CLASSICAL GREECE INFLUENCE ON MODERN WESTERN SOCIETY AND CULTURE
Ancient Greece is considered the cradle of modern Western culture, with significant contributions to fields such as politics, science and mathematics, art, and literature. Some of the most notable Greek contributions include the creation of democracy, the development of the alphabet, the establishment of libraries and standardized medicine, and the invention of trial by jury. Greek mythology has also had a lasting impact on popular culture, with many myths adapted into modern novels, movies, TV shows, video games, and even brands. This marked the birth of democracy since Athens was the first to practice it. The democratic government was made up of 6000 assembly members which were all male citizens of Athens. The assembly members were allowed to vote on issues, pass laws and to hold political positions. But these exclude women, slaves, and non-citizens. The western world today also practice democracy but through representatives of the larger population with women inclusive. All people (male and female) have the right to vote and to be voted for. Greece had produced many scientists and mathematicians who laid the foundation of science and mathematics. Some of the personalities who contributed greatly to the field are Archimedes who brought about modern calculus, geometrical theorems, accurate approximation of Pi and effective levers and pulleys. Eratosthenes was the first to calculate the circumference of the earth. The Athenian educational system was geared towards arts, literature, choreography, music, and dance. The theater also began in Athens with performance of tragedy plays during religious festivals. The works of Sophocles and Aristophanes formed the basis for theater today. Sculpture of the Greek culture also influenced the modern western culture largely today. Architecture
The former temple located on the Acropolis known as the Parthenon is one of the well-known Greek Architecture. The Parthenon is known for its many columns (seventeen on the sides and eight at either ends). Also, The Library of Alexandria was built in Egypt under Greek rule. Many public buildings such as churches and libraries are built with columns in modern western society. With many influential contributions how can one not admire them from philosophy, art, architecture, science, and math. The ancient Greeks were also able to accomplish this while fighting the Persian and Peloponnesian war. In philosophy there was Socrates Aristotle, and plato. Socrates created the socratic method which today is known as the scientific method which is still commonly used in science. Some of the greatest achievement in Greek were science and math from medicine, biology, physics, geometry, psychology, and astronomy.
Columns were large pillars that held up the things above it and gave support to the building. The western civilizations adapted this technique and incorporated columns in several of their architecture for example the lincoln memorial and the capital building. This was another contribution from Greek that has affected the Western
Greece DBQ Theater, government, and religion were all essential parts of ancient Greek culture. A unique trait which all of these aspects of ancient Greek society shared was progression and development. Theater progressed from simply relaying stories to tackling controversial topics which sparked discussion. Government showed growth and progression in both Sparta and Athens. Sparta developed a militaristic society which eliminated socioeconomic inequality and Athens’s monarchy evolved into a free democracy where people’s voices were heard.
In conclusion, the Ancient Greeks have influenced modern American culture in a multitude of ways. The influence of language, architecture, and theater are just three ways that show the influence that the Greeks have on us today. Ancient Greece has impacted many civilizations through philosophy, government, art and architecture. Their ideas and concepts are still widely used today and have benefited many people's lives. The Ancient Greek civilization made many contributions to the Western World. Ancient Greek philosophers have influenced areas of modern thought. Philosophy is the study of ideas, nature and the meaning of life.
Ancient Greek culture is majorly influential in Western culture. Major works of literature, art, and political structure from ancient Greece remain relevant to modern Western society. However one can contrast these two societies by observing and valuing the art of ancient Greece. One can differentiate ancient Greek culture and modern Western culture by analyzing the treatment of religious figures, attitude towards emotion, and reaction towards nudity in each society. The assembly voted on issues throughout Athens and passed laws. Our democracy in America is similar to this. Though the Greek democracy was not as polished and fair, it was still influencial to modern cultures. Something used every day, all over the world, not just in western civilization, is the alphabet. The Greeks were the first civilization to use the alphabet, and it’s usefullness spread throughout the globe.
Greece and Rome, two ancient societies, both influenced many aspects of modern life. Their advancements were utilized in many later cultures. When looking back on ancient societies, arts and politics are often scrutinized by historians, used as key sources to illuminate how the population functioned, and in many cases, thrived.
