Introduction The aim of this paper is to analyze the play known as Angels in America. This is a play whose focus is on the stories of two couples who are troubled, one couple is straight, and the other is gay couple: Mormon lawyer Joe Pitt and his wife Harper, and ‘word processor” Louis Ironson and his lover Prior Walter. The intention of the play is to show the struggle of identity, ethnicity and homosexuality therefore the essay is going to focus on the world of the play. It is a serious play about history, politics, death and spirituality (Kushner, 42).
World of the Play The play is based on the world of politics. Throughout the Angels in America play, one of the main points is that everything is politics. The play is not simply a political critique, but instead a political resistance act and a beacon of hope (Harris Ramsby, 412). While the play offers a harsh conservatism and Reagansim political critique, it is still utopian. The film’s first part does a great job of exposing issues of politics, while the film’s second part takes a more active approach in offering viewers with guidance towards possible strategies for political and social change. The play revolves around two type of marriages that is gay marriage and straight marriage, and the both worlds of marriage are troubled. After the death and burial of Louis’s grandmother prior informs his partner Louis he has

In the world of theatre, a place which tends to be reserved for liberal expression and socially progressive content, Bekah Brunstetter’s The Cake appears to be somewhat of an anomaly. This is not to say that the play condemns or lacks representation of the social matters which are so commonly highlighted in contemporary theatre. In fact, The Cake very thoroughly explores the unceasing debate surrounding the topic of marriage equality. However, Brunstetter’s thoughtful characterization forces audiences to consider a perspective that is rarely supported, or even acknowledged, on the stage.
As a result, some may feel that they have no presence in America because their expected help is nowhere to be found, once again shown by the prevalence of hardships. However, since these types of entities do exist and show their faces in the play, as seen by the Angel and ghosts, the statement is also
Within the scope of Gay rights, same-sex marriage has been widely debated as a controversial issue as to whether or not marriage is a constitutional right for all individuals. For some, the idea that same sex couples have the same matrimonial benefits as heterosexual couples has been purely a question of civil rights. Others have seen same-sex marriage as a moral question, and concluded that such union violates traditional matrimonial values based on religious beliefs. The subject matter of legal benefits and the creation of family have also been at the center of this controversial debate. In “My Amendment” by George Saunders he tries to convey his logic behind same sex marriage and how it’s perceived in society.
While reading Tartuffe, I was constantly dumbfounded by the prevalence in the world today of Moliere’s, comedically portrayed, accusations regarding ignorance in arranged marriage, social class dynamics and religious hypocrisy. Moliere created the characters to the complete contrast to what society saw them as, which was intriguing and comedic. He also displayed the average practices, such as planned marriage, to be disgraceful and shameful. Lastly, but most prevalently, Moliere saturated the hypocrisy of religion by later in the story revealing the religious character’s deceitful and malign nature. In this essay, I will be using historic and literary theory to examine Moliere’s interesting views of such practices and the satire involved.
However, while they both have the same intentions, their actions conflict heavily, and situate them on opposite sides of a matter. Because of this, there is not a clear good or evil person; almost every aspect of the playwright is up to the reader’s interpretation. But, it is not impossible to make a compromise between two people about their values, even if it seems the values could not be more

The poem “America” by Tony Hoagland dramatizes the conflict of life in America today. To many, poetry is a confusing group of words, but if the reader looks underneath the surface there is usually a deep hidden meaning of those words. In “America” the speaker is turning the words into metaphors to show the corrupted way of life Americans live. He uses key images in these metaphors to get the reader thinking. A key image is a word or phrase that doesn’t necessarily mean the literal object but instead shows characteristics of an unsaid object or idea.
Throughout the play, the characters look at faith, race, opportunities, fatherhood and

The theme of marriage is very clearly present in the play, as one of the main characters, Lady Happy, tries to avoid the pressure of having to get married by having herself and a few other women withdraw themselves from society and its strict (gender) roles, to live in more freedom. Knowing that, it would be easy to come to the conclusion that The Convent of Pleasure speaks in favor of freedom for women, and encourages them to, just like Lady Happy, refuse to satisfy the expectation of society to get married. This is, however, far from the truth, as the play eventually ends with the strong-willed Lady Happy, who was previously so adamant about remaining unmarried, being married to the prince, who despite Lady Happy’s precautions had managed to slip into the convent, disguised as a princess.
