NBA subsidizes their losses. Even though the WNBA is losing so much money every year, they are still trying to find ways to pay their players more. In 2022 the base salary is now $130,000, not including bonuses or extra initiatives. “This increase could mean even bigger subsidies from the NBA, if the WNBA does not find a way to become more profitable”(Alikpala). Because the WNBA loses so much money and still wants to increase their salaries, the NBA has to give up some of their revenue money. This alone shows that males deserve to make more money than the females because their revenue pays to keep the females league up and running. If females in the WNBA want equal pay to males in the NBA, they should train harder to improve the competition and improve the speed of the game. For example if you go to a girls high school basketball game compared to a boys, there are almost twice the amount of people at the boys game. This is because the boys' games are more fast paced and more enjoyable to watch. So if these athletes want a change, they need to change something with the style or play of the game. They can then sell more tickets which then leads to selling more …show more content…
Soccer Association than the men’s team. For a while they were getting paid significantly less than the men even though they brought in more money and won more games. People were livid that they were not being paid equal. But the thing was that the competition level between the men and the women were completely different. The women's team were getting easy wins while the men's competition was far more superior than them. In 2017 the women’s team scrimmages a U-15 boys academy from Dallas to prepare for two games coming up against Russia. The women’s team ended up losing 5-2. If the women gave up 5 goals and lost to a group of 15 year old men, why should they get paid an equal amount to 20-25 year old
This amount does not have to be tens of thousands but could just be hundreds on top of everything the athletes get now. If you set the football cap at 3 million and basketball at 650,000 thousand that would still not equal the amount that a lot of coaches of major programs make so it is affordable according to Nocera. If you take some of the money programs spend on facilities to try and recruit players that war and spend it on the salary cap it is affordable and could happen without breaking the bank. Nocera also agrees with Wilbon because he thinks an athlete should be able to use the Olympic model to make some income if they can. Nocera also says that a players’ scholarship for the education should be available for eight years so if the player goes pro and gets hurt and cannot play or does not make it they can come back and get
Hala Warda Kristin McGregor English 90R 22 October 2015 Summary and Response#3: “College Athletes Should Be Paid” Ann Kaufmann’s article “College Athletes Should Be Paid” explains that because college football and men’s basketball programs are so profitable, the athletes who play them should be paid. One reason they should be paid is because they spend more time practicing than they study. For example, “college football and basketball players often spend upwards of 50 hours a week during the season at their sport” (452). Another reason is NCAA doesn’t allow players to accept any gifts money from anyone. For instance, the article states that “not surprising, college players are sometimes tempted to take money under the table” (452).
(Gerencer). Women in the WNBA work everyday to prove that they can be just as skilled as NBA players are, and that they deserve to paid a decent amount. Yet, they do not get the credit for their skills because they are considered to be boring to most people. These women deserve a paycheck that matches their abilities and efforts, not opinions on them. Thus, women who play professional basketball should have an increase in the amount they are paid because they do not get enough money despite their abilities, and the fact that they are playing at a professional
According to the article “Should College Athletes Be Paid?” Tiffany Patterson states, “The ESPN documentary Broke gave an inside view of the financial woes of many professional athletes, noting that around 60% of NBA players are broke within five years of retirement.” This is a very short period to spend the millions of dollars they get while in this career. Living in the middle class family that I live in, I know that it would personally take over ten years to spend even the yearly average of a pro-basketball player. Patterson also states, “Many of these players blamed poor investments, trusting unethical financial advisors, and lavish spending habits as the reason for their money troubles.”
For a century the National Collegiate Athletic Association has been around governing the organization for millions of college athlete. In the recent year, though, many people have been asking whether or not college athletes should be paid to play their sports in college, in particular, Division One male football and basketball players. The Paying of college athletes concept is in its resolution and plan, however the history of this issue dates back two decades and has proven both ineffective and discriminatory. The negative inherency of this new potential solution would far outweigh any minute advantages that the opposition will attempt to present as a positive change.
Therefore many college athletes are forced to pay out of pocket for certain items not covered on scholarship such as clothes, food, and gas. This is hard for many college athletes since themselves or their parents do not have the money for the extra items. A selected few athletes will get a chance to bring their family out of poverty and make a great living in either the NBA or the NFL. But for the not so lucky ones that end their careers at the collegiate level they should receive some money in order to pay for the expenses that any college student would need to since they do not simply have the time to get a part time job while enrolled in college and participating in their specific sport. The benefits that the players can receive from receiving a salary are endless.
Clearly, this is why the WNBA should get paid as much as men do. A second reason why the WNBA should get paid more is that women’s sports don’t get as nearly as
Title IX was meant to order change in American education by illiminating discrimination on gender, but instead it still has problems and could use some improvement. One of the main splits between men and women athletics is the pay gaps between the two sexes. The salary difference between the United States Mens and Womens National Teams proves this. For example, “Each player on the USWNT earns $99,000 per year provided the team wins 20 “friendlies” (exhibition matches), the minimum number of matches they would play. By contrast, each men’s player would earn $263,320 for the same feat and would still earn $100,000 if the team lost all 20 games,” (Walters 3).
College athletes can make profit off of their names, the program and all of the money they make and the athletes education this is why college athletes should be paid. College athletes should be able to make a profit off of their image and names and likeness because they don’t know what their future holds for them and honestly they could not have a future after college so the programs should pay them just so they don’t have to worry about everything. Another reason why college athletes shouldbe paid is because the programs they go to get alot of money after each game and each year, the athletic department of the NCAA made around 18.9 billions dollars and none of that goes to any of the players all of that goes to the coaching staff and the universites itself. Last reason why college athletes should be paid is because if they don’t get paid money they should at least get paid with a very high education from there universites and should graduate with something they can be grateful and happy about. Now go and tell people that college athletes should be paid for the sport
Other people also fear that there might be some lawsuits since it’s impossible to have an across the board pay scale. Some people think that females might file a lawsuit considering they won’t be payed the same as male athletes. These prove that paying athletes would cause a lot of problems that would hinder athletes from taking their studies
This pay difference can discourage the girls that want to become professional athletes. Thus, limiting the sports available for women to play and places to play in. Professional female athletes should be paid the same amount as professional male athletes because women should have equal representation and pay as the men, women are just as successful in sports as the men, and the best players are getting paid by foreign leagues to not
Some feel this way because according to Text 2, Lines 10-15, “It’s Time to Pay College Athletes” “college athletes are mass-audience performers and need to be rewarded as such.” Student athletes spend almost 40 hours per week on their sport and the sport they play is almost like a full-time job while going to school so they should be paid for it. However, even though some people would argue this statement, college athletes should not be paid. As referred to in Text 1, college athletes accept their scholarship with no questions asked and have the choice to leave anytime they want. Once students go to college they make decisions for themselves and they know what their responsibilities are when being a college
Women in sports can compete the same, and sometimes even stronger, as men so their pay should just be as much as them, and the gender pay gap shouldn’t be present. If both sexes play the exact same sport, why do they have different fiscal values? Many female athletes are equally talented compared to men so they should at least get paid the same. “The U.S. women’s team will get a $2 million bonus for winning the FIFA Women 's World Cup. A lot of money to you and me, yes.
However, some could say that wage equality is a bad thing because it will cost too much. Women athletes should be paid the same as men athletes. If women are paid the same they will be treated the same. “The International Cricket Council funded all the men's teams to fly business class but, only paid for the women’s teams to fly economy class”(Wigmore).
Gender Inequality in sports is an issue as old as sport itself. I choose this topic because we as a society seem to sweep it under the rug time after time. Women in sports however, try to address the issue only to have it go on deaf ears, leaving them to continue in the sport hoping something will change. Over the last few decades, strides have been made, but he sport remains an institution dominated by men. These women, whether they are in sport or in the business world, want a fair chance to be on the same level as their male counterparts.
