The people of ancient Pompeii had no idea they would become part of history for having a world famous volcanic eruption. Even though the rich lived differently than the poor, in the city of Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius did not discriminate against any of its citizens. When Mount Vesuvius erupted, no one in its path survived. In the twenty feet of ash and debris, the artifacts were perfectly preserved until they were discovered in the mid 1700s. Compared to other ancient cities, Pompeii was very advanced. Pompeii was divided with walled blocks called insulae. The town had homes, apartments, and shops. Some insulae could have twelve homes. In the city there was a Forum. The Forum was a government center of business, law and religion. Pompeii 's meeting …show more content…
In the city for many years, the people of Pompeii did not know that that Mount Vesuvius (the volcano) would erupt. Even seeing smoke coming out of the volcano they still did not know what the future would hold. When Mount Vesuvius was erupting, every second 1.5 million tons of ashes and rocks shot out of the volcano. Rocks that would shoot out of the volcano would reach about twenty miles high. Researchers estimated that 1,600 people died during Vesuvius 's eruption. When Mount Vesuvius erupted, Pompeii was buried in twenty feet of ash and debris. Because of the ash, the artifacts were perfectly preserved until they were discovered in the mid 1700’s. After the eruption and when the people were discovering Pompeii, they found thirty- three bakeries. In one of the bakeries, there was an oven that still had bread in it. They found a dog with it’s collar still on and a couple that were hugging when the lava was covering them. The discoverers found mostly everything that was in Pompeii. The volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius was an amazing and terrible event. The eruption was amazing because Pompeii was barely known years before Mount Vesuvius erupted. The event was terrible because of all the deaths that happened in 79 A.D. History was transformed after the eruption in
The Holocaust, a tragic time in history. Genocide committed by the hands of Adolf Hitler and his minions. A total death of around six million Jews. Some were lucky enough to escape to a life of freedom. Each survivor has its own unique story.
The Holocaust was a huge moment in history. It impacted millions of innocent human beings because of how they looked and what they believed in. The Germans killed millions of Jews, gypsies, Romani... anyone who did not fit the mold of the perfect Arian.
People showed how well they can work in bad times by helping clean up the disaster of the twin towers. They showed how they can count on one another by setting up camps for the injured and counting on other states around us. They also show how not to be selfish by risking their lives trying to save people stuck in the rubble of the twin towers. My third example is the Holocaust. During the Holocaust people worked to gather to smuggle children out of concentration camps.
Mount St. Helens eruption - May 18th 1980 __________________________________________ INTRODUCTION Mount St. Helens is one of fifteen volcanoes located in the Cascade Range, a mountain range that extends southward from Mount Garibaldi, British Columbia, through Washington and Oregon to Lassen Peak in Northern California. The Cascade Range volcanoes, along with the Alaskan volcanoes, comprise the North-American section of the Pacific Ring of Fire (1), a long horseshoe shaped chain of volcanoes and tectonic fault lines that delineates the North Pacific ocean in its entirety and circumscribes a number of tectonic plates, including the Pacific, Cocos, Philippine, Nazca and Juan de Fuca plates and marks the perimeter of several continental plates
The Salem Witch Trials shows the perspectives around this time period and how their only knowledge was by word (www.enotes.com). Teenage boredom has massively changed compared back to this time period as well (www.enotes.com). Also from The Holocaust, museums are found today throughout the world (www.history.com). Several holocaust survivors live today and tell their stories verbally, by books, or diaries (Wiesel,). The surviving victims are looked upon as walking heros for making it through such hell after losing every possible
History is something that grows every day. Every second that passes turns into history. There are many periods of history that are thought to be special among people. These special times are caused by things that were important and caused an impact on people. The impact these things had on people usually affected the people’s way of life.
Visualize yourself peering into old buildings and trying to imagine the people who inhabited these homes, stores, schools, churches, and saloons. It’s a modern-day Pompeii, the lives of real people covered in a sheet of dust and debris left the same as when they left many years ago. A ghost town is an abandoned village, town, or city, usually one that contains substantial visible remains. A town often becomes a ghost town because the economic activity that supported it has failed, or due to natural or human-caused disasters such as floods, fires, droughts, pollution, or nuclear disasters. The term can sometimes refer to cities, towns, and neighborhoods that are still populated, but significantly less so than in years past.
Volcanoes Natural disasters Mount Vesuvius Mt. Vesuvius, a dormant volcano, is one of the most famous volcanic eruptions in history from 79 AD, located in Naples, Italy. The eruption of Pompeii and Herculaneum was devastating, ejecting large amounts of ash, mud and rocks into the air. Since its first eruption, Vesuvius has erupted at least thirty-dozen times, with eight of those eruptions being large explosive ones. Although Mount Vesuvius last significant eruption was in 1944, scientists continue to actively watch the volcano for any signals of potential activity. The most well-known eruption of Vesuvius occurred in AD 79, when it destroyed the city of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Recent discoveries convey an importance to the world’s history. However, different authors convey that idea in different ways. The passage,” New Discoveries in Ancient Egypt” by Bryan Brown and “The Curse of the Pharaohs” by Zahi Hawass suggests that any discovery is very helpful in the long run. On the other hand, “Cities of the Dead” by Denise Rinaldo tells the reader how the discoveries are not important unless you found everything about that topic. One thing all these stories do have in common is that they all share the idea that findings from the ancient times can give us a better understanding of our origins.
The purpose of history is not only to offer up fact as we know it, but to continually strive for a better interpretation of those facts. Therefore, the study of history can be as dynamic and fluid as we choose to make it. One way in which our interpretation of history can be refreshed is by meticulously studying historical sites such as the Great Pyramids of Egypt or the Terracotta Army in China. Another famous and important site for historical inquiry is the archeological site of Pompeii in Italy.
In Hawaiian Haleakala means “House of the sun.” Haleakala National Park is located in the island of Maui, Hawaii. “Maui’s two eroded volcanoes, Haleakala and West Maui, were once part of a large volcanic massif made up of six major volcanoes. When sea level was lower, during the coldest times of the Pleistocene Epoch, the six volcanoes formed one island.” Haleakala is a part of the Kea trend of volcanoes that includes West Maui, Mauna Kea and Kohala volcanoes.
The Holocaust was one of the most devastating times for all of the world. It strained the world’s economy and resources; death tolls were tremendously high and injuries were severe. This was one of the worst events in our world’s history. For the 12 years that Germany was ruled by the Nazi Party, a central belief was that there existed in society, certain people who were dangerous and needed to be eliminated for German society to flourish and survive (Impact of the Holocaust).
The Holocaust, a moment in the history of fear, survival, hiding, and death. A time of one of the most feared actions taking place globally, World War II. Many people believe that the Holocaust did not exist, but it was very, very, real indeed. The Holocaust is the most unforgettable event that all survivors could not remove from their mind, it was used as an extermination process for Jews(Allen 6). Many say that there was an alternate path that could have been taken to avoid the war, and they are correct, there were multiple ways to avoid both World War ll and the Holocaust, but humanity and society were blinded by fear and bloodthirst, they really are not to blame, it was the most brutal events in human history(Vail 9).
Everyone is familiar with the ancient Roman town of Pompeii that was destroyed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius back in AD 79. Author Edward Bulwer-Lytton used this hostorical setting as the backdrop for his 1834 novel, The Last Days of Pompeii, but was actually inspired by a painting of the same name that was created by a Russian painter named Karl Briullov. In the novel an Athenian nobleman falls in love with a Greek beauty shortly after arriving in Pompeii, but has to deal with the schemes of an Egyptian sorcerer. The book
First, the effect on people was not all that great. People were killed by rocks that fell. This phase was called the plinian eruption, it lasted nearly a day. Some people were also killed by volcanic ash and gas. Second of all, according to History.com, the city was buried by all of the ash from the volcano, dust poured across the land like a flood.
