The author Andrew Curry thinks that workers today are unfulfilled because they would rather work a job they do not like and earn more money than work a job that they are passionate about and earn less. He also talks about how people seem to work more than relax in today's age like when he says “instead of working less, our hours have stayed steady or risen.” (Curry, Kirszner and Mandell 399) the evidence that he uses to connect his view is the amount of people who complain about their jobs. Before the the industrial revolution work and family were basically the same thing. Work was based around home and the family life. After the revolution began families were taken out of the home and put into factories for mass production of goods and services. Families were split because of the demands of the factories. People had many opportunities to work during this time. Before the Industrial Revolution children usually grew up and had the same profession as their parents because that’s what their parents taught them. Once the revolution started however, children were able to work in factories, as servants, on farms and etc. During this time, a lot of technology was created but jobs were also cut down. Machines like the spinning jenny were invented, which gave factories the option to cut down on their employees.

In Schwartz’s article “Rethinking Work”, he questions the satisfaction or dissatisfaction people have with their jobs, how they feel about their wage, and their purpose as a worker. Schwartz starts off by saying that the current way the workplace runs was based on a system that was created to minimize the need for skill and close attention. The idea was that workers were only working to get paid and in layman terms were lazy. He continues to say that this approach to work is not doing what it’s supposed to do; in fact it is doing the opposite. Working in an environment where your only motive to be there is your paycheck leads to dissatisfaction and poor work performance.
The criticism a person gets can either benefit a person or hurt a person. By the early 1800’s America began transitioning from an agriculture based economy to industrial production. After Thomas Jefferson's’ Embargo Act of 1807 that cut off all exports from the United States, domestic production boomed. Americans were forced to depend solely on themselves, developing economic independence. Inventions such as Eli Whitney’s cotton gin and railroads lead to industrial production and textiles. By 1815 there were hundreds of textile mills, spurring the growth of the Lowell factory system.
Factory owners also lengthened the hours of workers shifts, to the point where employees were working over 14 hours per day, regardless of age (Source G). The Industrial Revolution caused these parents to work all day in order to have barely enough money to keep their families alive. The children never got to spend time with their parents as a result of this, and therefore did not have the chance to develop healthy relationships with them as every child should. Finally, the quality of houses and living diminished due to the industrialization. An example of this is shown in a photo of an urban tenement during the Industrialization Period, where living conditions were very cramped. There were multiple families living in one home, and the houses were built very close together.
Child labor was a great problem in the Industrial Revolution. Factory owners usually hired women and children rather than men. They said that men expected higher wages, and they suspected that they were more likely to rebel against the company. Women and children were forced to work from six in the morning to seven at night, and this was when they were not so busy. They were forced to arrive on time and they couldn’t fall behind with their work because if they did they were whipped and punished.

I established important goals to remain on this path for success. It made me the person I am today.
